Touring Portugal
Hi everyone
We have toured Europe extensively over many years but never been in to Portugal. Would particularly appreciate any “must visit” areas and site recommendations. Hoping to plan a 4 week tour for some time in May / June this year. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Liz & Tony

The Atlantic coast from Viana do Castelo southwards is stunning, the fortified towns on the south bank of the Rio Minho facing Spain are worth a visit, the market towns of vino verde country around Ponte de Lima are full of history and local colour. The Douro valley and Porto are almost a destination in themselves.
With a careful bit of route planning, many of these locations can be taken in en route and you will get a much better idea of the true character of Portugal, rather than just the tourist hotspots of the Algarve (nice as they are).

A few personal recommendations:
Northern Portugal, very different from the holiday hot spots in the south. Huge sandy beaches with Atlantic surf and quiet out of season. We stayed here: Parque de Campismo do Paço, Rua do Paço, 4910-024 Vila Praia de Âncora
Definately include a trip to Porto. Sunday is a great time to visit the riverside area under the Dom Luis Bridge when the locals are all out enjoying themselves. We stayed at a site in a small fishing village just north of Porto and got the metro from the nearby retail park into the city. Parquet de Campismo Sol de Vila Chã, Rua do Sol, 150 Vila Chã, 4485-722 Vila do Conde.
Lisbon is a must see. We stayed at this convenient city site, good security and on the bus route.
Lisboa Camping & Bungalows
Estrada da Circunvalação
1400-061 LisboaFrom Lisbon venture inland to the old town of Elvora (as recommended by AD). We stayed at Parque de Campismo Orbitur Evora. Nice site within walking distance of town. Avoid pitching under a mulberry tree, the squashed berries stain like hell!
No visit would be complete without the Algarve. I’d recommend any good site on the railway that links all the resort towns along the coast. Great for easy day trips. I like Tavira and the close by resort of Cabanas de Tavira, but site maybe not to everyone’s liking.
Next stop… Seville!

Also useful for us, as we are planning a first trip to Portugal. Our caravan is a single axle 8.24m long Adria, and it seems some sites have a limit of either 7m or 8m. Any recommendations for sites without such a length restriction most welcome.
