Yes you can apply now, as I discovered. It asks you to put the PIN number in from your EHIC card that is expiring & today it is reported on on the BBC news website HERE

Didn't know my EHIC had a PIN. Fortunately I renewed mine in October. By the time it expires I'll probably be getting too old for continental jaunts.

Thanks for that link. I think I'll apply now, ours are within 6 months of expiry and I guess there might be quite a delay in issuing the new ones. We don't travel without insurance anyway but this is an extra safety measure. I assume in being "global" rather than "European" that this will be even more valuable should we ever have need of it.

My EHIC card expired in September 2020 and foolishly because of Brexit and thinking it of no use anymore I cut it up and binned it.
Went to apply online last week and realised it was asking for my PIN number, and of course I did not know it.
Called the GHIC helpline number 0300 330 1350 and within minutes was talking to someone (surprisingly). After a few questions she had all my details in front of her, she then told me my new GHIC card would be sent to me and asked if I had a partner that also needed one, again answered a few questions and both will be winging my way soon.
My wife did use her card in 2018 in Vienna, and we also take out full personal insurance on our travels although the card was so much easier in her circumstance.

Just renewed OH online, website a bit of a nightmare, guess it could be very busy but easy enough to do , the PIN number is the number following the UK as printed on the front of the card, mine does not expire until 2025 so will hold off on that, depending on how many hoops we have to jump through to get overthere, i might have lost the will to live and give up.

All kitted out and nowhere to go. Is it five or ten years that they are valid for? Might be out of lockdown by then.

I believe the intention is that as our Government negotiates trade deals they will agree with some countries to allow reciprocal healthcare for travellers. Clearly it won't be possible or even desirable, in every case but it should extend well beyond the EU in time.

Shouldnt worry about EHIC/GHIC too much just now if your thoughts are on the sunny climes of Spain, daughter has told me that local travel restrictions have been extended to the 16th April, not that we are likely to be allowed out of the UK before then anyway

Just an update, our new cards arrived today, so a 6 week time from application. Yes it is for EU and MAY include other countries and they tell you to check the Gov website & they last for 5 years. I have kept my card number and Sharon's is the same now except for an 02 in the sequence, presumably for card 2 in the family. My pin number has remained the same but Sharon's has altered completely. At least they are here and available now, we just need to be able to travel. 2022 I'm guessing in all honesty
