Which ferry route we use depends on where you are going once over the water.  We live in West Sussex about 1 hr from Portsmouth and 3 hrs from Dover.  If going to Italy/Germany we use the Tunnel (using Tesco points), if going to South France we use Portsmouth/Caen and if going to Spain we have used the Portsmouth-Santander crossing. David, I will look at the Voyager Club as it may be worth our while thanks for the tip. I have looked at the Brittany Ferries new ship, looks nice.  However, off on a short Fred Olsen cruise in a couple of weeks. first time 'over there' for 2 years!

Reported locally this afternoon that Pont Aven needed tug assistance in Plymouth Sound today due to high winds.

Looking forward to our next trip but the Bay of Biscay can wait a little longer!!

And today’s return sailing to Santander cancelled with gusts of wind up to 130 kph off the coast of Brittany - and the winter storms yet to come.  I wouldn’t want to go that way either.

    It's a great ferry.

Last year on a trip to Plymouth, we parked the car at Torpoint and crossed as foot passengers, then walked up the bus terminus. Having just missed the bus we decided to make the longish trek uphill to the main road and took the bus to Plymouth.

On our return journey we weren't exactly sure which bus we needed so we asked the driver "does this bus goes towards the ferry", it did so asked him to tell us where to get off. When we approached the area where we had previously got on, he turned left and went downhill towards the terminus and actually onto the ferry! - something we never ever expected..

    You ain’t seen nuffin!

There are 3 ferries all chain operated but when the weather is rough they take the middle one out of service because the conditions can make them sideways swipe each other.

Prior to building the Tamar Bridge in 1961 which links Plymouth to Saltash, the only ways to travel by vehicle between Plymouth and Cornwall were to either use the Torpoint Ferry or to drive via Tavistock.

There was a time when the Ferries would be packed with young Naval recruits travelling between the Torpoint training bases and the delights of Plymouth's night life.

MikeyA, Here’s the little known way to cross the Tamar on your next visit - from Cremyll on the Cornwall side to Stonehouse on the Devon side. Buses and/or parking at both sides.

I once worked with someone who commuted daily on that ferry, Euro.

In my earlier post I overlooked the long defunct Saltash ferry which preceded the Tamar Bridge. It was small and never as popular as the Torpoint ferry.

The Cremyll ferry was a lifeline for the folks of Cawsand & Kingsand in the days when it was a proper community, sadly no longer. The Torpoint Ferry offered great views of Devonport Dockyard. It was a daily means of commute for me and I can still vividly remember the scenes there in 1982 when UK naval forces were being assembled for the Falklands War - never seen anything like it before or since.

And quite appropriate for ferries from Cornwall to England to be here in the overseas section of this forum.

Blimey didn't mean to hijack this post ! But for heads up from a PCB driver, from Plymouth Royal Parade you can catch a service 70 that will take you over the Torpoint ferry and onto one of the most senic coastal roads in the country and into Cornwall's forgotten corner and terminates by the Cremyl ferry and Mount Edgcombe House and country park. Catch the ferry over to Stonehouse and the Royal William Yard from there catch the 34 back to city centre.

Frank, you’re certainly right about the ‘forgotten corner’, but all the better for it!

Does your route take in the Finnygook Inn at Crafthole? If so, highly recommended.

That’s a big statement-‘one of the most scenic coastal roads in the country’ thanks for the heads up FG, it’s a part of the country I’ve not visited👍🏻

PS-if it beats Buttertubs pass it must be a corker.

SB-Yes, it stops a short distance from the Finnygook.

R2B-Yes, it beats Buttertubs-for sea views.

As mentioned, you can take the ferry to Royal William Yard, and on into The Barbican, which would fill a day out and provide lots of food and drink options.

Better stop now as this is drifting more than the Pont Aven last week.

Former sightings of the Pont Aven leaving Plymouth Sound in the early evening for France always produced a bit of travel envy!

Former David, nothing was sailing when we visited just as things started to open up this year.

Know that feeling well every time I pass Millbay Docks and see one of the ferries in.

Should add SB that unfortunately it's not forgotten by second home owners especially Cawsands.

Yes, sadly another ghost community. I know the area well, I learnt to sail there in the early 1980s and remember quite a few encounters with Brittany Ferries whose french captains never got the hang of the ‘power gives way to sail’ convention!

Yeh, you’re right. I had this image of the ships bridge decorated with victory markings from all the near misses they’d had with ‘les mad rosbifs’! 😉

Some of remember the occasion when tourists who had booked with Brittany Ferries to go to Spain got on the wrong ferry and found themselves in Cornwall. They blamed their sat nav.
