UK staycation boom predicted

Regardless of Covid and the rules and laws affecting the general public many many things need to continue. For example critical services need to continue, locally, county wide, and country wide, also internationally. The same applies to international diplomacy in all it's forms. The need for the G7 to take place is not something that can be binned. Carbis Bay, Cornwall and the UK should embrace the opportunity. It won't return for many years.

Yes, absolutely. My previous supportive comments seem to have disappeared, but it’s a great opportunity for Cornwall. Definitely an opportunity and something to be embraced. Much easier to manage from a safety perspective than hordes of tourists.

The G7 will be a nightmare for those holidaying in West Penwith while it is on. The security will be immense and much of the area around Carbis Bay will be a no go area.
This brings me on to what will be your strategy for avoiding the crowds this summer assuming we can get about in the not too distant future. I will certainly be avoiding peak times and even outside these times I will be looking to stay at the less popular sites i.e. low or no facility sites away from the hot spots. Just to be able to have a change of scenery would be good.

3 days minor disruption for some tourists -v- opportunity to promote an area with much to offer on the world stage? ...hmmm, let me think about that one.

So we won't be able to do one of our favourite walks then, from Lelant along Porth Kidney Sands and on to St Ives via Carbis Bay then? That's a shame!
If and when we can get away our tactics won't be all that much different from normal - coastal and hill walking away from the crowds and maybe the occasional meal out at places we know are taking appropriate precautions. Probably more time than usual down in Cornwall as we won't be going abroad anywhere and hopefully the two cottage breaks we have carried over from last year will go ahead.

I expect to see some wonderful seagull mugging videos🤣
It might shut off a small area of West Penwith, for a few days. Sunday 5th September might be only one day, but will impact a lot more folks.😉 Assuming it doesn’t get cancelled of course.

It won't disrupt us, Bill, but I think your "3 days of minor disruption" may be a tad optimistic! Given all the preparations and aftermath I'm guessing it'll possibly be more like a fortnight. Fortunately, Cornwall is a big place so plenty of opportunities to enjoy it elsewhere. We will probably spend a bit more time than usual down on the south coast!

Hi Tda, The G7 is in mid June so whilst it may be busyish it won’t be August peak school holiday busy so apart from the attraction to the ‘media chasers’ might not be too bad.
We will be setting up on a rally elsewhere, fingers crossed, so don’t think we will be affected!

In normal times we avoid school holidays, not because we don't like seeing families enjoying themselves but most sites are just too busy for us, particularly in our part of the uk, the ever popular SW.
Our nearest coast is the Lyme Regis to West Bay area and it's very difficult to squeeze in there too, even for a few hours visit, parking is horrendous.
So we haven't plannned anything after June this year, we might touch down in Cornwall (if we can) after the Easter hols just to do a bit of cliff top walking...maybe we'll bump into Moulesy round St Agnes?!
I'm keeping an eye open for THS and rallies, much prefer some of the locations.

We normally holiday in West Penwith late June, early July. Avoid St Ives to be honest, it’s always swarming, particularly on a wet day. Same as other places in the rain. 😁 I sometimes go in early morning, grab a coffee and a croissant, then have a quick fly to some of my favourite shops, usually out again by 10.30am. OH won’t go in at all.
We have a week booked September, but near Marazion. Will add to that initial week later in year, see how things work out. Sea is warmer in September👍0 -
A lot of sites, hotels, resorts overall had a very lean year in 2020 with the prospect, maybe, of a repeat performance in 2021. Quite a few of them are facing financial ruin so guaranteed block bookings on that scale will be a very welcome boost and help them survive these hard times.

It will, indeed, and I imagine the accommodation needed for the press alone will be of the scale Ruffs described.

We will be down there as soon as the starting pistol fires, brue. You've just got me thinking of one of those giant pasties from the St Agnes bakery!

Yes, as long as they’re not the variety that rent from a second home owner based in Kensington and bring their entire grocery requirements with them purchased from Aldi in Milton Keynes! They’re net contribution is congestion and annoyance. All others very welcome! 🙂

It does look as though pitches will be hard to come by once we're out and about again. Making last minute plans last summer was tricky and time consuming. I thought C&CC's idea of posting where there was availability was an excellent idea, rather than having to endlessly trawl through sites looking for pitches. I don't think this club did that, maybe they could consider it?

If you use the cc late availability site it will give you pitch availability (when sites open again?) for the following three weekends, and if there is availability over the weekend then it is almost guaranteed that (apart from the honey pot sites?)weekdays for the following week will have pitches

I'm certain the CAMC do a late availability under the UK Holiday, Club site section when they are open. The only reason I'm not giving you chapter and verse Paul is because I don't use club sites that often and almost never on a late availability basis. I tend to pick an area and then find a site, usually a CL.

CAMC show late availability for weekends three weeks in advance. If you tap the date required on a particular site booking page it will show if there are less than five pitches available. So different systems for both clubs and helpful as long as the web sites are working well.

Thanks for the replies. I've learned something today so perhaps I should come on here more often!

We made the decision early on that 2021 would be a caravanning in the UK year..
So far we've booked 13 sites - 9 CAMC, 1 CCC, 3 Private/Commercial. Only just added them all up.... some of these are only short stays, and apart from 'long holidays' they don't involve weekends. We don't intend on cancelling any of them, except if it's Covid related or emergency. Sadly, I suspect that some of these may well be cancelled for us because of lockdown.
......and they are all serviced pitches, so we won't be carrying a wastemaster or aquaroll..
I think we all need something to look forward to.

Interesting statement, we always have to carry aquaroll as we have external pump, but would always carry wastemaster as on 2 occasions i can remember we have swopped from serviced pitch to Standard simply because the standard was better situated, really dont mind non serviced, we seldom shower in the caravan so water usage is limited.

I wondered if this might raise an eyebrow or two... 🙂🙂 We use this Rufs.... from Colapz. It's just like a small collapsible bucket. (We don't use their hoses though - I use food grade flat hoses - we keep 3 x 5m lengths and use as few as we need) They are also bringing out a 20L collapsible container (I think in Spring 2022- apparently you are going to be able to link several of them together....
Over these last few years we've cut down on the stuff we take with us and much goes in the back of the car. Everything for the 'outside' goes in the car - aquaroll and wastemaster are quite bulky.

I see that the First Minister of Wales, Mark Drakeford, has indicated that talks have started on the possibility of tourism opening up again.
He is a very cautious person and says that the best case scenario would be "Self Contained holiday accommodation" would likely to be first and it might happen in time for Easter. He describes the talks as "Cautious" himself. I can't see it being just Wales going alone.
So at least there is a glimmer of light peeking through.

That would be good, but I'd be more surprised than not if they open sites up as early as that in England, the way they are talking at present. One can only live in hope and see what announcements are made a week tomorrow.
