We have a swift basecamp.  It's a small unit, and the awning goes on the back. Awningvand caravan combined are about the same length as a standard caravan  (we don't have the Vango awning)

Would we be able to use our awning on a non awning pitch?

It might vary site to site depending on pitch layout/size. Caravans vary a lot in length so 'standard' is a bit vague. I suggest you establish the total length of your outfit in metres and then seek clarification from the club.

If our contributing warden Jolly Kernow rocks up, he might be able to help.

    Good afternoon

So, my first thoughts are why book a non awning pitch in the first place? Awning pitches are bigger and more plentiful. If you did want a non awning pitch I'd suggest giving the site a call and asking the staff their advice.

When inputting your outfit length put the total length down as van and awning combined. That will assure you of a suitable pitch. Hope this helps

Just a genuine question here.  When you say:

"put the total length down as van and awning combined. That will assure you of a suitable pitch."

    who sees the dimension?

How does this work in terms of a suitable pitch, if people can simply chose whatever pitch they want?

This has always puzzled me, every time I enter my outfit length (or confirm) when booking.

So reading back through the thread, an awning is enclosed and a canopy is open. On a non-awning pitch a motorhome is allowed to put up a canopy as long as the 3m fire regs rule is met. Is a caravan allowed to put up a canopy as long as the 3m fire regs rule is met?

Yes I know somebody will say book an awning pitch, but at times these are not available.

I suspect you could not use a wind out canopy on a caravan on a non-awning pitch for the simple reason a caravan will also have a car on pitch. However, pitches and sites differ.

I don’t take the slightest bit of notice of awning/non awning designation. If it’s available and I want to stay there I’ll happily book whatever is available. I certainly wouldn’t deny myself because it’s got the wrong colour peg! Nobody has taken umbrage (so far).

DD, I wouldn’t worry about it, the more you try and understand these things the more you lose the will to live. If the site has an available pitch of any type just book it and let somebody object if they have a problem with it. I’ve known absurd situations where the availability of pitches meant I needed to make multiple bookings of pitch types in order to stay on the same site for a continuous period. The wardens have insisted I change pitch as per my enforced bookings only to discover that the unit arriving on the vacated awning pitch later that day is a small VW campervan with no awning. 🤔

Some outfits have to be positioned diagonally to actually fit onto the pitch. We had one such next to us at YRP, absolutely huge, protruded into roadway until it was shunted in at an angle across the pitch. Meanwhile, we were on an awning pitch with our little Gertie, like a happy little pea on a drum😂

We had this our last night at Marazion. We had to move from a lovely little non awning pitch, to a much larger awning pitch. The actual full tale is a tad longer, but suffice it to say we just went with it, the debate wasn’t worth it😂

The basecamp has the door on the back - see the attached image.

The total length of caravan and awning is 7 metres, so providing we can fit it on the pitch, I can't see it would present any issues.

I have tried to called the Southport CMC site to confirm whether we can put an awning up or not, but sadly no one has answered the phone.

We'll take it with us and see what they say at check in

I think they look great. If it helps I have seen two just like that on actually the same club site and it looked as though they were same length as a neighbouring long caravan. Are you going to have the door at the back or front of the pitch (just wondering what I would do)

I wonder if there will be so many awnings in general once the new booking system comes out and along with deposits we will be charged extra for them and for each dog?wink

It'll be "charged for each visit to the facilities block" next.   Which can only be welcomed by those who always use their own onboard provision.

I am sure the new booking system could accommodate such chargingsurprised Some of that could become a reality because with the ability of being able to book a pitch surface the logic would follows that different prices could be charged for different pitches? However I think the Club will have enough on their hands in just introducing deposits for now?

The CC/NT thread re the CLs on NT sites had charges listed for dogs (max 2) on the booking page at Stourhead....
