I only mentioned tethering to make the two comparable for screen size

How does tethering or not affect screen size?

No idea other than if you use a smart phone directly it has a smaller screen than a lap top etc tethered to it

I am not travelling at present but in previous years I have been generally happy with Club wifi.

And that is what some of us have been saying all along. A lot of posters say that the wifi should be 'free' that is included into the pitch fee. But of course nothing is 'free' and if the club were to do this the cost of that (plus installation?) would affect prices, or if 'absorbed' other services will not get their allocation of money as there is only a finite amount?

Personally I am in the pay for it if you want it, I have done without it for a while and even when I did pay it was no better than the service from my phone. If it was excellent then I might pay for it again.

I have found the same as you  and with our high  normal use of club sites  I have yet to find a cheaper alternative,,that can be used on all club sites that are connected

I’m not sure why there is such a problem with folk mentioning tethering, or not as the case may be. It is surely an alternative to the currently dire Wi-fi the OP is having problems with. I access CT on an iPad, I can either log on to the site Wi-fi, now we’ve moved on its friendly Wi-fi and although slow is currently working for me to post.😇 If it wasn’t I would connect to the OH’s iphone on O2, which seems to have a decent signal. Mine on EE although saying 4G is showing a download of only 0.3 MB. Of course they do sell pads with the ability to install a SIM and then of course it would not be necessary to connect or tether to another device. Basically I use what is best and cost effective for my purpose and currently that isn’t CAMC WiFi.

I tether too, Steve. It's the way to go in my opinion and I knew you’d see the issue with site Wi-fi one day😀

The problem arose due to misquotes/misunderstandings and not with the term itself.

Whilst CAMC have a "pay for it if you want it" policy with WiFI, it is regrettable that it does not extend to EHU or, indeed, the toilet block which is invariably accessed with a key.

I suppose the counter argument might be is that the EHU is very good and the toilet block are excellent and certainly very clean so worth' paying' for while the wifi is not?

Does any major site provider have 'pay extra' for the toilet block?

A sort of "Pay as you Go" type of thing?

well yes but I'm thinking of a blanket extra charge for access to the shower/toilet block as CY would like, or rather opt out of paying.

I've looked a few major sites (and the other club) and the cost 'includes' access to the facilities block.

I've certainly been on sites where we've had to pay for showers, put I can't recall ever ever being asked to 'spend a penny' - or whatever the inflated price now is... 😃😃

Err you use your laptop so have a screen the size of your laptop, and not the mobile phone
Mobile Data has nothing to do with the issue of the clubs pay for Wi Fi
However on tethering this might help

Surely it depends on what you tether. I use an iPad and am currently tethered, cable less, to my OH’s phone. I don’t have an EE signal on mine here, so to check my WhatsApp I also tether my phone to hers occasionally.

Though again this has nothing to do with the issue of the Opening Post, i did not say the only thing you can tether your mobile to, is a laptop

The issue is i paid for a years access, and out of 9 sites i visited this year, only one had a slow but working Wi FI. the others where unbelievably slow, they crashed, time out, froze , lost connection etc
1 site being gold, 7 sites being silver , 1 Bronze ,on all sites only basic web access was used,  and no video  streaming

A know a lot of defend the club at any cost members will disagree ,but that is the practical truth ,and real world experience of the clubs WiFi service
Using mobile data to get round this issue, is not relevant to the Clubs WiFi service
If i had known how poor a service it is ,thats if you can call it  a service, i would never have purchased the service . Though i expected it to be poor, compared to my home service , i never expected it to be as bad ,as it is

sorry that does not answer the question I asked:

you posted: I only mentioned tethering to make the two comparable for screen size

I asked how does tethering (you mentioned) affect screen size?

I don't think you have answered.

As I put above JVB, might depend if you pay. We were at Clumber when I wrote that reply to you. Couldn’t get on for over 15 hours. If the ease of  access is different  on the free part, it certainly isn’t going to encourage folk to pay for it.

    Steve

That is an interesting thought re the difference between paying and using it just for the Club website for free. We have experienced exactly the same when trying to get onto the Club website without a WiFi subscription. I suppose people could argue that those that pay should have priority as they have invested in a subscription. However it's odd that people just wanting to use the Club's website seem to have so much trouble. Hardly an incentive to pay for the WiFi? When I have had a subscription if seemed to have a reasonably steady connection but always on the slow side. After our last trip we have upgraded Margaret's data package with Tesco (02) and actually saved £1.50 a month into the bargain so hopefully we have covered most bases. There will always be sites like Clumber and Buxton where the mobile signal is very poor but at least you visit such sites knowing this to be the case.

I am at Burford at the moment which is a Gold site with speeds of up to 100mbps according to the club. In reality the service is terrible with extremely slow speeds for the most basic of tasks. When I talked to the help desk they said that the 100mbps is the speed to the site and that if you were lucky you would get 4 mbps, in fact I find I’m lucky to get 2. I think the description of site wifi which is given needs to reflect the reality on the sites themselves. When you compare this with the 600 mbps I get at home it makes you think the club has chosen the wrong supplier for it’s site’s. The only reason I am not tethering my devices is that the phone signal is bad here as well.

Open Reach were doing something to improve the web supplying Burrs last week .... no idea what exactly, but it involved lots of fibre cables
