It was Mum and Dad’s first holiday down in Cornwall, so as we had a cottage in Penzance, weather was gorgeous, so we decided to go over to Scillies using the heavily discounted vouchers given at the time in The Cornishman. (I still occasionally read it online👍) So we all had tickets at £16 each to sail there and back. Absolute bargain to enjoy something different, relaxing for Mum and Dad, who were in late 70’s at the time, still able to walk a long way, so I knew we could take a good look around. Mill pond calm. I started turning green almost past Mousehole, it was a nightmare after that. Mum, Dad and Sister fine. So for me £8 to get there, £80 to fly back. Great value for the day, no idea how much it is now, but I would fly next time. It’s a very special place, want to go back and island hop, spend some time researching history, walking, discovering. We did get to have a lovely swim though, warm waters, crystal clear. Interesting being on St Mary after ship had gone, back to quiet tranquillity. Just shows the impact visitors can have in Summer, even the day trippers. Tresco Gardens on my list👍😁

I doubt I would feel good on that crossing ever☹️ I have done Greek island hopping, and lots of times on CalMac Ferries without any problems, but it was bad, made me very wary of any type of sea crossing. But I get ill in certain cars (Citroen’s 🤢), coaches, buses. Ended up in hospital with severe travel sickness a couple of years ago in our own MH🤷‍♀️, so it’s a lottery with me. Fine on trains so long as I can face forwards. Cycling seems ok so far🤔😁

careful what you wish for, when we stayed on Bryher we only booked bed and breakfast with the intention of island hoping and perhaps eating on a different island, however, the last ferry back to Bryher was 1800 hrs so we quickly had to change to BB&evening meal, however, there was so much food OH had to revert to asking for childrens portions.

We stayed at the Hell Bay hotel, and we still have hanging on a bedroom wall a painting of Hells Bay done by a local guy whilst we were there , think i will put on our list of places to re-visit, does it count as staycation or vacation?, either way I am sure we would totally enjoy it. laughing

It’s a definite possible for us. Even taking the pooch. It’s the flights and the travel getting to airport that pile on the ££s for us, but it could be something for a special trip. Train into London, sleeper to Penzance, sky bus to St Mary’s in a self catering option. Hop around on island day trips, the reverse travel back home. There wouldn’t be much change out of maybe £3000 for the pair of us for accommodation and travel, but it looks a nice option for something special, very relaxing as well, just have to do the travel link ups. Could save a good bit if we took MH down and left it at airport I suppose......

They act on requests DT, if you want a thread locking just post-‘perhaps it has run its course now and the mods may wish to lock it’ I’m not sure if all of us can use the magic words or just certain posters but it has worked recently👍🏻

Interesting news flash on the Beeb

"Summer holidays overseas are "extremely unlikely" because of the risk of travellers bringing coronavirus variants back to the UK, a scientist on a government advisory body has said.
The UK faces a "real risk" if people travel abroad, Dr Mike Tildesley said"

Sure glad i booked my month in Devon laughing

Price is the reason we were so late making our first trip to Scillies and when it was mentioned I always compared what we could do with the money, like two weeks in France.

If you fly in, assuming good weather, it is stunning and it’s certainly different from most other UK locations.

This was mentioned on another forum this morning and there may be other ‘experts’ with different views but I think the last paragraph of the report sums it up well.

”We know that universal, restriction-free travel is unlikely from 17 May but under a tiered system, based on risk, international travel can meaningfully restart and build up, with minimal restrictions in time."

Please can this thread be moved elsewhere? It quite clearly now has nothing to do with overseas sites and touring.

It does if you consider the Scottish Islands, Ireland and the Scillies to be overseas.  laughing

We could probably do it a lot cheaper, but that’s the whole point.😉 It’s somewhere we would like to go and spoil ourselves. I have flown out, and if you do it on a good day, sun shining, it’s unique. A whole different world right on our doorstep, much like the Scottish Isles, another experience that we have only tinkered with. I’d like to go before it gets totally changed by popularity. 😁

I think you may need to visit for the day again as a quick check just now shows virtually no availability for 2021!

Keeping fingers crossed that there may be some foreign travel, and think that come the school holidays there could be, as it’s likely that will be more availability than here.

It won’t be this year, but I did find something with a swimming pool doing a casual search, reasonable price as well.
We are down in Marazion in September🤞so will catch up with things down there, caring duties and ill health have meant we have missed a few years, so we are so pleased to be heading down again. Will even cope with crowds, although going for an event so expect to be in the midst of things at least for one day😁

Personally I doubt many summer holidays abroad in Europe this year

Sadly, I tend to agree, given the current vaccination rates.

So do I, that’s why my fingers are crossed!
However, like Christmas even if allowed it doesn’t mean that we necessarily will and booking up two two week rallies is looking a good decision.

We haven't seen the impact of schools re-opening on the figures yet. That and the current trend on the continent make travel overseas highly unlikely IMHO. As we are unlikely to properly monitor our borders, creep age of the continental trend may impact on our movements in the UK as well.

slightly off topic but as family we have

    1. daughter teacher in Sutton 1500 pupils no cases

    2. 2 children at school in Portsmouth approx 1k pupils no cases

    3. 1 child school in E.G, primary no cases

    4. 1 child 6th form college Winchester no cases

    5. daughter front line nurse Portsmouth no cases, also a vax nurse.

"As we are unlikely to properly monitor our borders, creep age of the continental trend may impact on our movements in the UK as well."

But this is a very good point, and if Germany and Spain strike some sort of deal to allow Germans to flood into Spain for Easter without any real border checks, and considering the state Germany is in at present, only 8% vaccinated and 33k new infections per day, I cant imagine the carnage that will ensue in the UK if we then allow UK nationals to flood into Spain on May the 17th yell, and lets not talk about France frown

    As posted yesterday, think this quote is a good, UK,  summation;

”We know that universal, restriction-free travel is unlikely from 17 May but under a tiered system, based on risk, international travel can meaningfully restart and build up, with minimal restrictions in time."
