Toilet tent on non-awning pitch
Hi,
I have a very short (4.26m) caravan that doesn’t have a toilet/shower. We went away a few weekends ago and used a small Porta Potti for midnight calls. I then put it in the small awning we have during the day.
I’d prefer to not have an awning (European van with door on wrong side, I want to be able to reverse in to the pitch and the door open to the car as I have a pull out table/camping kitchen in the boot of my car) and make use of non-awning pitches. However, I need somewhere to put the toilet during the day. My idea was a toilet tent as this doesn’t take up a large footprint.
Are toilet tents allowed to be used on non-awning pitches?
With the caravan being so short, it could easily fit behind the caravan so wouldn’t take anymore space up than say a longer caravan.
If not, I will just book awning pitches but it seems a shame to take these up and have unused space that someone else who wanted an awning pitch but couldn’t get one might have used.
Thanks in advance

A non-awning pitch is designated as such so that the fire gap between units can be maintained. If your toilet tent can be positioned behind your caravan (and still maintain the required fire gap in relation to any units pitched behind you) then, after a word with the site staff, you could perhaps be permitted to do as you describe but you must consult the site staff beforehand.
Tip: Don't use a torch inside the tent at night.

Thanks to the two above for the advice. To be honest, I’d rather not have the hassle of calling sites before I book, I quite like the idea of booking late availability which from experience (only once, mind you) pitches seem to disappear pretty quick!
It may be a case of just booking awning pitches. Although I did read a gentleman on these discussion boards have a grumble that awning pitches were being used by people without awnings, so hopefully I don’t upset anyone!
Also, thanks for the advice about the torch 😂

Hi
Best advice is.. book an awning pitch. Same price, more space , no staff possibly interpreting the rules differently. Forget about people grumbling on a forum, we're all members and all have the same choice / opportunity to book whatever pitch type you prefer.
Fun to watch those flimsy toilet tents waving about in the wind, especially with someone in it!!

AB, some folk will always find something to grumble about. I'm with JK, take no notice and book an awning pitch. There's usually a much wider choice of them as well.

The rules do imply that an awning pitch should be used,
(5. Using awnings or tents
a. On pitches with awning space you can erect an awning. You may also put up a tent for extra sleeping accommodation, or a specially designed toilet or cooking tent, provided the main outfit is occupied, but please keep them within your pitch area.)
However I would book an awning pitch anyway as there absolutely no requirement to use an awning.

AB, you could book an awning pitch, then when you arrive on site explain to the warden your situation and that you would prefer to use an non-awning pitch so as that those that really need an awning pitch can benefit.
