CAMC Insurance NCB warning

Just bit of a warning really... not meaning to upset anyone or provoke a massive conversation.

Having just sold my caravan to buy a motorhome after 12 years insuring it with the club and with no claims either I might add..  I have been advised that my 12yrs NCB cannot be transferred  over to my motorhome insurance which I feel extremely disappointed about and if I'm honest almost cheated...  So I have to start all over again..    Doesn't seem fair to me but there you go

Like I say , just thought it worth mentioning , in-case anybody else is thinking of doing similar..

Are you talking about NCD from your caravan policy or from insuring your car?

So you were hoping to transfer NCD from a caravan policy to a MH.

I'm not surprised that didn’t happen. Your caravan was not a motor vehicle and, essentially the caravan cover was for fire and theft as road going liability was covered by your motor insurer who gave you NCD based on road usage.

Also CAMC now provide 'cover' rather than insurance for caravans so you would not have had an insurance policy as such. There are technical differences which those who know more than I do can explain but it is another reason NCD is not transferable.

If the club offered car insurance, would you expect that your caravan NCD would transfer over to your car insurance?

It’s fairly obvious that you can’t transfer NCD from a non motor vehicle policy to a vehicle policy , but when we changed to a M/H and insured through the club they gave me an introductory 25% discount ,as we had had our caravan insured with them , but that was 5 years ago

    Disco 3

Welcome to motorhoming. When we changed from a caravan to a motorhome we hit a similar problem with NCB. Because we only ever had one other vehicle the motorhome becomes a second road vehicle (for us)  so we had to start building up NCB from scratch. However what we found with the Club was that they did offer us a discounted rate of insurance similar to having a NCB. The obvious difference was that should we have had a claim in the initial years we would not have had any NCB to call on at the next renewal which would have meant the premium would have gone up. I suspect even if you move away from the Club it will be a similar situation. Through the Club I am not paying massively more than I was for my caravan insurance. Obviously costs depend on type and price of the motorhome you are buying.

    Enjoy your motorhoming.

It is variable though. No discounted rate from the club and a premium of over £1200, plus still requiring an alarm and tracker to be fitted. We eventually insured with Comfort insurance for less than half that figure including UK and European breakdown, tracker and alarm still required though.

I seem to remember having to prove our NCD for our only car when we insured our motorhome, long time ago now, so can't remember exact details. But we did get a discount on motorhome policy. How much I can't recall but worth while. Not sure of the insurance company, quite possibly the other club.

Always worth a discussion, but I wouldn't expect to bring a discount from anything other than something motorised.

    Glad you've got it sort.

    Steve

Maybe I was lucky but I imagine it's more to do with the initial value of the motorhome. Not had a requirement to fit either an alarm or tracker although I have had VanBitz alarms fitted to both motorhomes. I know you have a German made motorhome so perhaps there is  extra costs built in for supply of spares should they be needed. This year when my renewal was due I tried both Comfort and the C&CC. A change I am making this year is to change the wheels from steel to alloys. For this the CMC have a 15% loading and although Comfort accept it without loading their price was very similar to the CMC so I carried on with the Club. The C&CC quote was silly money and that was before I mentioned alloy wheels!!!
