Saving a pitch as you are booking in

That’s where site specific nature comes into play. Cherry Hinton is essentially a linear site with only one entrance and same exit with a single carriageway once through the barrier, no chance of driving round to find a pitch. The system there is still first come first served. They do a good job to help alleviate such conflict, it works there, it has to.

I arrive on site, many times the wardens hands over a site leaflet and highlights which pitches of my type which is usually - actually always a SP and there aren't that many most times, are free. As it's is a site I've been to many times I'll look and see if one of the vacant pitches is where we want to be. I'll ask if I can have that one and I've always been given the fob straight away. Maybe it is site/warden specific, pitch type specfic, and maybe the wardens have a good idea of what is happening in terms of arrivals and those looking for those type of pitches or my arrival time fits? who knows but it has happened. I've also had this happen with someone in front of me when booking in (pre covid days) and I've not thought it unfair to me at all.
Personally I can't see how that circumvents the fair system if the wardens allow it. Who am I not being being fair to? Actually you could say as I know the site I have an advantage and would go straight to my chosen area before anyone else anyway, is that fair?
If it isn't fair then take it up with the wardens allowing it? If they give me 'permission' then I'll take it and assume it is OK, if not then I'll take that too.

I think that's very likely the key, Corners. As there aren't usually many SPs it narrows the field and the wardens would know if someone else was cruising looking to select a SP.

Totally agree. When we visit Lower Wensleydale we prefer the upper level that can be accessed without driving right round. On our last visit it was fairly full, the MH in front of us set off round the circuit and we took the direct route. They arrived slightly later, unfortunately we had taken the last pitch.
Another scenario. On several occasions my OH wanders off with our MH using this pitch sign whilst I fill with water. Anyone see her putting it on a pitch might think we had jumped the gun, however, we have already paid and are through the barrier. It seems a much more sensible approach than driving round, finding a pitch, then driving round again to fill with water.

Thanks Corners, I understand the site specific bit but what would some do given your scenario if they found a van pitching on the very pitch they had been given the fob for. Now you seem like a reasonable person and I guess you would simply hand them that fob. My concern though is such occurrences do nothing at all to help eliminate possible issues or confrontation, are against common expectations of long existing practices and become conversational examples of both members and wardens not following the ‘rules’. To say it is alright because some allow it is not really that helpful and adds more fuel to the fire in my opinion.

I can't see any difference between this & what the OP posted ..... 🤷♂️

Incorrect-I’ve seen it done before using various bits of kit placed over up to 3 separate adjoining pitches on private sites around the country🤷🏻♂️. I’m afraid selfish folk don’t just use C&MC sites.

+1 surely it’s the same action-pre taking a pitch before actually being there. I’m never that desperate to be pitch specific. A pitch is a parking spot I use to sleep on, the aspect means nothing🤔

Clarinetman, You may find that the lady guarding the pitch you wanted has already phoned her husband who is still booking in at reception and that he has notified the warden which pitch they will be on. So that’s all done and dusted, the warden has logged the pitch number, and it saves one of them walking back to the office later. I reckon they were pretty smart .

Obviously I’m of a different era to some. What has happened to the etiquette, the friendly fellow member attitude, the we are all in this together of yesteryear. That first come to pitch practice I’ve enjoyed and understood in years gone by. All gone?
Chair, table, car person. All strategies to beat others to a vacant pitch unoccupied by either caravan or motorhome.
Please someone tell me what is the correct procedure today, not a free for all?

Whilst I agree that a pitch is a pitch is a pitch, there is an advantage with a motorhome when dealing with a "pitch squatter". One is able to drive on to the pitch, avoiding the squatter. Advise them that you have three days worth of water etc and can resist a siege. I wonder what the response would be?
I like being escorted to a pitch. Saves me the trouble of finding it.

Mmm, and the one I experienced was a lad emerging from a unit 3 or 4 back in the queue carrying a EHU lead which he then ran with and deposited on the favoured pitch way in advance of booking in. Friendly fellow member indeed😣

It’s just conflict waiting to happen and encouraged by some it would seem. What if the person in the office had noticed that very pitch but had done the right thing by waiting their turn in that age old accustomed way. Then that electric cable appears on it from three/four units back in the queue. Not good at all, selfish.

Similar at Chatsworth on our last visit. Member of staff at the head of the queue outside reception. Only the unit at the front of the queue allowed to book in and people being asked to remain in their car/motorhome until booked in. Chatsworth like Cherry Hinton is a fairly compact site so perhaps they experience more issues than other more spacious sites? On a couple of sites I have been allowed to go through the barrier to find a pitch and told to come back to book in so in effect am I jumping the queue?

That was my point. Once you have checked in and paid, it is perfectly reasonable to wander round and select a pitch. If it’s wasn’t busy and there was somewhere to stop out the way, we preferred to do that when we had a caravan. There is nothing I have seen that says you must drive round to select your pitch. What isn’t acceptable is folk wandering onto site to grab a pitch whilst the unit is still in the queue waiting to be checked in. My point was seeing someone on a pitch does not mean they have jumped the queue.
On another occasion at Malvern, as it’s a fairly large site we drove to find a pitch and got one of the last hardstandings. Parked on the pitch, unloaded a chair and EHU cable and as it was a nice day OH sat on the pitch whilst I filled with water. She had to send three vans packing who tried to pinch it. Folk are just to ready to jump to the conclusion that someone is trying to pull a fast one.

Now here’s a scenario for consideration. Car turns up to book in, tells staff that partner is following in camper van. Can they put the car on their favourite pitch and claim occupancy rights? Does distance/time behind determine the outcome. This I did witness. It transpired the van wouldn’t arrive until after driver finished work.
I know this ‘cos I was in reception booking in at the time. The car and driver was directed to the car park to await the arrival of van. Was that fair?if time/distance behind is important, how long, how far?

I’m afraid those rose tinted glasses of yours need a new prescription Micky boy-it’s older folk that I’ve seen creating the issues. Selfishness is ageless🤷🏻♂️. ‘First come first served’ is the mantra & I’m thinking it’s first to drive up gets the spot not first to appear with various pieces of furniture gets all the pitches they can put said furniture on.

OK so it more sensible for me to drive round, park on it, unload a sign and EHU cable and then drive round again to fill with water. Rather than OH walking from the service point round the site and selecting a pitch. (See problem above) So be it we will just continue being wrong.

That’s your call not mine SL,I know what’s fair & what’s cheeky is all. Btw there’s no need to get yourself het up-it’s an opinion not a an attack or a fine🤷🏻♂️
PS-ED posted to you first I just agreed with him just like DD did👍🏻0 -
You are so right in all respects, Rocky, it is the older should know better, privileged by what they consider years that probable create these issues. I’ll change those lenses. Although from what I see several new to the staycation don’t understand the ways. Some are clueless in many respects of caravaning.

They’re ways from days of yore Mickey I never copied my parents ways as I was from a different mindset like my children & Grandchildren are from me. It ain’t wrong my friend just different👍🏻

Believe me Rocky, not often but my kids and grandkids are sometimes wrong. Just need a bit of helpful advice to the the error of their ways, and thank me later! 😉History doesn’t have to repeat itself and all that, sometimes we can learn from it and those who lived through it!👍
When I was an apprentice I learn so much from my mentor, more than just a trade, much for life.
