Bus from Strathclyde Country Park site to Glasgow
Hello All - we are thinking about staying for a few days on the Club site at Strathclyde Country Park and visiting Glasgow.
What are bus services like to and from the site into the city?

I am also interested in this as we will be visiting soon and have been doing a bit of research on Google maps. I have found a bus stop for the 255, which goes into the centre just over a mile walk from the site. It does involve crossing the large motorway roundabout, however the aerial photos seem to show a safe pedestrian / cycle route using bridges and underpasses.

With those comments in mind it might be worth looking at Red Deer Village holiday park as an alternative - five miles out of town and a ten minute walk from campsite to Stepps station and trains direct to city.

I have always discounted Strathclyde Country Park as a site to visit Glasgow because what seems the terrible public transport connections. Whilst I appreciate Steve's research, walking well over a mile (for some of us) to get to the bus stop is out of the question especially given the route alongside very busy roads. Does the Club have any arrangements similar to the Edinburgh site with a minibus into the centre? The alternative would be to take a taxi to a nearby railway station and get the train in but I don't know how reliable local taxis are? We did think about using the train from Ayr earlier in the year but didn't. I have also consider the site mentioned by ET but wasn't sure about the immediate surrounding area of the site. I have almost reconciled myself that if I want to visit Glasgow it will be by train direct from MK and a night or two in a Premier Inn!!!
I find it very strange that the Club builds a site near a major City but doesn't give the same thought as to how members are going to visit said City?

Totally agree.
I suppose there might be details re taxis / buses etc in the information room, but a bit late then as you are onsite. The site leaflet on the web page provides no details whatsoever, just a statement about things to visit in the city. Whilst I am happy to do my own research a little bit of basic information would be nice.

We use Strathclyde Park on a regular basis as it’s close to home although we have never tried to use public transport as we always have the car with us. Steve is right there is a bridge and underpass right outside the site that navigates the motorway. There used to be a mini bus service that operated from the site but I don’t think this is active anymore. There is a train station in Bothwell with services in to Glasgow but a taxi would be require to get you to the station. If you have a car then it’s only a 15 minute drive into Glasgow and there are plenty of parking available in the city

Thanks for that information, just proves how useful this forum can be. Usually large cities are OK for taxis but we have been let down in other places. Interesting they did have a mini bus service from the Strathclyde site, perhaps disappeared because of COVID? I think sometimes the Club is still in caravan mode and as yet not fully embracing the slightly different needs of motorhomers. Having said that I am sure many caravanners would prefer to hop on a local to site transport mode to get into the City rather than taking a car into an unfamiliar place especially the size of Glasgow!

There used to be a mini bus from the site into Glasgow, I'm sure I've seen it a few times...? ( But never used it).. Does it not still run..? Might be worth a call to the warden...?
Edit...ah, sorry just seen Francis's comment. Possibly not then..............

We stayed here a couple of years ago and there was details of a local taxi firm in the Information Room. We rang them, they arrived on time and took us to the railway station. On way back we rang from train and they met us and took us back to site. Both journeys at reasonable price. Would recommend them..

Still preferred to use public transport and go direct from the site. I think the only place where we drove to the station was the Wirral country park, where it was quite a walk to the bus stop. That apart many stations have limited if any space once the commuters have left their cars for the day.

we use Strathclyde CC regularly as our daughter lives in Glasgow. Our main criticism is traffic noise as the site is right next to M74. There's also a road running through the country park which is often used by boy-racers doing wheelies all through the night so best find a pitch away from these two roads. We've never used buses there but the local taxi companies all know the site well and are very reasonable. As for parking, we take the Metro from Shields Road station. 15 minutes up the M74 from the site, it has a huge car park and you can park all day for £2.40 including a return ticket, great value. Love the city!

There is a train station in Bothwell with services in to Glasgow.
Unfortunately the last station in Bothwell closed in mid-1960s. Nearby stations still open are in Bellshill, Hamilton and Uddingston, each with different services and all a good way away from the site. The 255 bus services seems to have a variable timetable where only an occasional one goes through to Glasgow though those that don't will get one to the railway stations in Hamilton or Uddingston.

When we stayed, the wardens recommended a local taxi company which got us to the station in 10 minutes. We phoned them again when we were ready to set off back, and were met by the platform at Bothwell station. You could also go from Hamilton station but more expensive taxi fare. Forget the name of the company, but very reliable and an easy journey.

Well we used the 255 to visit Glasgow and it was a fairly easy journey as long as your OK walking to the stop. That’s closer to 2.5km, as the Google distance doesn’t allow for all the loops to gain altitude on the cycle path over the motorway. It’s also fairly steeply uphill for the last 800 metres, despite Google saying mainly flat. The bus takes about 50 minutes and using the credit card to swipe on and off cost £5.50 each. The bus delivers you right to the centre at the Buchanan street bus station. We also used the subway for one journey which cost £1.75 each. Although cheaper options are available if you want to make multiple trips.
Another time we would certainly give the taxi / train option a go. This visit it wasn’t an option due to a rail strike.

Thanks for the good and useful research. Unfortunately a one and a half mile walk and then a further 50 minutes on a bus does not make that site particularly convenient, especially for those of us who are starting to be limited by mobility issues. The taxi seems to be the better option and I assume the train journey takes less time. It seems as though the Centre of Glasgow is too far away for the site to have the same arrangement as the Edinburgh site with the mini bus?

We stayed this summer, but can't comment on public transport. Didn't have a problem driving into Glasgow. (We parked at Glasgow Green, near the People's Palace.) We also drove up to Falkirk to see the Kelpies and the Falkirk Wheel. The site itself is absolutely fine, although being close to a major road network, we did find in on the noisy side....
