Distance from town
I've just read the list of newly opened cl's in The Magazine. For those that may not read the magzine one is listed under Oakham in Rutland and states it is 13 mile east from the town. Surely there must be a town geographically nearer than that. So I looked on Google Maps and the nearest town to the cl if Stamford a distance of only 3 miles. Doesn't make sense.
What criteria does the club use to plot a cl's location?

I might imagine that the club takes information from the CL itself and perhaps doesn't do much checking?
Or there is the business/tourist angle that is is used in many such instances, that is list the town that is more likely to attract visitors?

So who would use the business/tourist angle in this instance. Whilst Oakham is close to Rutland Water, with 7 cl's, Stamford is just a few miles further away but also has the extra pull of Burleigh House and is also a big tourist town in Rutland

No idea who would, I merely offered it as a possible explanation, hence my question mark at the end.
When I look at a new site I look at various maps and work it out for myself and look what is nearby and what isn't. I don't personally think it's a big problem but why not write in and ask the club?

The cl in question seems to be in Lincs but has a Peterborough postcode. Oakham is in Rutland and has a Leicetershire post code
The club site in the area that used to be called Top Lodge and is now called Stamford which is in Lincolnshire but has a Norhampton post code.
I'm now totally confused

Yes, what happens when you search for the CL online? Does it come up in the right area/postcode/town?

I prefer to search using the map either the Club's one on line or ones I have created by downloading the POIs onto my digital OS maps or onto Google Maps. The latter allows a satellite or street view of the CL locaity.

the one (site not CL) that always gets me is Bath Chew Valley....its miles (14 ml, quickest route, 37 mins in a car) from Bath....
its actually closer to Bristol...but perhaps not the same 'cachet'?
might be the same sort of thing with CLs?
i dont filter by county as i cant be sure i know every town in every county.....a really nice CL might be a mile over the border and would be missed...
like Peedee, i pick my rough destination and then use googlemaps to spread out from there get more precise info and add the sitefinder apps to tie sites to that location.
if looking for Bath.....it certainly wouldnt be Chew Valley...

Newstead Lane - the address of the CL - is part in Rutland and part in Lincolnshire. For a short distance it runs along the boundary. The village of Belmesthorpe is in Rutland. No idea where exactly on the lane the CL is.
I would say that Stamford is more of a tourist town than Oakham.
I have farming friends whose land is part in Rutland and part in Lincs. Their house is in Lincs, but their postal adress is Oakham and their post code is LE. Post codes are no respecters of county boundaries.

I use the Club map to look for CLs for these very reasons. Any sites anywhere near county/borough boundaries seem to be in either county on the web site list. I wish the Club would put the site map on line, with a web link to the site description. I also wish they would use the site number (from the map) on the site title on the web site. It is as though they are two completely different systems!!!

...and for me....
i actually use the googlemaps app on ipad and its great for most things but im not sure if the data overlaid by Peedee can be applied to the app version....?
either way, Peedee's map is very useful.
i remember someone sent me a link with pubstops overlaid in the same way....but i may have lost it....

Click on the little square on the bottom left of the screen will alter the terrain view. As far a I know you cannot get street view direct from this page. You have to open the home view in Google Maps in another tab and go to the location you have chosen and click on the little yellow man in the bottom left hand corner to highlight roads with a street view.

You can do much the same using the Clubs map search and get a street view using the little yellow man. I would hope it is much more up to date than anything derived from the POIs which can be a year or sometimes more out of date.

Peedee, your map is much easier to navigate than the club's, I find. What I've been doing is selecting a CL off your map then going to the CL Search page to find the site and then viewing it's location, street view etc from the dropdown map and site directions. However I do find full page Google Earth maps easier to navigate with the little yellow man when viewing roads and site signs/entrances.

If you're going anywhere near there, I can recommend Lyndon Top campsite overlooking Rutland Water. Walking distance to the ospreys for those of an ornithological bent.
