UK staycation boom predicted

Same as us A&J, it’s a lovely place out of season. We like to use train round bay from Lelant if we go in. One of our favourite days is to pick up a pasty in SI, then drive the Peninsula right down to Sennen, then right along the bottom back to Mousehole. It still fabulous on a wet day, but we usually do a walk on a nice day, like the one from Zennor car park to Head, then along cliff path and back somehow or other😁 one of our favourite swimming beach’s is Portheras Cove, but it has to be an incoming tide, got a bad riptide at times. We have a few park up spots in mind for September on this route to watch Tour of Britain head over and down into St Ives, should be quite a spectacle. If indication of likely crowds is anything to go by for this, last time we watched on Dartmoor, a quarter of a million folks hit the Moor near Haytor for the finish. We walked in from deeper on moor, and couldn’t believe what we saw as we climbed over brow of Tor, people everywhere. Great atmosphere though, and when we drove past next day, it was deserted again, all litter had been picked up, very little sign of an event. Looking forward to it, a bit of normality after last year😁

I have had several life threatening physical events that ended well and also cancer. Each reminds you that life is for living. My wife died with oesophageal cancer that lead to liver cancer just before her 43rd birthday and all are wakeup calls

Some very timely posts for us.
Staying at home this year was decided on a week or so ago but that was with the van as our holiday buddies do not want to venture abroad this year.Yesterday brought good news on the medical front for my wife, confirmed by letter today, after her 12th medical related appointment since January 1st.
On reading the letter she said “when are we going away” and we have decided that as soon as we are allowed and we feel comfortable we are off to somewhere warm.

Well after watching Prof Van Tam/Mat H tonight on the 1700 hrs update, things are not as rosy as one would imagine, and they were begging people to "stay at home and save lives", if any of us are to have a holiday of any sorts we should heed his warning, but i have to say that after seeing our beach side car park full to the gunnels today it would appear all the warnings are falling on deaf ears.

Yes, Rufs, JVT was definitely playing the realism card but I fear some will never heed the warnings and always seek to break the rules.☹️

Went to Charlestown today to see how they’re getting on repairing the harbour wall. Lovely settled, sunny day and the place was like high summer. The place is very trendy these days (getting ruined like Padstow) and overrun with second homes - many of the holiday cottages by the harbour were occupied by late afternoon seemingly for the weekend. Forget April, for some who should know better, the lockdown is over and done!

Had my first brush with the ‘big C’ recently. Over Xmas noticed a suspicious looking skin lesion. Despite Covid, got to see a NHS specialist within a few days followed a few weeks later with surgical excision. Recently got the histology results back, turns out it was a localised skin cancer, thankfully now completely removed. It’s lots of factor 50 for me from now on!

I can spot them a mile off, cottages I know are normally empty and many of these folks just don’t look and act like locals.

I was left wondering today. On my way up to tip to dispose of a full load, passed a parked up police car at one of our main route roundabouts. Didn’t think much of it, as I get regular police updates about what they are doing in community, and know they are heightening the watching campaign. However, half a mile further on, I passed a large MH heading down to the roundabout, two people in cab. I bet the police car at least twitched if it didn’t actually stop the MH. First one I have seen out on road in months around here. 🙂

Although the MH journey may have been absolutely legitimate, TDA, let's hope the police checked the keeper's address via ANPR even if they didn't pull the van over.
I'm very much getting the sense that people are dropping their guard and thinking the rules don’t matter any more.😕

I think we see MHs out and about most days we travel down the A9, we have taken ours out at least once a month without any problems.
I don't think the police up here are the least bit interested to be honest, that's if you see a police car these days.
There is certainly more traffic on the roads in the last week.

Yes, my thought was that it was probably returning from a service check, as it was heading away from direction of two local dealers. I wondered more about the reaction of the police man. Haven’t seen any police vehicles actually out and about much at all.
We went for a bike ride today, stayed local, but the traffic was horrendous. We crossed over M1 and M18 and both were very busy.0 -
Driving a MH is certainly a good way of attracting attention.
The things we're now seeing and hearing don't auger well as it seems the staycation has already started😟.

We decided not to take ours out at all, as I said, there aren’t many seen out and about round here, and whilst police might be ok after checking plates, I wouldn’t trust some of the local population not to jump to the wrong conclusion. It’s safe, charged up fine, hopefully we can have the odd day a bit further afield in a few weeks time. Some nice places to spend a day not too far away.😁

Same here. All ours has done since Nov is to go to the local garage less than a mile away for brake adjustment. Taking it to for an essential shopping trip wouldn't give it a decent run and would invite unwanted attention.
Yep, roll on the day.

Having also watched that, totally agree, JVT and MH were absolutely right, it looks like infection rates are going up in some areas, and people should carry on sticking to the rules. We have come so far, it's nearly a year now since the first lockdown; if anybody had told me then that a year from then we'd be in lockdown (again, for the 3rd time) I'd have been seriously depressed. But we're here now, and have come this far; vaccinations are going really well, but we're not there yet; if we're to have any sort of summer holidays it's got to be worth it to keep to the rules for just a couple or so more months, it's in all our interests.

I’ve done some research for you DT, there ya go-

In some places, I don't think it ever stopped TW. Drive around here at night and look at all the lights on in the statics on the holiday parks. What you do is let your house - avoiding paying council tax and generate an income and then move into your static pleading you have nowhere else to live. As long as you 'keep a low profile' the site owners aren't bothered. They all descend on the beach around lunchtime, when they've surfaced. You can spot them a mile off.

Some accommodation has been kept open for key workers, if you're a key worker on a hospital night shift you might well be seen out having a break during the day. Static site owners etc were seen to be offering their accommodation to help out. Also to individuals with no permanent accommodation.
We have taken our motirhome out for MOT, servicing and a repair. It's a vehicle and could be dangerous if not kept in safe condition. I've only seen one similar vehicle out, a neighbour doing the same thing.
A pity to hear about people not complying with the Covid rules but we'll have to get used to more movement, especially when the schools go back.
I'm hoping the holiday dates will go ahead, our first planned break is a quiet spot on the South Devon coast, the site was closed last year so good to see it re-opening.

Hi tda, will give your bike ride parameters a miss-nearest roundabout is 14 miles, nearest Motorway 74 miles!
Travelled to Swansea in the week and it was noticeably quiet with no heavy traffic anywhere.
However, back home and it appears that people are arriving at second/holiday homes in the village.
Just before Christmas one of the cottage management companies removed all the keys from keysafes to prevent access however many were still occupied by the owners who, it seems, think travelling hundreds of miles in your Porsche and having a Sainsburys delivery won’t be noticed.Apparently a common reply when challenged was that when they travelled down it was legal, but when this changed they had to stay!

I think you're right, R&R. Our local static site has locked the entrance barriers but a terrific number of cars are parked outside the site. I've no doubt I'd see lights in the vans if I was to go there at night.

This was just 1 of our local beach car parks yesterday, "Staycation" has started, not visible, but there is a police car parked on the slip way to the sailing club, the policeman on duty in the car lives 3 doors from us, he said they have now given up trying to police lock down, however, as can be seen the beach was relatively empty, most of cars are either old folk who are sat on the benches or mums with kids who are in the play park.
for clarity walked pooch to get these pictures part of my daily exercise, and today, glorious, we will be having lunch down the BH, i will cycle and OH will walk with pooch, we will not be staying overnight Phew!!!

Our static site owner is playing by the rules, just as he should. No one allowed to stay or even visit, not for any reason. He says he would lose his licence. Posts photos of grass cutting and spring emerging, and them getting ready to open on the 12th. Maybe a few others should worry about their licence. Too many rule breakers, sad that some are so selfish.

Our LA who when asked to look at any problems have the latest stock answer to not doing."Sorry because of covid restrictions we are unable to carry out inspections" and it is semi rural where we live
So it may well be the reason in a lot of areas that some can flout the rules knowing no one is likely to check

Well after driving coaches in Scotland for a couple of years, i would have thought the first place to start spending money would be on the road infrastructure, great to provide extra campsites and aires type facilities, but not a lot of good if you cannot get to them because the road infrastructure is so poor.

Ours are exactly the same, Debs, will welcome us back on April 12 but not before. The only folk who have been allowed to stay on site are the full timers. Normally they have to vacate in February when the site is closed but have been allowed to stay this year. We're quite content to wait and will certainly make up for lost time later this year, assuming all goes to plan!
