Cost of C & MC sites

We are OK at the moment with cc site pricing, and as posted , next year maybe our last, with touring for the periods we have enjoyed so far
It will be interesting if some of the changes rumoured to be in the pipeline come about ? the club will ask for deposits? on sites that many members have already booked? if so this may well be the last year, , as it was already quite stressful when we had to rearrange this tour at short notice, trying to get pitches to keep some continuity

So why is a Friday the same price as (what most folk perceive to be) the 'weekend'?
While most 'weekenders' arrive on a Friday evening after work and then leave on a Sunday morning, the club catches these on both days by hiking (not reducing) the Friday price.
all well and good if Sunday prices are lower, but the club also catches Sunday nighters 'as its the (three day) weekend'.
Just browsing the Hillhead prices and noticed the summer price for a serviced pitch is £54.50!
Approaching Concierge Camping prices, it seems (one for John)

The C&CC system is OK if everything goes to plan, ie you pay a deposit and you actually honour the booking by turning up at the site. There are even some advantages like being able to find a pitch and book at relative short notice. Where many of the complaints come from is an apparent complete lack of flexibility if things go wrong like moving a deposit to a different time or losing it altogether. I suppose the test for any new CMC will be whether its considered fair and flexible by members but until we see the details it is difficult to compare.

Don't know whether it is down to me or the site. Its is difficult to see what you are typing on this site and I think it occurs when you try and do an edit to make corrections. I can certainly type faster than it appears. There is quite a lag between input and output and it only occurs on this site.

It will be interesting to see how they treat existing, pre change, bookings. Will they let them just work their way out of the system or will members be expected to pay a deposit post booking? You could perhaps imagine a situation where those that have made lots of bookings you will suddenly see mass cancellations? Unless of course they cancel all outstanding bookings and invite members to rebook with a deposit, not sure that would be popular?

Simplest way to introduce booking deposits is to start them from a month in the future that has not yet been released for booking. That has the additional advantage that by the time it comes around to make the booked visit we will have had a year of paying deposits to get used to the idea.

My betting is after the introduction they will let the existing non deposit bookings work out of the system.

I didn’t have any problems moving the deposit. It was one we had already moved on a year from May 2020 due to covid. I phoned over a month before, as it coincided with our second jab. I was told I could move it or have a refund. I opted to move it to another site this August. I suppose if there was a problem it was the time it took and that was just for one booking. If it was a string, I would have been on for ages.
Similarly when I was sent a new credit card. I rang to inform them of the change, as they take the residual on the morning of arrival. It could not be done centrally and had to be applied to each booking and an additional pound debited from each. There were four bookings and it took about 15 minutes.

Some of the Camping Club sites look just the same as ones "owned" by the Club, but they are actually owned by their operators (or a third party). I recall a long explanation of this from a warden/owner to an American who loudly wanted to know why he could not transfer deposits to another site. As neither site involved was actually a Camping Club operated site, the accountancy required stopped it from happening.
At least the Caravan Club labels them as Affiliated Sites.

I agree that would be the logical way forward. It would also, for many, mean the introduction of deposits wouldn't be felt for some time which would give people time to time to get used to the new system. However it would mean that those who don't book months in advance would be seem to be at a disadvantage. If they do as you suggest, depending on the notice given, it might create a rush to get even more bookings in place before the deadline?

It’d not do much for goodwill, though😕

I am sure you are right. However can you imagine the outrage that would cause? It wouldn't just be a question of having to pay a deposit that would cause that upset but the probability that plans people had made could no longer be honoured if people with those booking couldn't actually rebook the dates they wanted. Hopefully the Club will use some common sense?

Yes, I'm sure they will but it's possible that they could ask for deposits from all those who have booked. In which case those concerned will not lose their bookings. But then I'm probably on the wrong thread for a deposit discussion! The one sure thing is rising prices.

None of those above problems would exist if deposits were to be introduced from a future date for which no-one has yet been able to make a booking.

I would have thought it would be possible to introduce it from next week for future bookings. Any existing ones would remain exempt, with the full cost payable on arrival. If you were to amend an existing booking that would then trigger a deposit.

I am gob smacked, just went to book Knaresborough for a December stop overand and its £38.10 p.n. Ok so it has a restaurant but........
Needless to say I think I will give it a miss if I can find an alternative near Harrogate. The show ground site closes for the winter, pity that would have been ideal.

Good choice!

But why you had to post is to tell us is puzzling? Are you frightened someone might book by accident?
The subject is cost of sites!., Even Rowntree is cheaper. Having stayed at Knaresborough in recent times, so I know the site, I am truely shocked at that price for a winter stopover.

As we're swopping booking plans I looked at the Quiet site for 10 days in October and was amazed it was about £50 more expensive than the club's Troutbeck Head site a few miles away. Needless to say I gave the Quiet site a miss.

Cost of sites is indeed the subject, not being shocked!
Post edit - being amazed is OK.

Thanks. But it's your choice, it's you who have to approve not me
