Hi everyone,a longtime member but relatively new to the forums.

we are just in the process of upgrading our Motorhome from a Elddis Encore 255 to a Autotrail Comanche.the Comanche is 1.3m longer at 8.7m and I have realised that some sites have a 8 m maximum length and some have 8.5 m length.I understand that I won’t fit on a 8m pitch but would I be turned away because we are 20cm to long on a 8.5m pitch.has anyone had experience of this.

sorry for the long post and all answers welcomed.

tony

You'll need to check with each site whether it can accommodate you.

It's not necessarily the pitch length that is the limiting factor but sometimes it's access or manoeuvring space to allow a big MH to turn onto a pitch. They tend to need more turning space than a car and caravan fitted with a mover.

Some sites would be a bit tight and may only have one pitch that 8mtr would fit on ,and i think may need a call to those sites, and if ok for the extra length, book while on the phone

The Site Directory gives the maximum length. I think in the past the advice has been to ring the site if you are close to the maximum pitch length offered. Even with our previous van which was 7.5 metres long, but about 8 with the bikes on we often found it a bit tight especially if you wanted to be able to walk around the motorhome on hardstanding. Not sure what wardens think about overhanging the grass surround as that often gets in the way of their grass cutting.

Take note of this advice...especially on sites with low level lighting near to tarmac...which can be out of mirror site when reverse manoeuvring. Nudging one of these will cost you very dearly...

As a Site Manager. The present booking system, is prepopulated with the maximum length for the site. This cannot be overridden by site staff when trying to create a booking. ..

    Morning

Just to add, there are ways we can, and certainly do accommodate large outfits over the stated length for the site. As already said upthread a call to the site staff normally proves successful.

Given the apparently contradictory post by your colleague, do we presume that it is booked in at the max site length and a local note made to allocate a pitch that can take "over length" vehicles?

    Thanks for all the replies,

we have imputed the the data in a different way.but it will be backed up with a phone call when the sites open.

    Morning

Remember that phone call though dl. Many times we've had to turn away a large outfit because the info supplied by the member is different on their booking.

When we had a longer van we would always phone ahead where we exceeded the site specified size. Struck me that on many sites there were possibly only one or two pitches which could accommodate the longer units. Obviously with allocated pitches that turn up and choose a pitch so valued by many is taken away from us. I just wonder if that maximum specified length was the smallest pitch or the longest one on the site or maybe the majority size. I guess, along with site occupation levels, this would determine the degree of management needed. Best to phone and have that allocated pitch than be turned away I'm sure.
