Whither Dither

Go to pastures new WTG, or at least those you haven’t been to in the last 20 years or so😁 Hope things go well for you over the Channel👍

The unavoidable stops on us going overseas still fill a hand at the moment, but at some point, our time will come. Last thing we need is to be a very long way from home and something drag us back, had a deal of this over last ten years or so, beyond our control, so we happily potter around UK at the moment. I might research Italy and possibility of Sicily for a very long tour away when it is feasible. Meantime, have fun planning👍

How planned are you? Do you wander impulsively? Do you find it hard to choose?
WTG, reading your opening post I could have been reading about us I thought there was nobody else out there who was as indecisive and dithery as OH and I.
We're planning on going acrosss in September, also via the Tunnel (Tesco vouchers). No idea where to go yet, but hey, it's a long way off yet. Trouble is, it doesn't get any more definite the nearer we get. Pre-Covid we used to go twice a year, May/June and Sept/Oct. We'd usually decided which direction to head once off the train in France, but many is the time that we've turned in a different direction, either because we'd not been there before, or somewhere we wanted to re-visit after all.
On the one hand, going back to somewhere you've been before and liked is nice, you're fairly familiar with site/area and things to visit and do. But then, on the other hand, wouldn't it be nice to go to pastures new, are we missing out by not going to somewhere different?
I wish you luck in deciding and look forward to reading where you ended up in due course, it might give us some ideas for Sepember!

Reading some of the posts it could be me writing them. We are off in 18 days and really have no firm idea where we will end up, probably Italy but who knows. We will meander in a SE direction and see what happens; if weather poor quickly over the Alps; if good may explore S Germany and the Salskamergut area of Austria. Saw today that Italy has dropped the need for a PLF so one less bit of paper to sort out (source: UK Govt travel to Italy web site). Don't think we will be heading to Spain/Portugal but will go the other side of the Alps for the early summer weather. We have 6 weeks away so plenty of time to go hither and dither. May end up in Croatia. Car serviced and new MOT (it's first ), caravan all prepared just need to pack. paper work ready, 4th jab received, passports meet the 10 year rule, have a few euros and Swiss francs should we go there. Happy days

In France now, just a few days in southern Brittany to get into the swing of it and then, wherever. No plans except visit some friends who live in the Limousin. It’s the only way to do it. I have to say it did feel good driving on the Amorique last night after 3 years confinement in the UK. We celebrated with French wine and frites! Can’t be doing with all those crowds and horrendous prices we’ve come to know as ‘staycation’. Croatia would be a good ultimate destination allowing for a varied and interesting route.

Another one here who dithers, for 10 years I've talked about going back to Italy but we never seem to get there.
All the years we lived in Germany we avoided France and would drive through as quick as we could to get to Spain. I have to ask myself WHY.
Everytime we go we find new places to visit but always pop in a few places that we've been to before and feel happy to be back.
Next week we should be going to Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, we decided last year that if it was OK to travel we were going to just do it.
But we are not, our friends have not been abroad before with their MH, so we are going to escort them around some of France.
Our usual approach is to follow the weather, not sure if that approach will work with our friends, we'll see.
WTG, wherever you go have a great time.

It’s a nice problem to have and we will be faced with the same dilemma in three weeks time, however, we have decided to return to the Cèze as we are familiar with the area and don’t want to be too adventurous first time back! I am hoping to do a different return route for a change though (see separate post).
Interesting comments on the insurance. Having decided to go away for five weeks we discovered that there was a massive price increase over 35 days so changed our Eurotunnel return booking to come back on day 35. Barclays very reasonable for travel with inclusive breakdown and no extras up to 79 years old.

Hitchglitch I have my medical travel Insurance through Lloyds (annual world wide multi trip) and they have reduced their time for individual trips, in my case effective from August. So our 6 week trip in a couple of weeks is not affected but I will have to take this into account later and do my sums to see if I can get better value elsewhere

Much the same a you WTG but we have decided to tour in UK for another year but I will be chompping at the bit at the end of the year to get over there in 2023. Lijke you insurance is a limiting factor unless I can buy extra time (exopensive?) I may well settle for two trips of a about a month each, one back to old haunts and another to pastures new. I hope nothing puts a stop to these ideas.

WTG, Well all this talk of 'ditherers' is quite interesting. I used to be indecisive but now I am sure, OK, quite sure, that I am not one!
As for planning, have to say that we have never done the 'turn right off ferry' approach as it seems, to us, that to get the best out of your time there needs to be some planning.
This for us has usually meant the main destination is known and we get there ASAP with any meandering done on the way back.
I say usually as this year, we cross in June, we will be taking a new approach and limiting the time spent driving each day so this has meant more planning and identifying sites suitable for a stop over. I even have an idea of suitable fuel stops, identified with Google maps and Streetview, having had issues with poor access & egress in the past!
On the old V new decision,we are doing a bit of both this year. Germany was in the frame as it fitted with visiting friends in Holland, on the outward leg, but thats out now due to their plans and the Bavarian School holidays impact on sites around Garda so, plan 27B is now in place and we are doing a circular, out via Roscoff back via Harwich, tour, visiting Annecy, Lago Trasimeno, both new, and then our fave site on Garda before heading back via Holland to visit our friends.
Our trip will be a few days less than you and we are, as many here, looking forward to it immensely-we did have great holidays here the last two years but driving onto the Pont Aven in June will remind us never to take things for granted and to make the most of life when, and while, we can.
Have a great trip!

I'm a planner, usually with stopovers marked out. Finally heading for a much postponed trip to Annecy in a couple of weeks although, given the lack of differential in fuel price, a more direct route rather than via Luxembourg. Coming back is a bit fuzzier and will "see how it goes".
Planning is always fun even if you change it all.

WTG the Lot valley biased as I live there and not far from Averyon gorges also the Cantal is good as we did that last year but gites only but a lot of places to see and do, much wamer at home around 23/24C although storms are forecast. A bit cooler and damper here now in Cornwall but enjoying our break. Good luck which direction you go.
