Caravans and motorhomes with offside door

I think that expecting 'privacy' on a campsite is just expecting too much in my view. There is a limit on what can be expected in any event.
And, I've said this before, what are people doing in awnings (or doorways) that demand so much 'privacy'? We eat, read, and sit and in ours and that's about it. If anyone really wants to watch us that please pull up a chair and it won't bother us. If we have people sleeping or getting dressed then we draw the curtains, in fact exactly like in the caravan.

I can't understand why face to face awning is 'not good' (there will still be 3m at least between you - are your guy ropes that long by the way) but that's your decision and up to you. But perhaps as this is not only permitted on club sites but quite common maybe club sites aren't the best choice?

It would be nice to think that people gave a bit of thought for others when they pitched. It is not just people who have the door on the offside. Some with the door on the nearside may well park nose in to be in a position to get the sun but in doing so robs both themselves and their neighbours of privacy. I know many don't like the idea and will disagree with me but I have always thought that it would be better to have the peg in the left hand corner of the pitch which would immediately expand the distance between habitation units. It would mean the car was in front of the awning which to me gives even more privacy. If it is perceived to be a big problem another solution would be to grow hedges between pitches. There are a couple of CMC sites I have stayed where this is the case, White Water Park being one.

We have just arrived at Hunters Moon, not so many hardstandings available, the one we are on is next to a Hobby MH which has reversed in and have their chairs etc out, facing our door. Once we have awning up we can sit and chat with them when they come "home".
Not particularly bothered as we will be out every day if weather decent.

I suggest these people demanding ‘privacy’ don’t go to a European site.
And as for people getting undressed... Feikorpkultur is a very German thing on site.
but I do love sites abroad, everyones there to enjoy themselves, not worry themselves about pegs and doors.

Can’t be having hedges, interferes with the little orange tractors relentless war with the grass.

What would you have ‘made clear’ with your guide ropes?

I totally agree with your comments, it has always seemed to me that it would be the best way to go. I have seen it on a few sites and it always worked well especially when the pitch is a bit narrow and you have to park with two wheels on the grass to avoid the water container on a hard standing.

At the moment the peg is (roughly) in the middle of the pitch so if every peg is moved to the left hand corner how will it immediately expand the distance between habitation units. If every peg moves (say 3m) leftwards then so does every caravan, nothing has changed? The distance between units will not change?
Also easy to define on gravel pitches but where is the corner on grass pitches? Additionally the aquaroll, wastermaster and EHU will now be on the grass strip? Not what I have an HS pitch for?

Thoughts? I think that covers every pitching option!
one of my favourite sites.

If I've understood correctly, wouldn’t DK's way mean you'd need to pitch the caravan to the left, then attach your awning and park your car outside your awning windows? As a caravanner, how do you feel about that, Corners?🤔

You couldn't help but become friendly with your neighbours there.😂😂

Well I like the current model as all the 'hardware' EHU, water in and out, and the car is on the left (or right if pitched nose in) leaving the right (or left in pitched nose in) for awning and chairs.

Thanks, I imagined that would be the response.

OMG I can see a MH with the door on the wrong side, so it must be ‘over there’ or a rude, thoughtless, ignorant Brit who doesn’t understand the fundamentals of campsite etiquette!

I am not sure how many Continental caravans you see on Club sites? In my experience the vast majority of overseas visitors arrive in motorhomes so it wouldn't be an issue. The Dutch, the most likely visitors with caravans, tend to have much smaller vans and are well practised at manoeuvring into tight spots without the aid of a mover? The most usual way of pitching in Europe is across the pitch and in most instances this will automatically mean a degree of man handling.
All I am trying to introduce to the discussion is a little bit of blue sky thinking. Unless you change the configuration of pitching on Club sites privacy will always be an issue in some circumstances. As most pitches are configured in rows on a Club site it would be possible for the final pitch (to the right) could have a pitch marker in each corner to allow nose in parking for off side door units affording even more spacing, providing of course that configuration didn't interfere with pitches in the row behind.
Perhaps this is a non issue and not worthy of debate but clearly some think it is a problem, as the subject has been aired all solutions should also be aired? People are obviously free to agree or disagree.

hedges are great for 'privacy' but the Club model of maximum pitches doesnt sit well, nor does the increased maintenance which wouldnt fit into the wardens schedule and would, apparently, drive prices up??
we've had hedges dividing pitching on many continental sites, had some last week at a commercial where hedging was used to break up a large site into smaller sections of 6 or so vans (like multiple CLs but with full facilities) which, along with no pegs or orientation rules, meant caravans, mh, uk or continental all pitched to suit yet caused no 'privacy issues'....whatever they might be.
no guy rope rage, no other rage at all really...
one increasing issue for folk wanting 'space/privacy' is the amount if kit and clobber that appears on some pitches....some folk want room for a car, some barrels of water, a caravan, an awning, some guy ropes, some sitting out space for their tables and chairs and even more room, please, to perhaps store/cover bikes etc with yet another tent...
the next chap wants the same space for an equally large amount of kit, yet neither of them wants to be close to the other?? and wants 'privacy'....
throw in the fact that some of these large caravans and kit count are towed by ever more monstrous tow cars (DIscoverys and Range Rovers) and these 'installations' take up a huge amount of space...we saw one such outfit at FM recently and to was like a small town being erected...definitely encroaching onto the next pitch which, being a solo MH appeared to have plenty of 'spare room' which was fair game for the 'property developer'....
perhaps we dont have the same anxiety as we dont have a car, or barrels, or an awning, or additional tents and our slim van always seems to be well away from 'the professionals'....whichever way we pitch (to suit us).

It is not so much continental caravans with wrong side habitation doors as there are far more motor caravans built in Europe on right hand drive base vehicles but still with continental Europe body's with off side habitation doors with canopy and awnings
There is a Sunlight so set up opposite us now

could have a pitch marker in each corner to allow nose in parking for off side door units affording even more spacing
You mentioned before about how pitching in the left hand corner would immediately expand the distance between habitation units. And now pitching in the right hand corner will afford even more spacing
You've got me puzzled again - how? If you think of a car, caravan, and awning as three rectangles (or even a slim fourth one for the aquaroll and wastermaster next to the caravan) fitting onto a pitch I can't see rearranging them from car, caravan, awning to caravan, awning, car, or now as you suggest car, awning, caravan makes any more space or affect the distance to the next outfit and/or adjacent wall?
I've drawn a few simple diagrams roughly to scale (and might cut the rectangles out in different coloured paper yes I know - I'm sad) and I just can't see how it will immediately expand the distance between habitation units, or affording even more spacing?
Also are most pitches in rows with an end? On the sites I've been on it's mostly circular arrangement

We had a Hobby and found no problem with the door on the opposite side, we simply turned the caravan 180 degrees so the hitch faced the rear of the pitch.

I don’t generally think there is a problem. As I put above, it is normally far easier to level if nose in, so the door is automatically on the “correct side”. Also on quite a lot of pitches the peg position favours the awning to the right, particularly the drive away type.
Quite often the MH alongside us with door facing is of UK design, driven nose in to facilitate levelling, placing the door on the “wrong side”.
I don’t have an issue either way.😀

The peg system is there for one simple reason - to allow a 6m minimum separation to an adjacent caravan/MH. Now is this a law/guideline? and should the club use it has been discussed many times but the bottom line is that it is what the club uses so we're stuck with it if one wants to use a club site.
Yes more spacing between pitches would be welcome but I suppose the idea is to make as much income as possible from the set area of land on a site. Increase the spacing and reduce the income? Double the spacing to 12m and half the income, I'm sure it's maybe not as simple as that but there must be some reduction if you have less paying outfits on a site.
Another bottom line is that many club sites are fullish over the next few months so people with caravans and MHs do seem to like them as they are. I for one want a viable club and as others have said the current pitching works great and I have no issues with whichever way you want to pitch/park, it's a campsite after all.
People complain they can't a get a pitch or can't get a full week in, reducing the number of pitches will only make this worse?
