Hi 🙂.

Myself and my husband are thinking about putting our motorhome out for renting. But our insurance does not cover anyone except my husband and we are not allowed to rent it (even if the separate insurance will be taken for days when motorhome will be rented out).

We have asked for insurance cost to cover hiring, and the ££ are sky high. Does anyone have any recommendation about which insurance shall we take?

Many thanks

Mateja

Yep, the sky high one if you want to have any cover at all. If you do it on an ordinary policy any claim will likely be rejected as you will be hiring it out for reward. You could lose the lot.

Also, bear in mind that you will need various tests and certifications if hiring out the van. Gas and electric for starters. To the best of my belief this is a legal requirement and needs approved testing by qualified contractors, not just a tick sheet from a dealer. Without meeting those legal requirements, you could be liable to prosecution.

Just another thought, if a finance company has an interest in your MH, you need to clear the hiring situation with them.

I think there are many pitfalls which bear further investigation.

It’s not just about the MH either. If you hire it out, you will need to consider rescue and recovery as well, as no sane customer is likely to want to hire it without it being included. I know I wouldn’t.

We had a family member ask if they could hire ours this coming Summer. Apart from the fact that ours is in use all the time, as we use it each week for safe days out for my still shielding OH, I then pointed out that they would need to pay for their own insurance, rescue and recovery, and any damages that might need putting right. They hadn’t really thought it through to be honest, and I sent them an amicable message explaining things. Ours is a huge part of our life, and is our much used second vehicle which we simply don’t want to jeopardise. One of the couple drives like an idiot to be honest as well, has required more vehicle maintenance than rest of family put together😲

I don’t blame you for saying no, TDA, but even if you’d agreed I think there’s a huge difference in the eyes of the law between lending it to a relative and hiring it out to the general public for financial gain.

You're quite right about the need for breakdown cover too.

Mandy, I’ve linked below to an Andrew Ditton video. By no means is it intended to be a recommendation or promotion of the company concerned but it is a useful source of information. I’m sure you’ll find others if you dig around online.

Personally, I think Dougal is more my sort of thing than letting out my MH😀

Have a look at Comfort Insurance, their policies are with Aviva & they have an option for hiring out to 'Friends & Family' but I'm sure that this is not an absolute restriction.....

It does not affect your insurance.

I stand to be corrected though!

    Hope this helps!

The PVC that we now have at one time was a real vehicle and the papers that came with it included the time it was a rental vehicle ,the costs were very high at that time for servicing to hire standards compared to later servicing costs,, ,as it had to be, it seems a far more comprehensive service and checks  for the insurance
