Best route advice sought

Government restrictions permitting, I shall shortly be towing from Wharfedale CC Site to Buxton CC Site. Never travelled this way before and I'm seeking advice about the best route. My maps indicate M6 & A6 (or M61 & A6) but I don't see an exit for the A6 near Stockport. Any advice appreciated.

Hi, I would suggest Google maps, streetview and site info in handbook.

We've driven up through through the central areas with a motorhome but with a caravan in tow you might find it easier to rejoin the A1/M1 and head down to the Chesterfield junction and drive across to Buxton from there.

If you want to use the A6, there is a junction just after you go under it on the M60. The A5145 links back to it at a traffic light controlled junction.

I still like to use my A to Z Road Atlas for an initial look at a route as it gives a good overview. Then I drill down into the detail, usually via Google Earth with Street View being handy for looking at any awkward bits.

I was thinking more of the road gradients via some of the possible routes from the M6.

using Google maps would suggest leaving the M60 at Bredbury Jct25 before you get to Stockport. It's an odd ball bit of motorway around there ... I believe there were grandiose plans originally that didn't happen which is why you can join the motorway around there in the outside lane 🤷‍♂️

I must admit that I have used https://www.viamichelin.com/ for many years both in the UK and abroad. It allows you to customise your search using the options list to include caravan and you put in via points. To date it has not let me down.

I believe it uses NavTeq ? for its mapping which is the same as used by Garmin and as such the Avtex Tourer satnav.

Yes, it seems a good as route as any. Once your are on the A6 it is an easy drive to Buxton.

I am really grateful to all who have taken the trouble to reply to my query. Your thoughtful contributions are much appreciated and a great help with an unfamiliar route around & through such a large conurbation with a 7+ metre caravan in tow. Many thanks! I hope, like ourselves, you'll be able to make early, best use of the lifting of Covid restrictions. Carpe Diem.
