Just a note, that because of social distancing , trains as all public transport are  not  "full" but only to what is allowed today , so tickets that were sold out for each train was just as usual headline grabbing  to make a story, ,so the crowds? that were shown was more likley a build up of those hoping space would be available on later trains ,

And as usual people did not think "it would be so busy" as came from some who added to the "crowds in the summer

Th photos at St Pancras were taken after the tier 4 announcement, some people had pre-booked tickets but many were trying to beat the midnight deadline. Our SW railways have been affected by Covid and many staff have been taken ill, there is always a rush to the West Country at this time of the year but trains can only go as far as Basingstoke just now, not enough drivers and staff available. The mix of people on Saturday night must have been an ideal carrier for the virus. Lets hope that has all calmed down now, a pity it happened.

Not according to these reports, including announcements being made of the PA systems at the stations apparently. frown

That is a point JV, sold out quicker as less available.

It’s human nature I suppose. But the really galling thing is it’s simply a repeat performance of what happened back in March. Too little, far too late. I cannot blame other Governments for taking the decision not to allow flights, freight etc......

With restricted capacity on all trains it would have made the situation look more of a problem as well

We have been an independent island nation since the beginning of 2020.  We can hardly blame Europe for closing the shutters if something we have here may threaten them.  Roll on V Day then V day 2 plus 7.

But then as all "news reports" the truth will out ,when headlines have been digested .and socal distancing PA announcements have been put out for months, as noted on  the Documentries about Paddington station,

As i understand from one of my still working staff member ,there are strict numbers allowed on trains and tickets are only issued up to the social distanced capacity of each service

I would be more inclined to believe the last few lines than the "chatter" on social mediaundecided

I don't think it can be justified by the way it looked, obviously many decided to "escape." But it's done now and hopefully will be calmer. You have to accept that there will be panic reactions amongst some and London is a very crowded city.

From what I’ve read mutations of viruses is how they evolve & survive its natural & they don’t need anything but a host who doesn’t care if they get it or not🤷🏻‍♂️

I doubt that any viruses specifically target hosts that don't care if they get it or not.  Would it, or they, really be that choosy? laughing

I don't think he mentioned the word 'specifically', and it's because you, me and many others care for ourselves and others, is the reason that so far we have not caught it.

Some people just don't get it, do they? My better half was talking on the phone to her friend today about Christmas. Her friend has said that they are carrying on with the plans that they have already made. It's too late to alter anything she said.

So on Wednesday her son in law, (whose work causes him to mix with a lot of people) is driving 190 miles to Northumberland to pick up his mother and drive back down on Christmas eve. She's staying with him and his wife  "for a few days". Also on Wednesday my wife's friend's son is driving 50 miles over from Lincoln and staying with his parents "for a few days". On Christmas day they are all meeting at daughter and son in law's house for lunch and late afternoon buffet. "We're all well so we don't think it will be a problem. None of us have got Covid".

These are supposed to be well educated people who seem to have left all their brain cells somewhere. Words fail me.

It makes you despair, JM20. Why people think they don’t need to follow guidance beggars belief. 😖

"It won't happen to me" - yeah, right!😤

Attitudes and actions change (or should do) when the advice changes Bill - that's the official government advice I'm referring to and not that of a couple of self appointed amateur experts trying to dictate to others what they can and cannot do!  frown

Maybe see you for a jar or two in the Harbour Tavern next year! 👍

Come on you lot, quit the petty bickering. Don't want yet another locked thread. I look forward to reading these threads, especially after the last few days of changes. A challenging time for us.

The way I personally look at it is that:

    a) use the current rules not as a target to be achieved but the max. As they change so the max changes.

    b) Do a personal risk assessment keeping within the rules, personally I haven't changed my lifestyle going into Christmas from what I've been doing since the last lockdown. I just want to stay safe and will keep myself and mine as safe as possible. If others break the rules I won't be near them.

    c) don't judge or finger point at others, just keep yourself safe.

There is a misguided belief that if you simply keep yourself to yourself then it doesn’t matter much what others do, as they inhabit a parallel universe and will be the only one to suffer the consequences. That’s great if it pans out like that, but **** happens. What if you develop a health problem and have to visit a GP, Dentist or hospital? What happens if your car breaks down when you’re out and about on essential journeys? What happens if your heating/plumbing fails and you need urgent repair etc etc.....?

If others break the rules then you just mind find yourself very near to them!

Well I would put my mask on, gel up & stay away from the people who are helping me👍🏻. It’s called thinking on your feet or having a plan B. If it would help me to ensure I don’t get the virus i will try your idea I won’t keep myself to myself(like the scientists say I should btw) I will mix thoroughly, although I can’t actually see how that will keep me safer but you seem convinced🤔🤷🏻‍♂️

I think you're using very weak examples here.

What if you develop a health problem and have to visit a GP, Dentist or hospital?

I would expect those places to have the protection necessary, and really I won't be going near any non medical staff and then the only way I would be 'exposed' to risk would be with GPs, dentists or hospital staff. Are you suggesting those types of people will breaks the rules?

What happens if your car breaks down when you’re out and about on essential journeys?

Again the recovery staff attending will be wearing protective masks, and I certainly won't be near them.

What happens if your heating/plumbing fails and you need urgent repair etc etc.....?

I refer you to my second answer. I'll let them fix the problem then disinfect any places they went.

    Pretty simple really.

Keep yourself safe. Worry only about yourself.

Anyway what is your way round any of your examples?

Minimising risk is all we can hope to achieve. Eradicating it is well nigh impossible.

I am currently working on getting my Mum for her first jab tomorrow. Gloves, mask, face shield. Just hoping our area doesn’t suffer a huge rise in cases, it’s taken months to get Into a slightly better place.

Actually SBs' example of a car breaking down can be used to further explain why one should stick to the rules.

Imagine in a particular area where you live there is an increasing rate of cars breaking down, or catching a computer virus. One might ask what is the probability of my car breaking down? My computer catching the virus?

Other factors come into that calculation rather than just looking at the rate (like you did last week). Do you check your car's, tyres, coolant levels each week? Do you keep to the manufactures service schedules? Do you drive conservatively/carefully or trash the gears and hard acceleration, harsh braking? Do you keep to the speed limits?

Same for a computer, anti virus software?

Stick to the rule/guidelines and your own risk decreases significantly. Yes there will always be others who break them but all you can do is look after yourself, what did they used to say - drive according to the highway code and you'll never have an accident?

Why would one put oneself in those dangerous situations? I wouldn't dream of asking anyone to get near me, nor getting near them. If it's a dangerous situation call the police and get well away from it.

I wouldn't dream of myself pushing a car with others or ever asking others to help me push a car. I would leave it to the recovery staff.

Would you do that? ask others to risk their lives for you and possibly expose themselves to you having the virus?

So I'm puzzled, are you saying you don't drive at the moment?
