Its not just the SW of England that's likely to be inundated with staycationers. Here in Scotland all the usual places are getting braced for the influx. I was supposed to go to Orkney last midsummer and that booking has been rolled over to this. Fingers crossed it is possible. Also last year I was going to go to the OH on the way up to Orkney or on the way back. Cancelled that too as there were too many vans there. Now wish I hadn't as one of the cousins I was going to see died of Covid last week. This year if I go nowhere else I will go to Lewis.

Seems rather strange that people will post about showing solidarity with UK business, staying local etc yet seem to want that to be anywhere other than where they live.
Any views that seem to suggest that people are not welcome will not be coming from people who see their livelihoods being affected, be they business owners or the thousands that depend on their earnings form tourism to keep them just surviving.
As for being able to identify people who do not live locally, its sounding like an episode of Catchphrase, and mention of the police is funny as I doubt they would view the sort of comments that have been made as coming from 'a reliable witness'.
Anyway, I am off now to check on the cheel.

I cant give you figures PD but last summer, post July 4th, we had one or two people down here with apparently no impact on the Covid statistics and only last week this was commented on during a discussion on what lay ahead for 2021.

Yes I agree the Mendips are lovely and get missed out. The downside at the moment, Cheddar is continuing to attract boy racers, to such an extent that the lovely road through the gorge may have to be closed. I hope this doesn't happen, a big problem for the NT and local council.
Ebor Gorge is a nice place too. Such ancient spots to explore. Amazing to think how long the area has been occupied!

Hope you get there this year, sorry to hear about your cousin. We normally try to get up to Orkney, I love it there and we've got friends there too, I'm longing for a good catch up! But yes I think it will be busy. Westray beckons but it will have to wait.

I don’t think anybody has posted such comments. The context initially was about spotting people breaking the lockdown rules with a few wry comments about how to spot visitors. I don’t think anybody who lives in a holiday spot would deny the importance of the tourist trade locally, so they are always welcome or at least, their money is. You will know that the ‘staycation’ boom is a two edged sword!

They have also said that the crowded beaches had no impact on ifections either. Nevertheless I agree with what "Which" advises and won't be going anywhere near the hot spots in peak season or making bookings that cannot be altered easily.

Yorkshire is always busy, especially in Summer. Dales usually worst for crowds, then East Coast. Bit better on NYMoors so long and you avoid Goathland and Whitby area. A touch quieter East Yorks away from coast.

Following Assembly briefing today it may be a tad early to book sites in Wales. However it looks like "self contained accommodation" may open by Easter. That could be M/H and Caravans with en -suite facilities and perhaps like previous with facility blocks closed. Fingers crossed we are moving out of lockdown.

Well, a short dip into South Somerset has blown me away. Might need another fortnight going home. Found some very promising CLs as well, a good mix of all the sorts of stop overs we love. 😁

I am not sure that the boom will see much difference locally, Cornwall, as the places that are likely to be busy will have been so anyway, in peak holiday times.
But, maybe, it will persuade, those that can, to holiday at different times and spread the load which will benefit everyone.
We are booked to be on ‘staycation’ in June and September, on club rallies, and will leave the August angst to others.

A few well placed severe humps would go a long way to curtailing the antics of the boy racers. There’s no reason why anybody needs to travel the gorge at more than 10mph and tearing off those big exhaust pipes is expensive!

We only had two site stays last year but on both the facility blocks were open.
We felt totally comfortable with the arrangements, especially at the larger site, and have booked again for this year.
We don’t expect, or want, to be all touchy feely with our site neighbours but having to be ‘self contained’ suggests arriving on site, staying in the van, having no interactions, then going home and that does not appeal.

We are so, so lucky to live where we do so for me a staycation could mean not even leaving home!
Feeling as lucky as we do we are more than happy to see people visiting, and enjoying, our lovely county and of course those visitors provide a living for many local people.
So far as the effect on locals, most have coping strategies, for the peak periods, anyway-from going away somewhere exotic, like Cheshire, to knowing how to get to Penzance without going via Hayle.
Avoid the supermarkets on Saturday afternoons or Sundays and don't go anywhere that will require you to park when its raining-because everyone else will have had the same idea!
We have been out quite a bit, due to a lot of medical appointments, and it really hits home that you cant do anything, so cant wait to just sit and have a pint or a meal and I can assure you the places that provide that wont survive on my trade alone so................come on down!

We have toured length and breadth of UK, never received anything other than a very warm welcome anywhere, you just give the respect and understanding to others that you would hope to be given in your home area😁
There are some lovely little shortcuts to get to places in hotspots if you search them out. And turn off the Sat Nav👍We used to do Bodinnick to Lydford (Dartmoor) twice a week when holidaying on River Fowey. Peach of a traffic buster over bridge at Gunnislake, straight up hill, bypass the twists and turns at Gulworthy and down to Tavistock. Not for big vehicles though, and you need to know where the cross roads are....😂1 -

I don’t see it like that Dave, but certainly not the intention. The perennial popularity of the SW speaks to all it has to offer which includes a warm welcome from locals who are generally very welcoming to visitors, but do like to poke a bit of innocent fun at the antics of some of them now and then.
Come and see us, you won’t be disappointed by the welcome, but maybe the crowds 🥴

With a bit of luck the entire 2021 school holidays will be cancelled. All the little darlings can recover from their mental problems at school stay with their friends and catch up with their learning leaving their parents to get back to work recover from all the home schooling and us oldies to enjoy the spring, summer and autumn unmolested. 👍😄
