New Towcar Reviewer
Re January article page 68 introducing James Bachelor as the clubs new towcar reviewer- not with standing his journalistic skill as outlined briefly at the start of the article - but how can anyone review a towcar if you have never towed a caravan in your life??

Perhaps he is the ideal person to review towcars as he comes with no preconceived ideas of what is good or bad. As I understand it he is an experienced motoring journalist who is now branching out into towcars. He has now done a towing course, which I suspect many caravanners don't do? He could turn out to be an inspired choice?

I think starting at a low point with no preconceptions or views does have it's advantages.
I have NO interest in football, so when friends with a favorite team start waffling on, and I happen to have seen, under duress, 5 minutes of a game, I can give a totally unbiased opinion without preference or favour or who where the the most useless and pathetic overpaid gang of bag or wind kickers on the green stuff.

Is he related to Horace Batchelor?

This is a copy of my comments sent to the club regarding the latest tow car tester appointment titled Staying the Course in the January edition of the club magazine which they did not publish.
"I have read with interest the article relating to the appointment of the club's latest tow car reviewer.
I tow a touring caravan regularly and have done so for almost 50 years. During that time I have held a driving licence for every category except track laying vehicles, although now retired in my employment I had numerous qualifications relating to all aspects of vehicles and motorcycles from actual driving daily, testing, of both drivers and vehicles including mechanical and documentation aspects.
For more than 10 years I instructed on Caravan club courses at one of your centres, little did I realise that after dealing with a novice as part of a group who had never towed a caravan on the road that person would be qualified to test and advise members on the suitability of a tow car in real life, really!
Whilst it seems Mr. Batchelor has a wealth of experience driving many different cars I fail to understand the relevance of that in his new appointment, I am afraid it sounds like jobs for the boys to me.
Where was this vacancy advertised?
Perhaps I could suggest that the next vacancy could be filled by Jeremy Clarkson who does have experience of towing caravans all be it very badly as well as giving mis information on the way to deal with snaking which the caravan club felt obliged to issue a statement on, clearly his humour was wasted on the club even though I find him quite amusing.
I am very sorry but as a result of this appointment and article I feel the club has no credibility regarding the suitability of a tow car."
I will not bore you with the follow up correspondence, only to add that the position was never advertised so how can they possibly know that they have engaged the best possible person for the job?

As none of us have seen, or are likely to see, the Job Description we are in no position to really judge what the Club required from this recruitment. It is interesting so many seem to be willing to judge and dam someone before they have actually seen anything to judge the person on. At least he was brave enough to put his head above the parapet to recall his experience of a towing course. Had he not done that we would be non the wiser. I think the way the Club review most things could do with a refresh so perhaps this is the starting point?

it doesn't bode well if you can't even fit your extended mirrors without them falling off .... 🤔
I've just dug the article out & read it. Coincidently, the first time I reversed anything with was a tractor too .... mine was a real one though.

I am neither of the above (thank goodness) but hope I can help by pointing out that this is primarily a discussion forum and input by staff is not frequent. The Contact Us button is available for addressing questions directly to the club and John Todd may well have gone down that route. I guess we'll never know.

Whilst people are welcome to have their opinions, and that is all they are, this is not the place to discuss a staff member of the Club. If people have concerns they should take that up with the Club directly. I am now going to close this thread to further discussion.
