Book on line for your tunnel crossing when you have a date in mind, perhaps a few days in advance, or book a flexible ticket which can be changed on line, but you may have to be flexible with time of crossing.

Just turning up for a single tunnel crossing without booking in advance can be very expensive. Tried it once when our ferry was badly delayed and we had to get back. It was quicker to drive up the coast to the tunnel instead of waiting but cost us dear.

To play by the new rules since Brexit you should have a return crossing booked before leaving the UK. The rules also say you have to have sufficient funds in place to cover your stay.
Also most holiday insurance states that a return crossing has to be booked prior to departing the UK.
We have done so for quite a few years as failure to do could invalidate your insurance if you have a problem while abroad and need to make a claim. We book a flexi ticket that way we comply with the rules but can change the dates if we decide to stay longer or come home earlier.

Another Brexit myth? Sorry, but the French government website is clear. You are not required to have a return ticket when you go to France, provided “you have the means to acquire one at the envisaged return date”

Than you Michael. I checked that too with another insurer.
So how is it that a post in this thread giving two pieces of completely inaccurate information got four Likes very quickly?

Thank you WTG
We are insured by Nationwide and it is certainly in the Policy that a return crossing must be booked prior to departure.
As to the other one Re after Brexit, can't remember where I read it (could have been Gov.UK) but it clearly stated that a return ticket should be purchased, also proof of enough funds could be checked by border control on entry to Europe.
I'm not in the habit of making these things up, just repeating what I have read. Of course everyone should check for themselves.

From the Uk Gov website
Border control: you may have to show your return ticket and money
At border control, you may need to:show a return or onward ticket
show you have enough money for your stay
use separate lanes from EU, EEA and Swiss citizens when queueing
Your passport will be stamped.0 -
You will need to know the details of your return to fill in the Passenger Locator Form - if it remains in use. But as you can complete it from 19 days before return to just before you embark this is not a problem; you just need your crossing details. Lucky us completed one in a beach bar in St Kitts 4 weeks ago before we returned from a winter sun holiday

On the same(ish) topic, we are travelling to Santander shortly and intend coming back via Cherbourg.
We can find information re Covid for entry into Spain from the UK and entry into France from the UK but cannot find information about entry into France from Spain as a UK national.
Does anyone know if there are problems doing this?

Everyone who has been that way in recent months has reported that the border between Spain and France is unmanned, unguarded and unchecked - they all say you just drive freely across.
