yes, we're lucky the nearest passport office to us is 10 miles away.
Three weeks? You can also book an appointment and collect it in one day for £177, or £187 for a frequent traveller passport.

Ah right, so it's not three weeks for every one, confusion cleared up.
At least she'll get the 'new' UK blue/black passport.

I blame the info on the website during lockdown. Mine was up for renewal and when I went on the site it said do not apply unless you really need one. I have relatives in France, so how did I know if I might need one at short notice, so I applied. A nice new blue one arrived with 5 days. I would say they had plenty of extra capacity and by putting folk off, we now have a 10 week wait unless you are prepared to pay extra.

Ours run out next February so perhaps I need to start the renewal process now? Not currently planning on going anywhere where I might need it.

I am not entirely sure this is correct.
As far as I know the EU countries are only concerned about you having 90 days left on your passport at the end of your trip so if you are only going for 1 month and have 5 months left on your passport then it's ok. The UK Government appear to think everyone needs 90 days plus the maximum 90 days that you are allowed from the beginning, hence the 6 months on their website.
I did post about this on one of the other threads a couple of weeks ago after reading about it in the travel section of a paper. A couple had been refused boarding a plane for a weeks holiday even though they had 4 months left on their passports. The airline acknowledged they made a mistake and flew them out within a day or two at their own expense. Spain accepted them.
I can't for the life of me find the reference or even my post but maybe somebody could throw some light on it.
Edit - I remember the airline checked with EU and admitted UK gov website was wrong.

I read something about that on my news feed the other day.
The EU are only asking for 90 days and the UK website is incorrect.
The other thing it said was that the EU will only allow 10 years on your passport, which they take from the date of issue. If your passport has an extended date on it like ours does, they do not recognize the extension. So be sure to check your passport from date of issue not when its due to expiry. We have an extra 9 months on ours which will be of no use.
