Red pennant and corona virus

The club web site said that policies taken out from 17 March would not cover anything related to Covid 19. The implication being that policies taken out earlier would cover such claims. Our policy was taken out in January for travel in June. The policy wording says nothing about exclusions relating to virus related claims. I was subsequently told by club staff that all policies excluded claims relating to the disease irrespective of when they were taken out. I reluctantly accepted cancellation of the policy and a refund. To me this verges on sharp practice and an insurance industry seeking to avoid its responsibilities.

Taking this discussion a step further. Does anyone know if there are moves afoot to extend existing Red Pennant policies as a result of the travel bans? After all, they've been covering a non-existant risk for at least 10 months now and I resent having paid for something I cannot use.

I contacted the club and they refunded all my money, but my policy had not yet started, might be different if your policy was in force when all this kicked off undecided

Last year I had booked my ferry but and matters progressed I received an IOU. I had deferred taking out my Red Pennant until nearer the time of travel so I wasn't caught out by this problem. Given current uncertainties, I would imagine many will leave arranging various aspects of travel until much closer to that time.

Dont understand how some of this works, I took RP insurance via the club paid in full with a start date of 14th April 2020, day we were due to catch the ferry for overthere.

Before i was due to travel covid restrictions meant it would have been impossible to travel on the 14th April, i contacted club asked them to cancel the policy and requested refund which i received in full within the week. undecided

I bought (renewed) an annual policy in the window we had when it was possible to travel (early August). I had delayed renewing since May because there was no chance of using it. But the axe was brought down before we could travel. The 10 months refers to the time international travel had been banned in the last year.

I also understand that the "other" club has extended memberships to allow for the period when touring (even at home) wasn't possible, but no such concessions from CAMC that I know of.

Brittany Ferries has twice extended its Club Voyage memberships.

Just saying we're not seeing a lot of tangible goodwill from the club or RP on this.

Very much what we will do this year. Ferry booked but Brittany Ferries flexi. No sites booked. Will sort insurance once I am sure we are going / able to travel.

All comprehensive travel insurance starts from the day you take out the cover, as one of the sections relates to Cancellation cover so the insurer does have a potential liability in force and may have to pay out if you a serious accident the day after taking it out and cannot go away at all, just like car insurers have even if you don't take the car on the road, namely from Fire or Theft of the vehicle from your home.

However these small amounts of cover are fairly negligible compared to the main risks to the insurer.

We have an annual policy that I had to extend the cover for in February last year for a potential March trip. I paid to have the period of days cover extended and also for medical reasons. I was given a full refund from the day the Pandemic was officially announced by WHO, meaning I paid for 8 days cover.

Those that received a full refund were lucky but the club only acts as an agent for insurers in this matter so whoever the insurer was must have agreed those refunds.

I still had to pay for my annual travel policy through Nationwide as they also cover me for other things like Breakdonw cover, Mobile phone cover plus any UK based holidays I have. I'm prepared to let it ride this year. Any refund would be small beer.

Not sure this is true, when we took out RP travel and breakdown the club asked what date we were actually leaving the country, and said that the policy could start from that date as we would be covered in the UK by our normal AA breakdown service etc,

so when the proverbial hit the fan contacted the club to say i no longer needed the insurance, they said ok and gave me complete refund. Was not interested in claiming if we had to cxl thru sickness etc as only the ferry had been paid for which were flexi tickets with BF anyway so we would have been able to re-book at a later date.

Yes it is true Rufs. Believe me it is.

It relates to Cancellation due to an accident or medical reason.

I once had to deal with such a claim. A client of mine took out your normal Comprehensive travel insurance policy for a forthcoming trip to America and 2 days later broke his back in a  car accident. The Insurer reimbursed him the full cost of his having to cancel his holiday less a small excess.

If you took out such a policy and had a heart attack or something similar that prevented you from travelling then the same would apply to you. This cover starts from the day you take the policy out.

The breakdown cover that you referred to is true as I've had RP cover before but that is not what I am referring to when I say cover starts immediately.
