Towing and favourite sites in Netherlands

I may be being over optimistic, but currently looking at sites for the Netherlands for August.  Can anyone recommend dutch sites and advice what the roads are like for towing there.  Our van is an 8FT wide one.

    The roads are fine but the traffic in the central Randstad area is busy.

    But where do you want to go ?- Groningen, Maastricht and Middelburg are all interesting but they are 200 miles apart.

    Here’s a photo of a small site we liked at Lelystad called Camping t’Opertje, but you may prefer a different style of campsite altogether.

    That looks like a really lovely site, thank you.  Will look into it.  Wasn't also considering De Paal or as we have children in tow, but I'm concerned it may feel too big for us.  Also looking at Camping Koningshof

    Having been to Koningshof a couple of times it is far from being a small quiet site. It has excellent facilities and if you are going in August it will be full as its a very popular site. A lot of Dutch sites are more like Holiday Centres and the smaller quieter ones tend not to have the facilities you might want for your children, so a bit of a trade off. Our first visit was with, our then, teenage sons and they loved the site.

    We haven't caravanned over in the Netherlands with children so can't advise on any suitable sites but towing on the main roads is straightforward. Try not to go off piste as it can be quite easy to get disorientated in back streets and they do go in for a lot of street calming measures.

    Be prepared on some campsites to have to leave your car in designated parking areas away from your caravan. It's quite normal. Some UK travellers don't like this idea but it hasn't bothered us.

    Take bicycles if you can. It's the best country to cycle in and the BIKE is King/Queen.

    Not overly certain you'll make it in August the way things are going but there's always next year. We were hoping to go this year in September but gave up on the idea fairly early on.

    I had that "leave your car elsewhere" on a site I stayed in at Spaarnwoude. The caravan I had at the time back in the eighties relied on the car for the electrics, so we were down to a single gas mantle! Fortunately it was early July and long evenings and nothing else needed electricity. Presumably motorhomes going out for the day is discouraged.

    Stayed on a site a couple of years ago and they had the Motorhomes in a separate area near to the exit road.

    Hallo AnnaMB,

    check on the website Roompot.com they have 188 campsites all over the Netherlands.

    you can change the language to english by clicking on the flag.

    Was on one of there bigger ones at Domburg Zeeland - Hof Domburg, a nice and clean site with lots for children to do.

    Holland is a lovely country with lovely people and we have had several holiday there.

    Our friends live in Eerbeek near Arnhem and we have stayed afew times at Camping Coldenhove which is a Landal Greenparks site-landal.nl.

    The do a lot of bungalow/camping parks and that one has a great indoor pool.

    I have only used two sites in the Netherlands >Camping Koningshof< already mentioned above and >Camping Warnsborn< just outside Arnhem. Both are fine for 8ft wide vans.

    So many possibilities… here’s another we liked … Camping de Meidoorn at Sluis … a really delightful little town, only 8 miles from the big beach by the sea , and right on the Belgian border so only a 12 mile drive to visit Bruges

    In the Netherlands we have a caravan club similar to our Caravan and Motorhome Club. It's called the NCC (Netherlands Caravan Club).

    There is an agreement between the two clubs so as a a member you are allowed to visit the campsites of the NCC. 

    The NCC runs several sites all over the Netherlands. All sites are small but well-equipped and mostly quite remote and beautifull.
