Pet Passport Scheme ends for UK

Had a conversation with our VET the other day about AHC for France in August. I know this is of interest to members and our VET admits it may not be correct.
1 Consecutive rabies boosters will be OK - no need for another blood test.
2 All the sheets (10) need to be completed but only the certificate needs to be with the animal and must be in the language of the country of entry? Detail must be on file with the VET.
3 Re entry into the UK will still require inoculation for tapeworm a French vet to administer prior to returning to the UK. Not sure how that's documented at present. Possibly a stamp on the certificate.
4 A statement from the 'owner' that the animal is not being imported for commercial reasons.
Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks
Chris

CRF. Your second point....you need to tell your vet whether you will be landing in Netherlands or France or Spain (or anywhere else) so that the vet can complete the correct format of Animal Health Certificate for you - the forms are pre printed in format of English with Dutch translation alongside, or with French or Spanish translation alongside as appropriate. The vet needs to use the correct one dependant on where you will be landing.
On another forum someone reported a vet quoting £165 to complete the certificate - which is valid for just one journey.

pretty much in line with what our vet told us, its just the £100+ that irks for what amounts to nothing more than a quick feel round the dog to ensure all ok and fill in the form, concur re rabies, ours has had the blood tests etc and the booster is every 2 years, if you are going anywhere near Spain Leishmania is another jab you might like to consider. Leishmania is rife in Spain and it is a killer, another £100+

another reason why going overthere is rapidly dropping down my list of places to go, if i wasnt still holding 2x BF flexi tickets and if we didnt look forward to some early warmth and sun April thru June to help OH's raynaud's syndrome it would def be off the list, might be cheaper to buy more hand warmers and more thermal socks and what about my bacon still if you overnight at Poole Port there is a great cafe opens at 0600 hrs which does some cracking bacon sanies

When problems first arose for Scottish Fishermen in January this year, the owner of one small business complained about the 'killer' financial impact of having an AHC for each and every type of animal product exported, making his exporting unviable. The price he quoted for the AHC was £150, so the Vet's quote of £165 sound about right, as does 'the valid for just one journey'.

Going back many years it was most unusual to see a UK outfit with dogs, or cats come to that. As the rule relaxed, or perhaps became easier, the number grew steadily. I am not sure what people did with their pets all those years ago, kennels/relatives, but we may be heading back that way? The Government seems to be turning a deaf ear to all problems Brexit related so I don't see any resolution, at least in the short term, from that direction?

I will not be going to France again. I can live with the new rabies requirements, don't like it, but it is what it is. It is the fact that you can not take dog food. What is my dog supposed to eat? An instant change to his diet can cause many problems. As I don't want a sick and miserable dog. We will be staying in the UK..

There seems to be an adequate supply of good quality dog food in. France for the 7.6 million dogs living and thriving there. Supermarkets and garden centres are well stocked with well known brands.

I am not sure that is really the point. Although I am not a dog owner I know my son's dogs require a careful diet otherwise it upsets them The trouble with dogs is that they will generally eat anything but have no perception of the possible consequences!!! The last thing you need in the confines of a caravan or a motorhome is a dog with an upset tummy!!!! Often a holiday is not long enough to get them to adjust to new foods, would be different if you were going to live in France.

There's been a run on certain types of dog food here, according to Sainsburys, I think pet owners always feel better when they have everything organised for travel regarding pets. I wouldn't want to be hunting round a supermarket deciphering labels on pet food, it can be bad enough on other products! Some seem to enjoy supermarket shopping as soon as they set foot over the channel but personally that would ruin the start of my holiday...

David, we get fresh fish from Dorset here so anything in a supermarket isn't quite as good...but I digress.
We had thought about going to Brittany just before Covid struck. I think if we do go the new dog will stay behind with relatives, I think it will be easier although only for shorter trips.

not a problem here, Morrison have a more than decent wet fish counter or you can get fresh sea bass, crab etc straight off the boat at the Old Portsmouth Fishmarket , you can even catch sea bass & good mackrel off the beach locally, that said we do enjoying shopping in the Spanish Markets, .
Dont see buying sufficient provisions at a French supermarket to get us into Spain a problem, if we decide to go next year, and pooch not really a fussy eater, but right now we are not buying French produce, our own little protest

That'll be because Morrisons catch their own 😄

Good for Morrison’s👍We have often seen the Falfish vans out and about when down in Penzance, we have never had a problem getting nice fish and lots of choice when down there.👏👏👏

Absolutely, and this guy if i am not mistaken was on the TV program Cornish Fishermen quite recently. Trying to shop and buy local just now something we have been doing during worst of Covid and hope to continue, as i said, we do like to shop in Spain but food is just as good in the UK if you know where to buy, it is just that in countries where the temps are quite high and you can sit outside until late eating etc, everything just seems to be that little bit better.
I would not use pooch as an excuse for not traveling in Europe, and we will probably venture overthere next year, but the tick list and added expense is something we are now more aware of, no longer a pack up today and go tomorrow holiday

Does the Co-op still own farms, David? I ask because some years back they were selling them. A farmer friend of mine bought one and went from employee to owner.
To produce their own makes sense to me whether it be milk, cabbages or fish.

Ah, Farmcare. Thanks.
I think they must have sold in stages as it was long before 2014 that my mate bought his.

Sold in 2014.
Morrison’s do own a meat transportation company, and abattoirs. They also have Chippindales, which is a free range egg packing business up near Knaresborough. Morrison’s are big around us up here in Yorkshire, and I have to say have long had the best supermarket fish counters. We like the good instore bakeries as well. Can’t comment on the meat, as we don’t eat it, but it’s a supermarket we like. Better fresh foods, specialist counters than Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s.0
