Vacation V Staycation Costs

I hope you are right A&J👍🏻. I’ve been passing my time following the experts like Dr John Campbell & colleaugues they are happy to confirm we’ll be ok in the UK but European travel they’re sceptical. I want to travel too, I miss it but I’m tempering my desire. I’m mixing issues as I know they are connected. However you are correct & I don’t want to introduce thread drift so I’ll leave it👍🏻

It is looking that way. On 12th March France had 25000 new cases. Even if that was the peak if suggests they are at least two months behind the UK plus also a pretty abysmal vaccination record. It is not looking good for 2021? Whilst I admire the optimism of those that seem convinced they will still get away this year there has to be a massive improvement in the situation before that becomes a reality?

Nothing secret about it....even Germany bucked the trend and went elsewhere along with Spain, Hungary etc...it was all over the press, even buying vaccine from Russia
But monsieur Macron is still in the running for best loved president
"New statistics revealed that half of all adults in the country would refuse the jab following scaremongering from French President Emmanuel Macron about the Astrazeneca vacine."
doesnt look as though the French are going to provide much incentive to encourage us to spend our pennies over there even if it is cheaper than over here

Not me, gave up on the idea for this year at least, a long time ago, but, we consider ourselves very fortunate that we have easy access to some very nice areas of coastline countryside , and a family Beach House within 10 mins of home, some are probably not as fortunate, so i can understand the reasoning for wanting to get away, but as you say "not in the middle of a pandemic with countries losing control of it"

One of the reasons that Germany (they advise) had a big increase in cases was that their schools had reopened ,
Watch the next couple of weeks in the UK ,if what has been seen in this area in the last week as testing? in schools has shown they are negative? so there is no need to take precautions( ie what social distancing?)

Indeed. Related to the facility opening thread as well. Some folks have difficult to understand priorities. Afraid holidays of any kind are not top priority in this household.
I don’t have issues with anyone going overseas this year. But I do with them coming back, and bringing back yet another round of lockdown and instability. If it could be guaranteed that everyone who ventures out of UK is made to quarantine (at their own expense) and it could be vigorously policed, then ‘bye, have a good time. But there’s as much chance of that as a day trip to the Moon.
I would put keeping our case rates in control on this island before anything. That way lies keeping our general population overall safer, our medical facilities from being overwhelmed, our still vulnerable from dying, and might keep our children in school and get some stability for our own businesses and industry. It’s patently obvious that there’s yet another wave of infection spreading across some European countries, for whatever reasons, but holding firm on overseas travel, anywhere, is the way to go. Much later in year hopefully for those desperate to head overseas, but Europe ain’t looking too good at the moment. We might have all on coping with any new variants as well. It’s hard, very hard for those who love overseas, but it’s about the wider community and our own country first for me.2 -
Strange and sad that some feel the need to criticise others for something that has not actually been mentioned-not aware of anyone saying a holiday was a priority.
Many would like to be able to but it’s simple, until we are allowed to and decide it’s safe for us, it ain’t happening for any of us but most don’t feel the need for constant negativity.

The fact is, A&J, that holidays are a priority for many. You only have to read the posts on this forum to realise that. Over the months people have stated they'll go come what may and without insurance in some cases. That certainly isn't giving holidays a low priority and I'm surprised you, unlike Meth, haven't realised there are skewed ideas around.

I agree with some of what your daughter has said the stock answer to any queries from many sources seems to be "because of covid restrictions?"
We live in a semi rural area with many open areas and country side ,but neither the LA nor CC can inspect areas (footpaths/public rights of way), that because of the large increase in use (admitted by both) have in places become quite badly worn and unsafe for some of those that they were "upgraded to assist?

Said the man who is currently lobbying his MP about re opening the bogs on Club Sites🤷♀️
In fairness A&J, your thread is about a comparison of costs in terms of staying here, or venturing abroad, and has strayed as threads like this do. I wasn’t implying individual criticism of anyone, just putting my own priorities out there. We all want to get away, home country or abroad, and the vast majority of us will do it when we feel it’s safe, but it might need some compromise for a long time yet. I worry about what travellers abroad might fetch home, much like my friends in holiday hotspots here might have to endure later in year.Lifting the lockdown isn’t about being safe, it’s about the NHS being able to cope. It’s up to individuals to look after their own safety, and make the right decisions. Just cross lots of body parts it works this time🤞😁

I think you presume that as soon as able I will be off like a shot galavanting around Europe caution thrown to the wind.
So how would you suggest that I can ensure I am safe for others other than the precautions that are now part of our life and, for me at least, will not be relaxed for the foreseeable?

I don’t think I am fearful. I just put more than myself top of my list that’s all. And I say that having almost lost a beloved family member to something unrelated to Covid, we grab each day as it comes now, having had 18 months of wondering if our lives would ever be the same again. Many like us. Not wanting to tour overseas isn’t a fear, it’s a choice, for lots of different reasons. So implying cowardice might be construed by some as distasteful, unless you know the full circumstances. We merely don’t want to drag our dog overseas, that’s all. Nothing to do with Covid, or we would have crossed the Channel years ago.
I’ll admit to being angry at times with those I see doing things that aren’t helping the situation, but that’s just human nature when living alongside the ignorant, ill educated and totally selfish. Conversely, I am also very happy when I see youngsters enjoying them selves back in school playgrounds, when I talk to excited business owners looking forwards to re opening, when I think I can take my Mum to see her SIL. Nothing more sinister going on here😁

Whilst we are very unlikely to venture abroad with the van this year I would say it is very likely we will fly. Cyprus (one of our probable destinations) only had 12 new cases on Friday so hardly a hotbed of infection.
We do believe that once we've had our second vaccination, we are as probably safe as we will be for the foreseeable future so we need to get on with life.
Soon after we get the go ahead from Boris we are off in the caravan to an area where the risk of Covid is greater than Cyprus but sod it! . Watch out Tinners we'll soon be with you!

That's interesting as I have friends who are dual nationals of an EU country and they have decided it's too expensive to consider a visit to their other home. The costs of self testing, quarantining etc have bumped up the prices. They are going to wait till things improve and costs come down.
I don't know how the costs for van travel will pan out but I think there might be additional costs to factor in now that Covid has become endemic. We will have to wait and see.

I will indeed watch out because, vaccinated or not, you and other visitors could still be transmitting the disease.
It's my guess we will see another spike in numbers after Easter and into summer. The visitors are already here.

So are you suggesting that everyone should stay in their own village/town/county/country ( delete as appropriate) for the new few years until the pandemic is finally defeated, if it ever will be.
I can't see the CAMC or any hospitality venue, surviving if everyone took that view.

last data I saw 10th March was around 430 daily new cases and increasing rates since 18th Feb ad still rising.
The independent yesterday: "Cyprus on Friday put the brakes on a wider loosening of COVID-19 restrictions by keeping middle school students at home for two more weeks as the infection rate remains high, largely due to the spread of the U.K. variant.
Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou told reporters that results from samples sent to Europe’s disease prevention and control center indicate that over a quarter of coronavirus infections in Cyprus are attributed to that faster-spreading variant."0 -
I will be very surprised if any quarantining or covid tests will be required for Cyprus as the Greek PM recently stated in an interview with the one of our reporters that they would not need it. Grant Shapps has already said that they are looking in to "Covid passports"
I don't think the cost of van travel will affect us as we won't be taking it on the plane.
