Rear view cameras on caravans
We have been caravanning since 1974 and consider ourselves fairly experienced. Having recently had an incident where a car was so close to the back of the van that I could not see it, I am interested to know if anyone has experience of fitting a wireless digital rear-view camera and monitor. If so, what unit do you have fitted and can you advise me about potential issues in fitting the camera/transmitter. I envisage wiring it into pin 9 (red/brown) permanent live and pin 11 (blue/white) earth.

My thoughts on this are why bother?
If someone is that close then a camera isn't going to make them pull back and I suspect you being able to see them on a screen in the car is simply going to make it a huge distraction for you by watching a monitor more than the road ahead.
Unless the camera enables you to actually do something about the car behind then personally I wouldn't waste the money on a big distraction to my driving.

just fitted a boscam k1. quite simple. located camera behind number plate, took wire down inside of rear valance, along floor underneath van fastening to existing wiring loom to front of van, into van through floor vent and mounted transmitter to front bulkead inside van. got power from van running lights which means camera is on only when you connect van to car. monitor on dashboard connected to cigarette lighter.
wouldnt say it was a brilliant picture but gives a good idea of whats behind you and great when overtaking and pulling back in.

We take delivery of our new twin axle Coachman in March 2022. I'm looking for help with supply & installation of a wireless rear view camera - I understand that using a reversing only camera can have it's problems with field of view etc?
I live in the Peterborough area but would prefer a mobile fitting if possible but happy to travel if it's the right one.
Please can anyone offer personal advice/recommendations - I believe the Auto-Vox M1 wireless is well thought of?

After much research we have now selected a camera and had it fitted to the caravan. The result is amazing. I can now see clearly directly behind the caravan in that dark spot which is blind to both mirrors. I selected a camera that was not the cheapest on the market by some margin but I am delighted with the result. The camera we chose was purchased from parkingcameras.com and cost £230 . It is their DW11 equipment with a 5inch screen. The company were superb in responding quickly to all my email queries. We bought the 60M version which gives a slightly lower refresh rate that the 100M version but even at max. towing speed of 60mph has not caused a problem. There are two versions offering 60degree and 120degree field of view. We chose the 60degree version which gives a more than adequate view to augment the existing external towing mirrors. Our caravan is 7.4m and the signal strength on the monitor on the dashboard top is maximum bars. I had the camera wired in to the ignition controlled live from the 13-pin plug so that the camera becomes live as soon as the ignition is switched on although there is a short delay while the split charge relay switches in. The camera was fitted by UK Towbars in March (https://www.uk-towbars.net/) and took about 2 1/2 hours. The job they did was extremely good and finished off to a high standard. This was not the cheapest mod to any caravan that we have owned, but I wish we had done it sooner. It makes driving much safer.
