I think you have been sniffing to many St Austell Brewery empty bottles.

Think there may be some back sliding on this, it would appear the German higher ups are not singing from the same hymn sheet, sounds like the UK, one minister is saying it is ok to travel another saying no it is not, what i find strange is they are going to let them travel to Spain, Spain will accept them providing they have a negative covid test, and one half of Spain are jumping with glee, whilst the other half are in lock down and unable to travel, and then after party partying in Spain they will be allowed entry into Germany without any checks and no SI, and to make matters worse i think only 2% of the German population have so far been vaccinated, I think Spain is slightly better but not much, my daughter in Spain was given an appointment for 31st of March which has now been cxld with no new date, she is a frontline teacher and Spain took the decision to vaccinate all front line teachers.

Not that i will be travelling overthere this year, but this has the potential to affect UK travel into Europe which will not happend until the 17th May as things stand, just sufficient time for a 3rd wave to run riot thru Europe.

I know quite a few locals with disparaging attitudes. We have only been here 47 years and nobody would regard me as local as I still have a Bristolian accent.😂 We very much like the area, although only moved here for the job in the mines.
Personally I don’t see how the two things relate.

I lived a while in the city, I tolerated it until I had the means to move to somewhere healthier & happier. If anyone tolerates anything it isn’t worth staying as you are selling yourself short. We get one life-live it👍🏻

That would be quite funny, if it were not so ridiculous.

If you think the only people that are 'disparaging' about a place are people who do not hale from there you are mistaken.

The people that I have heard being most critical, about St A, were born, bred and live in St Dennis but strangely, they never passed judgement on my right to make to comment as I was not a 'local'.

Where I choose to live, which is not St Austell, may have many things to recommend it, but that does not mean that I cannot mention things that are not wholly positive.

As for emojis, it is you that has suggested I use them.

I have no need, or desire to do so, and one reason is that I see too many posters seemingly attempt to disguise what their intention is by using emojis-give someone a hard time followed by a smiling emoji.

As for mis-remebering-ASDA was in Aylmer Square and the Coliseum was in St Austell.

Yup. When the fun and happiness falters, time to move........

This year has taught us not to grumble about where we live. It ain’t prefect, but it hasn’t been half bad either. Everywhere has its ups and downs, good and bad. 👍

I was born in London ,brought up in Surrey, then moved to  Sheffield  on job promotion ,for 6 years then back to where i am now on promotion again ,untill retirement  in Hertfordshire, and every where I have lived it tended to be "locals" who were more vocal about how good it would be if they could live elswhereundecided

A&J, this putting a spin on words isn't being fair to other posters and, as I intimated earlier, I'm not going to respond other than to say that, as for mis-remembering, I checked my facts before posting but you must believe what you will.

As you say unfair to others-they may even have dived in hoping to see some info on cost comparisons-so maybe best we tolerate, or ignore, as best we can the small number of posts that we don't agree with.

I would never presume to give an older person advice that is patronising, it was merely my take on things/experience. You misread my post but it’s no biggie👍🏻

I don't get this 'tolerating' where you live at all. I love my house and home, been here for 34 years now and it's where all the happy memories are. It (the home and gardens) has everything I want to keep me happy and equally I really like the area and it's location.

Yes I like going away far and wide but this is home in all senses of the word.

tolerate - allow the existence, occurrence, or practice of (something that one dislikes or disagrees with) without interference. I don't mean to judge but really is that how some see where the live?

Overseas holidays are starting on the 21st May - not all holiday destinations involve driving into Europe. Whether you think that, having had a second vaccination the risk is still too severe, is a personal decision. We have made the decision that it is not.

Hi David, Another comparison I have made, more in hope than expectation, is between Caribbean and European all inclusive resorts.

The main reason is that the thought of a 10 hour flight, mask on, is not that appealing however, as I suspected, having discussed this with 'travel advisors' , you get far more for your money in the Caribbean.

Looking at October its £2286 for a Greek 5 star AI, at an Ikos resort, and  the Dominican Republic is £1612 at, what  I am told is, a comparable hotel, both are top rated on Trip advisor and we have stayed at the DR hotel.

Did look at Tenerife, for some reason my wife wants to try it, I was told that there are really no directly comparable hotels-it was impossible, back in 2018, to find a hotel that would guarantee a walk in shower as most were still the 'over the bath' type!.

I have not made a comparison with a trip with the van, maybe Spain would still be OK weather wise, but if I went direct with BF the fare alone would be quite a chunk of the £1612 gone so likely to be far more, overall and while I am a whizz on the BBQ, and wash up, its not quite the same relaxing stress free holiday that the AI would be when the only decisions you have is which of the many restaurants shall we eat at, shall we go for drinks before we eat  and what wine shall we have.

Wow, some of you guys are extravagant !

We paid about £12 for a good clean room at the Maya hotel restaurant in Agra. Breakfast on their rooftop and then a bicycle rickshaw to the Taj Mahal.

Wow! How did you manage to take that picture of the Taj Mahal with so few tourists ambling around in the foreground? laughing

    "

Sometimes, dolphins are illegally captured and sold to parks around the world.

Many of the dolphins who are deemed less “attractive”—and, therefore, less profitable—are slaughtered during the capture process and sold as meat to unsuspecting consumers"

My pockets, unfortunately, are not deep enough to stop this trade in Dolphins, but i sure did have a great time off the coast of Indonesia doing a Dolphin survey way back in the late sixtieslaughing

We had a holiday in the DR a couple of years ago and it is without doubt the best AI we have had. The hotel, dining venues, beach, watersports ( at the time not sure now) were absolutely top notch. The only downside is it is nowhere near another resort ( by road) and even the hotel staff were shipped in by boat every morning. Having said that it was a fabulous holiday, especially if you like sailing, paddleboarding etc. As you say, value for money wise it far exceeds anything you can get in Europe.

Here's another quote from the same organisation.

"We at PETA very much love the animal companions who share our homes, but we believe that it would have been in the animals’ best interests if the institution of “pet keeping”—i.e., breeding animals to be kept and regarded as “pets”—never existed..........This selfish desire to possess animals and receive love from them causes immeasurable suffering, which results from manipulating their breeding, selling or giving them away casually, and depriving them of the opportunity to engage in their natural behavior. They are restricted to human homes, where they must obey commands and can only eat, drink, and even urinate when humans allow them to."

Make of it what you will.

PETA are considered on the extreme of campaigning for animals, and tend to be well known for their often explicit and shocking tactics, but nevertheless do serve a purpose in terms of educating about some of the suffering non human species endure at the hands of Man.
This is an informed study about why the exploitation of sea mammals isn’t good for them.

    https://www.humanesociety.org/sites/default/files/docs/case-against-marine-captivity.pdf

I could happily watch and swim with them in the open sea, but would rather roast in hell than do it in a tank with such intelligent captive creatures. 😢
