I asked this question on a site about my Isabella Shadow canopy as I was on a very large non awning grass pitch. I was told yes, but it would have to come down at night. I was a bit miffed as the footprint of our van and canopy was smaller than just the van alone of every van I could see on site. I was also in the region of 10+m away from the nearest other units, which either side of me were on awning pitches.
I'll put my neck on the block and admit I left the canopy up.

As always, it's down to the warden's discretion whether the rules can be bent to accommodate different situations.

If you were in a motorhome, the answer would be yes provided that the fire gap is be maintained at all times and the canopy would have to be removed at night. However, you say you're a caravanner so, in those circumstances the answer would be no as you wouldn't have room on the pitch for your car.

I would estimate my pitch was in the region of 200/240 m2.
Caravan footprint = 10m2
Isabella Shadow = 6m2
Car footprint = 9m2

With a caravan the answer would be a no,a motor caravan without a car in attendance ,May be allowed to use a canopy if the non awning pitch with the canopy extended does not compromise the fire break must must be normally be rolled in at night and if the motor caravan is not attended

The pitch is large [huge in this case], my footprint is small, the space around me substantial, I exceed firebreak distances and I've paid the same cost as those with an awning pitch.
I think it might be quite clear why this is one reason my site of choice is a CL.

I asked but they did not have one.

Perhaps an adjacent pitch marker had been removed by the warden?🤷🏻♂️

I'm puzzled by the requirement to roll in a Moho canopy at night. If its use is permitted in lieu of the car space, what difference does the time of day/night make? One doesn't have to move the car off pitch at night. Seems irrational to me. Am I missing something?

I’m puzzled by the whole non awning pitch thing itself. I have never come across them anywhere else. Has anyone found another site operator which has them?

So what am I missing, apart from "the rules"?

Tend to agree CY. Our wind out could only be deployed if there is sufficient clearance. It might only be possible to wind it partway. However if there is sufficient clearance, why can’t it be left in situe. However, they are the rules and you know what happens if you question the refs decision.😉 Plus we would wind it in at night anyway.😀

A non awning pitch would mean the fire break is compromised if one is erected, there is at times a concession for motor caravans to use a wind out canopy as long as there is persons in attendance when so used, at night ,that is not the case ,in that we should all know how quickly a fire can spread,

I am sure that wasn’t the wording in that reply from the club, in a thread I can’t find. I believe that said they could only be deployed if there was sufficient clearance and that might mean they could not be fully wound out. I don’t recall anything about persons being in attendance. If it is a caravan rather than a MH, what happens to the tow car at night. It’s still in the gap that a MH wind out awning would take up.

I can fully understand a flat no awning/no canopy rule if the pitch is small and the fire break rule cannot be met.In such a case I would not dream of arguing or putting up said awning or canopy as the rule is there for a very good reason.
What I cannot understand is the scenario I described earlier, ie massive pitch, small footprint, big gaps..

My recall is the same as yours, Steve. That's not to say others are incorrect but we're getting mixed messages from the club.

So no one so far has come across any other site operator with non awning pitches or rules about winding canopies in at night? Is that it?

It is sensible to wind in a canopy at night on two counts in my book:
a) They can flap about in the breeze and be a disturbance to sleep
b) If the wind gets up you could be in for a shock!
I always wind my in at night for the above reasons.

It’s about squeezing in pitches, and the Club having to live with existing spacing, after the fire spacing changes came in in the early 2000’s. As more Club Sites became hardstanding dependent, it removed the scope for being able to juggle the pitch markers around as was done on grass pitches. Also, the sheer size of outfits, and the awnings attached, ballooned in the late 1990’s to what has now become more the norm you see on Club Sites. (Like you, and eribamotters, we only have a small little caravan and motorhome, so look like a pea on a drum on most pitches😂)
Eribamotters, I have sympathy for your stand in terms of sizing, however, from a management point of view, no. If one is allowed to “get away” with it, others will cry foul, and it becomes a nightmare to manage. CL’s are much a better option, usually with a lot more space anyway.
Regarding non awning pitches and roll out canopies, (no sides, not pegged down) we have used our MH roll out canopy on non awning pitches without any comebacks, even leaving it out overnight occasionally if wind permits. Simply kept within the boundary of the HS pitch, no other vehicle in use.

Could it be the reason being that those who post on here, tend to only seems to complain if anything from this club is not suitable for their own personal needs or purseptions
Non awning pitches in most peoples perception would be just that. ,if wanting to use a canopy ,I would expect those people to inquire from the site staff, before accepting it as a right

The Club has all sorts of anomalies around using awnings, or not using awnings. They are not allowed at all I think on Old Hartley (pitches very close together, you have to drive through other outfits in some instances to pitch up). They are not allowed on the seafront pitches at Whitehouse Beach, probably for aesthetic reasons. You can put one up at St Agnes Beacon, but only the foolish don’t keep an eye on the weather up there, it’s not uncommon for them to rip away and head off over the cliff to America!😂
Might be other instances, it’s not something we fret over.🤷♀️
