Some years ago when Folkestone Racecourse site was open ,it was quite regular for those coming off the tunnel or ferries to do an overnight and use the facilities ,then before the staff came on duty leaving without paying
Single couple Site staff on UK club sites without barriers ,will quite often have M/Cs come in and dump and fill, JK will not be aware that some M/C owners will be quite aware that sites as JK is on this year the staff will not be "on duty" for several hours during the day ,may even not be on site as allowed off site when not on duty

These people must have amazing planning abilities to be able to plot all their illicit stops during their trips.

Seems so ,and a big sign outside club sites helps, as some retired now wardens advised, another "method?"used if a site has barriers is/was "can we have a look round ,my wife or.partner cannot walk far would it be ok to drive round"
not often caravans need a dump/ fill

Unfortunately there are those who will always try and avoid paying. Not sure how they expect the services to continue, possibly they are not bothered. Many years ago we were tenting on a small municipal out of season. We had been there 3 days and not seen anyone. Arriving back early and going to the facilities found they were being cleaned, so nipped back, got some money and went to settle up. I mentioned to our neighbour, who was there before we arrived, that an attendant was on site if they wished to settle up and they were not best pleased. Over the years we have posted payment through the door, or visited the Mairie. Now a days it tends to be barriers and card payments.😀

Andy/Michelle, If time is on your side and you can take in the mountains on your way south you will find overnight opportunities which are neither campsites nor Aires - just free overnight stopovers for self contained motorhomes. This is the top of the Lautaret Pass just below the amazing Alpine garden.

When we were caravanners we used to get a late evening crossing to Calais then stop at a motorway Aire about one hour from Calais. Never had any problems with security but always chose full service aires with good lighting. The whole family always slept like logs and no need for detours off of the route. The only problem these days is lorries parking in the caravan/motorhome areas and taking all the space.
Now retired we always use sites and our first stop is just before Guignicourt, Au bord de l’Aisne, just before Rheims. Excellent site quite close to the autoroute but expensive unless it is still ACSI.

I remember the writers explaining that the way he spoke is to represent how we English sound to the French when trying to speak their language!!
I just try to get hello, please, thank you and goodbye right!

My French is near fluent but my spelling less so! Indeed, if you say “Reems” nobody will understand you. Failure to use the subjunctive when required is punishable by death. Apart from that it is a wonderful country to visit.

Hitchglitch in thirty plus years of travelling in France I cannot recall consciously employing the subjunctive,although perhaps I may have.Osmosis,due to swimming in the pool of the language is how I have gradually gained enough French to advance beyond the transactional phase.I was a victim of a 1960's grammar school,French teacher more interested in grammar than communication!The French enjoy correcting me and I am happy to indulge their sense of linguistic superiority.A smile,a memory for vocabulary and a willingness to learn goes a long way,I find.
Our son hated MFL at school but then he met a native Spanish speaking OH and she says that his spoken Spanish is now excellent-pillow talk being an incentive ?The Spanish also apparently use the subjunctive form to express their varying mood, or so he tells me😁.

Good post Ken. I had a head start in language too - with a progressive teacher who sent us to stay individually with families in France - and by pure luck I got a family with an 18 year old daughter. People still ask how I got a Bordeaux accent.

I jest of course. If you speak French in the villages the locals will go out of their way to accommodate and encourage you and will keep any criticism to themselves.
