Cancellation reasons

Just cancelled a club site for next week. Entirely due to the fuel situation but not a choice on reason given. Why not add Other and a box to write in?   Came back from holiday on Friday and have 150 miles in tank so unless I can refill this week I won't have enough.  I've seen in the news that nurses, doctors and teachers can't get to work this morning because of the panic buying , I don't want that on my conscience.

I personally would wish to keep any reason to myself.

there is fuel around & about .... My local Tesco had run out of 95RON unleaded, but they did had diesel at some of their pumps, I filled up (with diesel) there this morning. And I filled up fairly easily last Friday so I could get to work over the week end.

I knew EVs would come into their own eventually! 😂

Well thought out W, you did the right thing by putting others first, that is something to be proud of I applaud you👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻.

PS-the C&MC know you’ve acted within the rules, you’ve gone above & beyond.

That was a responsible action, Waffler.

The club added in covid to the list of cancellation reasons at one time so perhaps fuel shortage could also be added. I suspect the software can't cope with us writing comments.

We were on the A303 this morning, a main route for travel, on the way out two large garages had queues. On the way back one had run out.

Couple of garages closed here but looking at the continuing flow in local asda I doubt the problem is shortage so much as panic

Hallo slightly off topic but I would like to ask if anyone living up North and in  Scotland are having the same fuel problems as we are in the South. I ask because we have booked a  3 week trip up to Highlands and Outer Hebrides in our diesel campervan starting tomorrow,  all packed, everything booked including ferries. We filled up 2 weeks ago in readiness  so will be able to make it to Carlisle, before refilling,  onwards to Fort William, Skye, Islands, Dunnet Bay, Culloden etc,    Hondaman himself is confident  all will be well fuelwise, but just thought I would seek advice from those in the know and helpful with it !  Many thanks, Mrs HM.

We are based in South Yorks, and have a lot of panic prone flappers. So yes, some service stations have run out, particularly of diesel. However, everyone is now not driving around but has a full tank, so logic dictates that once, if/when the next deliveries are made, then there ought to be less reason for folks to panic. I haven’t seen anyone filling up big plastic containers, or things like oil drums, but having little faith in some around here, wouldn’t discount it happening😂

The powers that be are holding off on getting the Army in at the moment to help out, decided it’s not needed yet. Personally, I think it’s more that they are a little busy helping drive Ambulances, and there aren’t actually that many of them now.......

If only those making decisions had listened months ago to the Hauliers Association.........

We all know there is no fuel shortage. Which isn’t a comfort really given that it’s merely a logistics issue. This Gov doesn’t do logistics, ask those who needed PPE. Another shambolic situation.

I wouldn't worry about  your reason W as you cancelled outside of the 72 rule you have nothing to worry about or reproach yourself with.

Also don't worry about the reason drop down box, I suspect it's probably more to do with the club wanting to find out for reporting back and future planning. As I said if outside of the cancellation time no reason is needed at all

I can see what the OP means but hopefully this current situation will be short lived and it won't be a regular reason for not getting to the site. We would have to understand why the Club asks the questions they do in the first place? I suspect they are just general categories so they can judge what the main reasons are for cancellations. They are, of course, relying on members being completely honest!  It would only be in a case of a serial canceller that the given information would ever be delved into? The simple answer would be for members to write their reasons in a single text box but that would require a lot more work to get the the reasons behind a booking being cancelled.

As to the 'shortage' I was over in Keswick yesterday and no ques at either of the two stations. There was a £30 limit at Scotch corner services at 8pm but no queues.

Having said that our local Wild Bean garage was closed yesterday evening but open again this morning.

I would set off - there may well be fuel on the M6 but if not then sit it out for a few days at Thacka Lea site at Penrith - just short of your dry up point of Carlisle. If you are stuck there for a while you can explore the local area by bus till the situation improves. Good luck.

Except there is also a shortage of energy. If we all plugged in our cars, the grid would collapse.

No NutsyH, if we all unplugged a few things we'd have a bit more energy generally.

We didn't plug in last night but still had enough electric power in our EV for a journey today.

Hope the situation resolves itself soon.

I honestly think you will be fine but just keep an eye on the news updates.

EWe're heading south but only to Lancashire next Tuesday.

Oh dear Vulcan,  I can just imagine a couple of CalMac's best running out of fuel  four nautical miles or so from Uig and the Tannoy calling for volunteers to man the oars  . . . . . laughing

Many thanks for your replies,  useful info and very kind of you all. We are definitely going now, and if CalMac needs volunteers to man the oars, I will suggest Hondaman  himself for one of them !  Mrs HM

Wouldn’t worry about it. I suspect the process of applying warnings/sanctions for sub 72hrs cancellation or no-shows is just a perfunctory way of dealing with a persistent issue. I once received a warning letter for such misdemeanours all unavoidable on my part. All I needed to do was contact the Club and explain my circumstances and why this has happened (care responsibility for elderly parent with dementia). The Club was completely sympathetic and reasonable. As far as information for fuel supply monitoring purposes is concerned I’m not sure it’s of any use?

Just returned today from the very same trip! Small pockets of problems but generally diesel was easy to come by.

I filled up at Asda, North of Glasgow, and it just got my CV20 back to Essex with the needle on red. Yes, I was the guy doing 55/60 all the way!

A few stations on the A1 had fuel and longish queues but majority were closed.

Just cancelled Cornwall because of fuel, didn't fancy having an empty tank when we got there or worse running out on way there, we are still going to Cirencester in a couple of weeks, which was our stop on the way back and changing it for a longer stay

Reluctantly done the same….currently in the New Forest and was planning Crystal Palace as the next stop. However, don’t fancy my chances in the London area. There’s always another day (hopefully).

On the specific point raised by the OP - namely the options available for reasons for cancelling, I must say I entirely agree. I remember once, some years ago, having to cancel for a very genuine reason which was not even remotely covered by the options. I emailed the club to explain because I hate cancelling and always feel the circumstances should be made clear to ensure one is not accused of playing the system  - especially as there seems to be an assumption in this place that a lot of that goes on. That assumption may be right, I could not say, but I have only ever cancelled for genuine reasons and I do not think there is anything that upsets me more than being the subject of false accusations.

I was most pleased to get a lovely reply, essentially telling me not to worry and that my circumstances were fully appreciated. Of course anyone abusing the booking system can make any reason up, but, nonetheless, it would be nice if there was the space and opportunity to explain the circumstances in full - especially if the cancellation is within 72 hours.

I suspect shortly that whatever you put into the system might prove academic. Once deposits become the norm, Members will have to go into a long drawn out explanation with proof to get any reimbursement. Taking out holiday insurance for pre booked expensive long stays will become the norm, as it is with booking a cottage. Either that or you lose it.

I think I will go through the long drawn out explanation with proof, if the club offers it. At least I should only loose the deposit. My only experience of claiming on holiday insurance, when my mum died, was the wanted lots and lots of proof. Even to the extent that we had to pay for a doctors letter to say there was no way we could have known when we booked the holiday 6 months before. Then they took two lots of £40 excess, one for each of use.

Would the Club ever want that? As I mentioned up thread the categories used seemed to be just general headings so that the Club can categorise the reasons en masse rather than individually. I suppose the only time they would want more information was if they were at the point of suspending a member for frequent cancellations under 72 hours. If there were mitigating circumstances surely it would be sensible to discuss those with the Club, even if it were only in general terms? They can't, and  probably wouldn't demand it but it might be helpful to both parties to at least share something or be prepared to forfeit membership.
