Travelling to Spain

Usually we travel down through France to holiday near Almeria for the winter but this year we have booked

the Santander ferry.    The question is :- which is the better route - Santander to Madrid to Almeria or

Santander to Zaragoza to Almeria and down the  east side of the country?

We have always come from France and down the east side but we have returned via the Madrid to Santander

which seems a more direct route.

Travelling out in Dec, is either route more prone to snow than the other ?

Any advice or opinions anyone ?

Myself I prefer the Zaragosa route.

We used the Zaragoza route a couple of years ago heading for Alicante. I'm fairly sure there has been winter snow around Madrid causing problems. We used the Campsite at Zaragoza to overnight before the run to Alicante Imperium.

Hi, we've tried both routes. As stated earlier, Madrid is colder and does get a lot of snow. We prefer the Zaragoza route and stop at Sergobe then travel on South.  It may be a little longer but we think its easier and the whole route is less likely to be troubled by snow.

As a question, are you all sorted with your "Covid Pass", Do you anticipate any problems getting to Spain?  Are you having a test before you go? Or just using the pass letter?

We're tempted to escape the winter here in 2022, probably mid-January to early March. We're familiar with motorhoming in France, but our only experience of Spain was on a huge site, are they mostly large sprawling sites?

    What about Portugal?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    fwiw ...

Reply to your specific post & other thread question. Your post is a common general one about a vast subject.

We first sought an overwinter escape from short Pennine grey days in Winter 2017/18.

The key criteria for us for overwintering was the high chance of dry weather, blue skies and some warmth, choice of Beach walks direct from a smaller more rustic site (2dogs) and some local facilites & interest. Have read many times prior as a basic view is to go South of Valencia for more warmth, Malaga westwards can be mixed / cloudy & Portugal windy as can sometimes be the southern coast of Spain - await multiple critic on this point.

A quick google should again confirm that Europe's only drier 'Desert' zone is in SE Spain on the Northern Almeria / southern Murcia region.  Almeria greater city region on the SE corner away to the south of our chosen site is though, in my & other opinions, a truly dreadful blighted area due to vast & extensive miles of plastic greenhouse horticulture growing a large proportion of Europe's Vegetables.

There are many, in our opinion, good, bad, awful & in-different sites throughout Spain and on or around the Coast even in our chosen area. Our site preference(s) is likely not yours though and sometimes reviews have fib's within but regardless am very loathe to make specific recommends. So without knowledge we were recommended and did in 2017 a cheap 7 day fly drive / 3 hotels trip from West of Malaga and ended up in Murcia area and we toured & viewed countless sites - highly recommended to you & all and we included some of the contemplated Winter Rally venues. We refused to tow our Caravan 1650 miles to turn up intending to stop for likely weeks on an awful site and were very glad we visited most of the shortlisted ones prior. As it happens the simple rustic site we chose & have returned to 3 Winters has very mediocre & poor reviews and did have a very poor website but it clicked immediately we pulled the hire car into the parking area & we like it.

With a Motorhome you of course have chance (or desire maybe without own transport) to travel onwards site to site but for an extended Winter trip at some point you will need to stay a while (somewhere).

Hope this maybe helps you and other readers start with the basics.

    Await extensive critic ....

Thankyou Montesa, in fact your key criteria seem to match ours! I

would love to know the name of the rustic site that you mention. Don't worry, we'll do our own research before we decide and won't blame you if we don't like it!

We're definitely starting off in Andalucia, to visit family, but after that? Well, lots of research to do.

     Hi Wendy14,

Our preferred (overwinter) site is noted for the ongoing poor & negative reviews (some by the regulars !) which keeps it reasonably quiet in Winter when it's different again. The poor reviews will likely put you off ! It is not particularly special but really suits us our checklist. In summer (wouldnt visit then) it is a very popular site with hedonistic lively Spaniards etc & for the local huge beach Music festival etc. NB Extreme heat in Summer & pool is open then.

Cuevas Mar near Villaricos should find it. We normally pitch on the Textile part (tut tut).
