Thinking of buying a caravan

Hi everyone, I’ve always wanted to have a van but it never worked out for many reasons. I’m a female of 61 with 2 dogs and would like to get one but I’m scared that it all might be too technical for me.  I think this is the time as I don’t see me going fat in lockdown. My question is would it be difficult or could I learn most of what I need on one of the courses and a good guide.

thanks for listening, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Andrea

Hi Andrea, My hubby and I were new to caravanning and he went on one of the CMHC courses before we bought he van to learn how to tow and everything else technical. h found it excellent and recommended to another friend thinking of buying a caravan who also went on the course and provided positive feedback. If you are nervous book a course and see how you feel afterward. We have a dog and find caravanning with the dog is great fun, people on sites are friendly and always willing to help a newbie. your confidence will grow as you go out on more trips. its a great hobby to have.

The CAMC courses have really good reviews, so it seems a good idea to me.  When the dealers are open, go and have a good look around to see if there is anything that makes your fancy.   Hope you manage to get the caravan, in the end.  Do let us know how you get on.

I would endorse AD's comments above especially about the mover as you will be on your own.  There is really nothing technical or complex about our hobby and anyway if you have any problem on a site there will always be people willing to give you a hand.  When you start just take it easy, towing is quite straight forward.

Go for it and have fun.

As well as these excellent courses, and the (sometimes) helpfull dealers there are probably some of your neighbours who are identifiable as caravanners by having one parked in their drive.  You could ask some of them if they would show you around their caravan. Only problem might be getting away again!

    Well done Andrea.

The advise that you have been given is all good, especially talking to neighbours who are caravanners. I'm sure that they will assist in hitching up, but with the mover, you won't need any help, after your 1st trip.In fact you will be proud to do it on your own! Your pitching will be easy especially if there are others on site or C & MH wardens. A shout for assistance will be all you need to do, even on continental sites. The use of an electric drill makes lowering and raising the steadies a doddle.Do not be afraid to venture abroad in the summer, especially when you retire, as a complete summer abroad, say from May to September will open a whole new vista for you. It's all an exciting venture, and if you don't take to it, you can always flog the caravan and try something else.
