We have had a letter from Imperial College asking if we would partake in a trial as we have had our first jab, to take a home covid test before our next jab ,they are posting them to us ,.and will be collected by a courier for the return

Given that it is almost 6 months until we go in September, I think there is every chance the French will have their Covid at similar levels to ourselves. That being the case there is little difference in us going to the Provence or to Scotland. Last year when rates rose above a specific level the government advised against travel, which meant your insurance wasn’t valid and quarantine was required if you returned from them. If that was the case we wouldn’t go and if already there quarantine as required on return. I can’t see how such an approach puts anyone at any more risk than stopping here.

It maybe that we have "reality checks" on here that some find more difficult to contemplate.
I felt that the original price comparison quotes from the OP were out of date due to possible changes in the way we'll be travelling and the extra costs incurred for testing, insurance etc. It's all an unknown at present.
I hope people will be free to travel and enjoy their holidays.

The costs that I quoted were obtained minutes before posting, so those were accurate.
So far as the other costs that you mention-well as I did not mention them I had either not considered them OR would not contemplate a trip if such things were required.
Its the latter, covid tests and quarantine don't fit my idea of enjoyable travel, but I cant see mass travel taking place if such measures are required anyway.
I wont presume I know what you mean about reality checks but requests on this an other forums to clarify what people mean about comments of that nature have got no replies.
Once HMG say we can travel it will be for each of us to decide what that will look like for us personally.
Some will, it seems, be off straight away, others may never travel again like they did previously and most will be somewhere between these two positions.
As you say its to be hope that those who do travel once allowed enjoy their holidays, and come back safe.

fully agree, 6 months down the line and once the sun comes out, infection rates world wide could drop considerably, we might even consider getting on a plane to Spain, we have several options for family owned accomodation, just the thought of sitting in a metal box with 200 or so others that is not so inviting.

A&J that’s a little disingenuous🙁, you have been happy to follow & be part of the OT discussions, you/we start discussions you/we don’t own them🤷🏻♂️. No thread would survive longer than a few pages if the OT rule was strictly adhered to & the C&MC would need greater numbers of mods than 2 volunteers I am afraid.

Many threads drift from time to time before returning to the OP, Allan, and for all sorts of reasons. For example, I thought my original comments, relating to a different, cheaper, site just down the road from Pentewan, was adding some information to the thread but was promptly accused of "hijacking" a thread in which I had "no interest". So it can, indeed be easy then to wander off on a tangent!

It was meant, as was my reference to Fred Drift, as a light hearted response to, well thread drift, and was posted after attempting, without success, to move away from talk about the rights and wrongs of travel.

You really could do with using emojis, A&J, so you can demonstrate whether a comment is intended as humorous rather than sarcastic. Look at the difference the use of a smiley or two makes to the tone.

having had myself a long association with HM's Royal Navy, and proud to say, we still have ongoing interests with HM's Royal Navy, the thought of doing what you allude to fills me with horror,
even more than sitting in a metal box with 200 or so others, which i have also done on more occasions than i care to remember

Don't worry you will probably never see me on a cruise liner again, once was enough. I think I would hate a coach holiday even more - all that waiting around for the last old fogie to appear and get back on the coach, at least the liner wouldn't wait!

Funnily enough Mikey, much to my surprise I found myself on a coach tour holiday some ten years ago. It was a tour of NT properties around Kent and Sussex, and I really enjoyed it. Very relaxing being driven around, plenty of time to look around some beautiful places, we did two venues a day, with lunch bought at one of them. Hotel was very nice overnight, had lovely swimming pool, spa, food was lovely. And while my Sister and I were definitely the youngest on the coach (“are the Girls on yet😂”) we had a really nice time. It wasn’t cheap though, could have done a month overseas for same price as the five days we had. But I’d do a coach tour again like that one. But not in a pandemic, and not the Turkey and Tinsel stuff😂

I would definitely have taken the 5 days overseas. We have had a few 3-4 day short trips abroad, Paris, Rome, Florence and Malta spring to mind. The history, architecture and sights in those places is mind blowing. NT properties are OK for a couple of hours but not a holiday.

Nobody has any objection from you going, it's what you could well be bring back with you when you return. So go and just stay over there, as you are so keen of the continental countries. Simple.

Ah, we do those kind of holidays as well, Athens, Corinth, Crete etc...
Enjoy any kind of break, don’t limit our options, or destination. Touring by rail is on agenda, possible USA, Canada....

Its nothing to do with how much it costs, or how little. Its not about the roads or the sites. Its about the freedom of choice, oh and the weather
Some of the prices quoted on here are much different to ours. We have a tunnel booked for the begining of September cost £120, return in October £100. We have done the long ferry to Spain at £383 which included an outside large cabin. We don't penny pinch but I do look for value for money.
We don't pay for holiday insurance just the extension for extra days. We don't pay for breakdown as we have that through our bank. Green card free from car insurance company.
DK, I hope your cruise cost quote was only for 1 person, either that or its been a long time since you did a cruise😂 the cruises we have been looking at are more like £3500 pp for a 14 night cruise.
We have enjoyed our trips out in the UK but can't wait to get back to Europe.
