Caravan Insurance gone up again
Just received my Caravan Club renewal and the price has gone up yet again. Anyone found a decently priced caravan insurance.

I posted this on another forum a few months ago for my 2017 Eriba. It might help:-
I know we all have different requirements, ages and locations differ, but this comparison on a like for like basis where possible may be of use.
The only differences lay in x/s where some policies would not go down to £100 and where they would this would still stand at a higher level for awning damage. All are for a wheel clamp and hitch lock for security. Some companies I contacted would not quote due to value of van and only two anti-theft devices.
Quotes are based on £25K [van, mover, awning etc] new for old, £500 contents, a low x/s of £100. European cover, no previous claims, legal expenses, stored at home, ins tax etc etc.Lifesure - 2020-21 = £255
Lifesure - 2021-22 = £351
C&MC - 2021-22 = £431
SAGA - 2021-22 = £351
Caravanguard - 2021-22 = £327
Adrian Flux - 2021-22 = £434
Towergate - 2021-22 = £462Cover4Caravans quoted £281 and £568. When I asked why the difference it was because the underwriter quoting £281 required CRIS registration. I explained no UK van is supplied like this and very few owners have gone through the process. I was then informed the broker was allowed to offer the second underwriter, Zenith at £568 for the price match at £281 if lack of CRIS was the reason for not being able to take out the cheaper policy. It got better as I phoned today to confirm I would take out new policy but asked about raising the x/s to get the price down a little more. No problem they dropped to £268 and have left the x/s at £100
The only drawback I can see is the new for old only runs for vans up to 5 years old.

I always had other questions in mind besides price alone.
What security equipment does the insurance company require for storage here at home - I was never prepared to have more than a hitchlock - and no wheellocks or trackers.
What are the requirements for fitting security to the caravan in a supermarket car park while I go into the store for half an hour for shopping .
Is cover valid for Europe as well as UK.
Is the insurance valid if I have to leave the caravan unattended because of an emergency return home from Europe as well as UK - for some days or weeks if need be.
What are the arrangements for repair of a damaged Cavan and the return of it to me after repair - whether from Europe as well as UK.
What is the excess?

My CAMC cover came in this week, for some reason it is £5.43 more expensive.
Post edit, I mean why £5 and 43p exactly, I realise that things go up but where does the 43 p come from. I did check with other providers and it appears good value and also taking into account the positive things people have posted about claims.

Amazing that insurance has gone up again after nearly two years when the caravan hasn't turned a wheel.
Anyway, my CAMC "insurance" (which it isn't, it's Cover) quotation, came in at a tad over £600. Ripe insurance (underwritten by Aviva) was £260. Same cover. Guess who got my business?

Given that 99% of members have not used their van for most of the last 12 months due to lockdown, I would assume the caravan insurers will have paid out very little in claims. How therefore can they justify any increase in premiums ???
Directline gave policy holders a refund for reduced mileage during the same period
Discuss please

I very much doubt your 99% figure, MS, but even if correct, not using a van does not prevent it being stolen, broken into, vandalised etc and all of those are events covered by insurance. In the case of caravans, I think there is some justification for saying not using it is a higher insurance risk than using it.

Whilst our use was substantially down last year, we did use our MH for 30 nights away, plus odd day trips to keep the oily bits happy when allowed. Judging by the number on sites ( both MH and caravan) many were out and about. Given the high demand for both MH’s and caravans I am sure thefts must be up.

We managed 41 nights last year despite the constraints of Covid. This year looks like it could be about 60-70 which is probably as much as we can fit in anyway. In normal times that might drop back to around 45-50 if we go on a cruise.

My CAMC insurance has gone up this year - can't remember by how much off hand. (We pay monthly so, it's less noticable). The main reason for our increase is that our caravan is now 5 years old. With the CAMC you are covered 'New for Old' should you need to claim a total loss. After 5 years, in order to get 'New for Old' cover, you need to move to the 'Super Policy', which, of course, is more expensive...
