B+E licence rules

I am thinking of swapping my current tow car (a focus estate) for a Ford Transit custom.  Long story, but we have a swift basecamp and end up taking two cars everywhere.  If we had a van it would make live easier as everything could go in the van.

I passed my test in 2009, but following the recent changes, I have B+E on my new licence.

The transit has a maximum permissible weight with payload of 3000kg. I the caravan is up-plated MTPLM of 1300kg

So the maximum weight of both would be 4300kg, which is below the GTW of 5240kg.

So, my understanding is I can tow a total of more than 3500kg up to 7500kg between the van and caravan as long as the weight of the caravan or van individually is no more than 3500kg, or the MAM of the car or MTPLM caravan (whichever is the lower).

Is that understanding correct?

The Uk government website explains it more clearly than that.

Your licence allows you to tow a trailer of 3500 kg.but your Ford Transit custom has a lower towing limit than that and specified by the manufacturer - refer to the manufacturers details for the towing limit for the particular model of Transit you have - they vary.

As Opi550v passed his test before 19 January 2013 he can in fact tow a trailer of any size, however it is unlikely than many vehicles with a MAM of 3500kg will have a towing capacity as high.
