New car needed
Hi all doesn't seem like 3 years since I got first car and van. After some more advice please. So 2.0 ltr diesel Kuga motability car has to change and really struggling to find a replacement. Best so far is the Hyundai Tucson 1.6 T-GDI 150, petrol but i suppose it will do the job. Weight is the thing I am having difficulty with, caravan is 2011 Lunar Clubman SB at 1485kg, now the car says kerb weight between 1425-1575kg but braked towing is 1650kg or with trailer brakes 2000kg. these figures don't seem to match so can any one enlighten me please?
Thanks, jeremy.

Are you miss reading? The picture seems to show 1650kg braked which would be fine for a 1485 MTPLM?

Call the kerb weight 1500 for the sake of simplicity. Your van is 1485, whereas 85% is around 1275. It's not illegal but I'd not want to tow with that set up☹

I would expect Kerb weight will be around 1500 without any payload. Add a couple of passengers a tow bar, a. an awning and other associated gear, the gross weight of the tow vehicle will be well above 1485.

It's the kerb weight that is taken as the guidance for safe towing and, if you adhere to that 85% theory, this is not a good match. If you don't bother about that guidance, then all is fine.
The legal bits not to be exceeded are the gross vehicle weight of 2050, the gross train weight of 3700 and the max towing weight of 1650. Keep within thise weights and it's legal although, to my mind, the rig is far from ideal.

My only concern would be if towing a fully laden van with an empty car, but would that ever happen?
Is the VW Tiguan on the scheme as it might be a bit heavier and is a good every day solo vehicle.

Thanks for the replies.
Tiquan like many others is not available, Kuga is not available in anything other than petrol electric. Seems most if not all diesels are gone. Skoda superb might be an option but upfront costs are now 3 times what they were.

Can you keep the one you have?

Already looked on Google and the Korando gets good reports for towing. Quote: "The new SsangYong Korando has been crowned the best tow car under £24,000 by Auto Express, winning the plaudits of testers with its stability at high speeds and tow capacity of 2,000kg - significantly more than the competition." this was a couple of years ago though, the new model doesn't seem that different.

….but what about the company being in deep mire?
Are you limited to particular models? If not, have a look at the Hyundai Sante Fe / Kia Sorento.

You should be ok with a Kia Sportage depending on which model and equipment installed. We have one and tow a plated weighted 'van of 1500kgs, although it would only carry around 1450kgs at maximum. We have been towing for over 30 years so don't mind being in the low 90% if needed.
We found our Hyundai undercooked and couldn't find a Skoda Superb with enough kerb weight to do what we wanted.
Edit - I say "we" but Mrs WNs towing experience has been limited to towing it from one side of a club barrier to the other.

Previous generation X-Trail have been fine vehicles. A little look on the whatcar website paints a different picture of this latest version.

Problem with above, they are not on the Motability scheme. Had a look at the Toyota RAV4 but only 2WD on the scheme and they are limited to 800kgs, Honda CR-v limited to 750kgs, this is proving to be a problem. Might just get a small run about on the scheme and use the upfront to buy a towing car second hand.

750kg? Are you talking about unbraked towing weight?🤔🤷🏻♂️

One of the neighbours has that Honda and I like the look of it. I checked out the tow limit on it a month or so ago and was equally surprised to see a braked tow limit of 750kg. I'm guessing it's because of the hybrid set up.

Why not consider the Tuscan Hybrid? You get the same engine but with the additional electric power (while it lasts), and the car is heavier, so a better combination?
The max towable is 1650Kg. So with your van you would be looking at a towing ratio of 77%!
For your info, the engine puts out 150Hp and 250Nm torque. With the Hybrid you get a total of 265Hp and 350Nm torque.
Nice car.
