Drone on and on and on!!

They can certainly stop people launching them from sites but can do nothing, providing the law is complied with, about a member of the public launching one from outside the site and overflying it.

I pondered acquiring one to supplement and add another dimension to my pictorial record of trips. Preliminary investigation revealed that there were a number of administrative hoops to jump through, so I scrubbed the idea. Whilst some of them are quite pricey, there are sufficient budget models for every 'jack the lad', who will doubtless have a cavalier approach to the legal requirements, to buy one. Another technical intrusion into modern life that we will have to live with along with portable 500W speakers.

As I stated earlier, to get a reasonable photograph of a caravan site you must be at a distance and high up, not directly over it. So, anyone can launch a drone from the surrounding area and legally take pictures. The issue is, can you launch a drone from a caravan site and then land. If the rules say not then all we do is walk to the entrance and launch from a public road. Easy!

I've just noticed this on a Facebook Group page.
I'm neither for nor against drones. This just popped up.

It doesn’t work unless you're a group member, Goldie. Care to tell us what it says?

Particularly so if you are fond of prison food🙄👍🏻

I quite like some well produced drone footage and many YouTubers often add this to their Vlogs. Most of it is nothing to do with campsites but general views. Perhaps if the club made their own and allowed it to be shared that might solve the issue?

Wrong, I had a helicopter in the meadow at the bottom of my garden a few months ago with a big camera attached to it whilst doing numerous 370dg turns. A villager complained to the ERYCC only to be told unless it was obviously stalking you or attempting to focus on a single property very closely they are not breaking any laws. I’ve heard folk shouting at others who were using a mobile phone to video. . .Not illegal🤷🏻♂️

This link shows that there could be legality issues from using drones with cameras. Taking pictures and videos can fall under the GDPR regulations and breaches of these can certainly lead to prosecutions. It may be unlikely, but it is possible. Other web sites I found consistently refer to drone operators being responsible for ensuring that they do not contravene people's right to privacy; however, none of them give examples of where such privacy may be compromised.
Many web sites I have found suggest that permission should be sought before taking photos or video. That seems to me to be common sense and common courtesy even if it is not a legal requirement.
Those who think it is OK to just do it anyway are not very nice people as far as I am concerned.

It could well have been Northern Powergrid doing a survey of overhead power lines which they do about once a year - checking for trees / vegetation likely to impact on the lines. We have lines going over the field at the back of our garden and, one year, the helicopter was so low, I thought it was going to land in the pond! We usually do get notification though - usually by email - if you're signed up for those.

My drone is under 250gm and I can legally fly over residential and industrial areas keeping a linear distance from people of 50m. I am not allowed to fly over crowds.
My drone uses 26 satellites, more than the satntav in my car. Has built in maps to show me where the drone is should I accidentally lose sight so I can fly back to where I am. The drone will also automatically return to home and land if it thinks the battery is getting too low or if it loses the signal from my controller. The software in my controller informs me if I am in a restricted area such as an airfield or military establishment, so flying illegally is prevented. I also have an RTH button on my controller which I can press which will also tell the drone to come home and land within a couple of feet from launch.
I also have a professional camera which I use in towns and cities which has an equivalent 800mm zoom lens. I take pictures of people and places without their permission as we all do, especially on holiday and get right up close. Something you cannot do with a drone. So the people complaining of losing their privacy are probably as guilty as anyone for doing the same thing and worse.

TK, I’ve watched Drone pilots on YouTube unable to fly due to restrictions something re military areas. I think it was the DJI mini 2, full 4K. Superb bits of kit in the right hands. I believe things changed when the idiot few stopped flight traffic @ airports☹️
