Sites between Santander and French border

I would appreciate advice, please, of any decent site c.2 hours out of Santander heading towards the west end of the French border. We've done the journey many times but have struggled to find a suitable clean, quiet site for an overnight/two night stay.

Historically, we've found the best solution to be, having disembarked the ferry in the afternoon, to head a few miles west of Santander, where there are good sites, and set off for France early next morning but I'd love to find a better way.

All suggestions will be gratefully received. thank you.

There is an excellent site at Zarautz, which is about 2 hours from Santander and about 40 miles from the French border near San Sebastian. It is in the ACSI book.

If you're only staying for 1 or 2 nights, have you thought about staying on an aire ?

There seems to be plenty of choice on the route between Santander and the French border.

Here's a map showing some that came up on Google.

I just thought that it seems a pity to go all the way to Cantabria  and leave immediately, but no doubt there’s a reason .

Landyrover - thanks for your helpful reply. I suspect the site you are recommending is Zumaia which has excellent reviews on Pitchup. When I checked its website yesterday it said it wasn't open till 15/6 which was too late for us however, I've just revisited the website and it now says its open from 2/4 which is perfect so thanks again for your superbly timed recommendation!

Thanks JimE for your reply which I do appreciate. Rightly or wrongly, we're not keen on the idea of aires despite never having used one! Bit like the old Guinness adage 'don't like it, never tried it' laughing. In this instance I think Landyrover has come up with the ideal site for us so perpetuating our ignorance of the aires' merits!
