I've just seen this on Facebook. Someone is making a cl from scratch and has listed the cost so far. It looks a major civil engineering job but makes interesting reading.

Tried link, but one has to be a group member to read the posts, so no good for me and many others I suppose.

I did say "for those with Facebook"

It's a pity as it's quite interesting, a  very expensive project.

From Facebook and cl owner. there are photo's but I can't load them

Here is our first update on creating Laggan CL.
We have had a great couple of days on the siteworks and things are starting to come together on the new CL. We have stripped around 600 tonnes of topsoil to get us down to the hard sub base. We have also recycled around 400 tonnes of sand & gravel to use to level off each pitch. The wee hole that we recycled the gravel from has been filled up with excess topsoil that we wont need. We have the first 2 pitches ready for the edgings that will differentiate between the pitches and the grass and should have another 2 complete tomorrow. All the underground pipes arrive in the morning so installing the field drains and grey waste points on the pitches will be on tomorrows to do list.
We have also been asked to keep a running total of the spend to make this happen, so here is week one's outlays.
Rolec EHU bollards including water taps £1648.24
Underground drainage pipes & fittings: £919.25
Underground water tank & submersible pump: £1882.80
SSE Electric new 100A power supply: £582.40
    Electric underground cabling: £887.66
Plastic solutions Elsan Disopsal Point: £406.20
Wi-fi upgrade to give 30 mps at all pitches: £947.25
    30 hours for excavator, dumper & driver : £3000.00
    TOTAL: £10273.80

To be fair, the items detailed suggest this new CL is very much towards the luxury end of the scale - exceeding many full size sites in it's salubriousness.   A tap and a place to empty chemical toilet could be achieved for a tiny fraction of the expenditure so far.

I wonder if there is a planned Phase Two move on to getting planning permission for a larger site?

Perhaps Cholsey or someone can persuade him to post the tale on here.

The cost of a planning application and the likelyhood of it being passed on the nod is nothing in the scale of things.

Of course a more basic CL would be much cheaper to set up. However there is clearly a demand for CL's with hardstandings and electrics. The purists might not agree but if the owner wants to have an extended season, and also encourage motorhomes, then hardstandings are probably the way to go. From reading the posts on the Facebook Group (thanks for the link Harry) I think his intention is to provide individual toilet/shower facilities in the future. Be interesting to see what the charges are when he gets to that stage.

With the increasing number who have embraced Solar and/or Lithium, I would venture to suggest that Hard Standing might be a more desirable facility than EHU, particularly from a season length perspective. Reduced running costs for the owner as well.

Harry, I am on FB, but am unwilling to sign up for yet another group just to read the odd post from them.

Thanks for the breakdown, all the same, it was most interesting.

Thinking of the future where gas to put into bottles will become rarer to obtain and be seen by the public as environmentally damaging we will have to rely on EHU to a much greater extent.  Maybe we will see caravan builders fitting electric ovens as well as hobs.

Interesting that the electricity supply mentioned above is 100 Amperes, which is just over the amount needed for five pitches, so maybe not intending to go over the CL numbers anytime soon.

And a lovely site it looks too. I wish them success and full bookings, except when I want to go.

Why has this post just appeared today, as it is dated 6/7/2021, and it wasn't on here yesterday?

Because CL Booking is both a new poster and a non-member so needed to be vetted.

It looks a bit strange to me. Hmm, are you thinking what I'm thinking, Nellie?

Edit: Yes, I'm right. Follow the link and go to the home page and it’s the CL Booking Site again😂

Didn't there used to be a CL at Laggan in the past? I seem to remember that we had consider stopping there but chose what was the then club site Invernahavon at Newtonmore instead.

You'll find, if booking some CLs that the group system is up and running and works well, so don't shoot the messenger too often. wink

The group system isn't the point, Brue, but I'm not going into details here.

No you don't have to. The CL is in an area I know well and it's good to see a new one coming along. It will be very useful for stop overs but worth a longer stay too. My favourite places round there are behind the ruined Ruthven Barracks and the beautiful Glen Feshie, it's also pleasant to take gentler walks into the Monahdliath Hills.  Hope the CL is a success! smile

PS if I've spelt the name of the hills wrong they know who they are....😊

No, you have spelt them correctly. Not the most inspiring range of mountains but still provide good days out.

I do wonder if the site is a new one though, or just an upgrade of a previous CL?

When I first posted this article the news broke on FB it was updated at various stages of the process and looking at the construction and costs I would hardly think it was an upgrade.

Being so few cl's in the area we should welcome it with open arms

Not a site to visit in the summer though, with a requirement to be "inside" by 10pm.

It is light until almost midnight this far north, and a favourite evening for me is to sit out and watch the sunset.

Not that you'll see the sunset in that area, too many hills in the way and it would take exceptionally warm weather to be sitting outside at 10pm...mind you I missed that bit and it does seem a bit constrictive! wink

Ah, Brue, you forget that I'm Scottish - and I have a coat as well!  In the last few weeks I've been sitting out late, and at places a bit further North than this one.

There is always a sunset whether there are hills or not. In fact, they often make it more spectacular than looking out at sea.

That’s why it says “from”. It’s not unusual for a CL charge more at certain times, that’s why the wise and well informed don’t take the “from” for granted, but communicate to confirm.😁

    TDA

Spot on. The prices are a guide only and like club sites have different price bands although on cl's I have only every come across two, Winter and Summer

They are the usual ones Harry, but a few we are familiar with have some special events rates as well, and occasionally want a minimum of two nights over such a period. It’s never bothered us, if we want to go to the event, we happily pay up. If we don’t, we go elsewhere. It’s never much more, might be a pound or two.
