Saving a pitch as you are booking in

Not really, I am prepared to give a reason why I consider it acceptable, rather than just saying it’s wrong. We are not gaining an advantage. If OH walks round while I am filling, she is in the position we would be in if driving. Indeed as she can be passed by those checking in behind, she could be at a slight disadvantage.

Hi you are nearly right they are much the same except the end ones near the car park fortunately there were other pitches than these available it was just the cheek of it that annoyed me.

Out of interest, Steve, at what point do you tell the warden that you're having pitch number x? Before your OH stands on it or after youve finished at the MHSP? If the former, then that's fine and the pitch is officially yours but if it's after you've pitched, you have no more claim to it prior to that point than anyone else looking for a pitch. That's the way I see it. 🤷♂️

Sometimes, arriving at a site we know I've asked if X pitch is available and will choose it on the basis that it will be ok and there are no others in front looking at pitches. We've also done what Steve does and put our motorhome sign on a pitch whilst filling up (not often but we've done it.) There are so many permutations. If someone wants to save a pitch by standing on it, same as some do in car parking spaces it's not a big deal, these things happen. I think there is a Darwin explanation somewhere...

That's not what I asked but.....hey-ho🤷♂️

We never ever arrive on site much before 15:00 so no rushing about for us but a couple of occasions when we have been booking in we have been informed there were 2 or 3 serviced pitches available so to save our and the wardens time we have selected a pitch and been handed the gate pass etc

Yes, doesn’t it just. All that angst must be exhausting.

We had this last year at the Wirral site. Checked in discussed with warden where would be a good area. Picked a pitch and headed to it, there was a lady standing on the pitch. I asked had she checked in with the warden and got the fob.
Checked in yes fob no. Her husband was emptying the waste tank and filling with fresh water (MH) so she was saving the pitch for him.
I pointed out that as she had not been back to the warden to inform them what pitch they were on it was open for first come basis. She wasn't having any of it and refused to move.
We decided it wasn't worth the hassle so selected another pitch. As it turned out she did us a huge favour.
The original pitch backed onto the road which is subject to traffic going past all day and well into the early hours and with little sun.
We had a lovely grass pitch with a nice view of the estuary 😊 no traffic noise and we were in sunshine all day. 😊

I have never been on a C&CC site where I have been allocated a specific pitch. When you book you have already decided the sort of pitch you want and from my experience the site staff tend to ask if you have any particular requirements, like near a service point or the toilets, would you prefer an open aspect or shaded. From that information they point out the choice of pitches available to you. I have even been on one C&CC site where I was told to go and find my own pitch!
Going back to the original post I wonder if the ability to be able to book a surface type with the CMC under the new booking system will stop this rush to secure a pitch? Those that have witnessed this rush to secure a pitch are they always hardstanding?

I think once you have booked in I see no issue with what you do. It hardly makes sense to drive further around the site just to set the wheels of your motorhome on the pitch to claim it. Surely there is a difference between someone who has not yet booked in and not paid wandering into the site to reserve a pitch?

Over the 6 years we've been with the CCC we have had all 3 different types of offers.
Some we are given a choice within our pitch type at some no choice at all as that was the only one available within our vehicle size. Only twice have we been told to just go and pick a pitch and tell them later on.
During Covid it was quite usual to be allocated a pitch, very awkward to change it on some sites.

But it doesn’t have to be a drive around.
The point I was trying to establish was this:
Scenario 1 - your OH sees a good pitch so walks back to the office and is officially designated that pitch and returns to it to wait for you to finish at the MHSP. I see no issue with that at all.
Scenario 2 - your OH sees a good pitch and stands on it waiting for you to finish at the MHSP. When you arrive and have driven onto the pitch, one of you walks to the office and makes the selection official. The difference here is that, during the time your OH is blocking the pitch while waiting for you, she has not been allocated said pitch and is attempting to stop others taking it. That I consider to be rather cheeky to put it mildly.

Generally the C&CC system works well, someone accompanies arrivals en route to the type of pitch chosen and there's usually a choice which they'll help you with and they also relay the pitch you've taken to other site managers. Things are kept up to date, a system that works well and fairly.
Personally I find arriving at a C&CC site a much calmer event and the arrival time is adhered to by all. You won't find anyone standing on a pitch trying to "bag" it first!
I don't think the proposed new CAMC system will improve the rush to pitches on busy sites, it will always be grab and go with delays in information going back to reception. Some arrivals are met at the gate which happens on a handful of sites and this is a better solution than the general free for all. CAMC could improve the arrival experience if they read threads like this one.

I agree, Brue. I think the C&CC method benefits everyone.
I suspect though that it needs more staff, especially on busy sites like Moffat, in order to keep the office manned while others are escorting arrivals to pitches. Still, if C&CC can do it and maintain lower membership fees, give age related discount and have shorter peak seasons, surely CAMC is also capable🤔.

So what is the difference to just putting a motorhom maker on the pitch indicating it is occupied? Both are perfectly acceptable if you have paid and already entered the site with you vehicle.

Put it another way, what is the difference between bagging a pitch with a marker or a chair? Nothing at all - they are both intended to prevent others from having that pitch which is not on if the person has not approached the office and been granted use of that pitch. Compare the two scenarios and you should better understand the difference, PD.

You have to put a marker, or as in PD’s case a car. You can hardly go back to the site office to claim the fob for an empty pitch. I fail to see why you think it cheeky. We are checked onto the site, not pushing in front of anyone else to claim a pitch, all those in front of us in the queue have had the chance to select said pitch as they have driven past it. Plus it minimises driving around the site unnecessarily, which has got to be a good thing.

That’s in your opinion, PD, not fact. My opinion differs.

I already said it isn’t necessary to drive and you still haven’t said which scenario applies.
OK, let me ask it another way as I’m not getting through here. Does your OH put a marker on the pitch then head for the office to be allocated that pitch? Alternatively, does she physically block the pitch and make no effort to return to the office and thus prevents others from choosing that pitch which is not legitimately hers/yours?
On the other hand, I don’t really care and I’m a bit sick of some folks selfish ways as they will never see the unfairness of their acts.

I agree with Tinwheeler! IMHO you only have claim to a pitch when you have put your MH or caravan onto the pitch. On a few occasions I've not informed the site office straight away as I've forgot or have been otherwise distracted. Getting your other half to walk to an empty pitch to reserve it is taking the proverbial! Which takes us back to clatinetman's original post.

For couples with two phones .The best walker strides out across the site and chooses a pitch, stays there and phones partner who is still at the office to say where he/she is - and for him or her to let the warden know the pitch number. That partner then drives to the pitch already logged with the warden .
Isn’t that sensible? And on a big site it also saves the long walk back.

Seems to me that a lot of people’s blood pressure must be raised when going to camp sites ,with all of this “ rule breaking “ . Me ,I just book in and find whatever pitch is vacant ,go back to the office and get on with my holiday ,I don’t care what other people are doing
