Recoomendation is now available and it does not look good for the 14th inspite of a lot of support from the Bristol Community and business. This is their conclusion
"Although there has been a small change in circumstances since the previous refusal (progression for the plans to redevelop Baltic Wharf) this does not override the previous assessment. The proposed development would detract from the openness of the Green Belt and, in the absence of very special circumstances, would constitute inappropriate development. The proposal would also fail to preserve or enhance the Bower Ashton Conservation Area and the setting of the Ashton Court Estate, a registered historic park and garden. Furthermore, the development would be at high risk from flooding. Finally, the proposed use would have a detrimental impact on trees. Therefore the application is recommended for refusal."
Perhaps if it fails, there is an opportunity to establish a motorhome Aire without effecting the existing site, i.e. just use the existing facilities? Surely there can be no objections to that?

So something that would hardly be noticed by those passing and would replace what is effectively a brown field site, would fail to enhance the Bower Ashton Conservation area.🤔
Basically they don't want another campsite.☹️ Seems strange in the current climate, where you would think they would want to encourage as many folk back to Bristol as possible once the pandemic is behind us.

It is difficult to believe especially when you look at the street views on google. The site looks a right eye sore as it is now.

The area that was the Training school ,is it really in an area that the "inspector?" has mention ?,it may be in the "boundary" but certainly not what most people of Bristol would agree
It does make one wonder what agenda is being followed by some ,
When the council first "advised" they needed Baltic Wharf site ground for a much needed Prmary school? (to get public support that was not forth coming) i understand that has now changed and the ground is for more housing similar to the other luxury flats in the area as was probably the plan in the first place (Money)
Thinking about the grounds the clubs second now amended application is it seems likely to be again refused (unless the commitee are more aware of the inpact on the city)do the club now own or have a lease the ground? and if so who was it bought /leased from? as it will be difficult to get rid of

Sadly Bristol has an ongoing problem with people using motorhomes and caravan as living and storage accommodation on the streets. So there's probably quite an anti van sentiment amongst the councillors.
The police horse centre is now derelict and doesn't enhance the Ashton Court area either! I'm surprised a site couldn't have been developed on the estate itself.

If they can't get permission to improve the current eyesore, I would doubt there is any chance of getting approval for anything on the estate. Depending where it was on the estate, there also might be an issue with transport links. The currently proposed site does have a good bus service, plus is within reasonable walking distance of the centre as well as Ashton Court.

I tend to agree with the view that Bristol doesn't really want a campsite within its boundaries otherwise there would have been more enthusiasm for the scheme. Some of the spurious objections put forward by Council officials seem to support that view. One of the objections was that the site would be an eyesore as seen from the Clifton area and the suspension bridge. As I pointed out in my submission to the planning committee that would only be true if you were looking at the site through binoculars!!! Fingers crossed that I am wrong.

Steve. The proposed site is only just over the road from a footpath into the etstate, there are quite a few footpath exits to transport links if a space could be found...they find enough spaces for festivals etc when needed.
I wonder if the long time coming Portishead train link would have an impact, maybe a station for Ashton Court in that area?
Oh well, we'll be hearing soon!

If my memory serves me right? that was envisaged as a possible area for a site some year ago ,towards the other entrance to the park away from the college/ police training school end.but any plans are all subject to who has the last say and if they live in that area

The reasons given cited by PD do suggest to me that they are looking for excuses to refuse. The site is at the same level above MHWS as the extensive car storage area at Portishead. If flooding was really an issue there would be a far bigger financial impact there than a few caravans, which are probably already damp anyway. Impact on trees? Come on now! They are clutching at straws. They just don't want a site under any circumstances.

>Article on Bristol Live< about tonights council meeting. I thought it a good summing up of the status.

Thanks Peedee, some of the comments are silly, especially about it being a green field area...check out the major roadwork developments nearby which have carved up the area! I don't think it could be seen from the Suspension Bridge (it's down in a dip) and the extra lights won't match the way the bridge is lit up every night! Ashton Court Park is also hidden behind a school, houses and modern uni buildings, the site hardly impinges on that either. A pity, the revenue from the site would boost local funds in many different ways.

The Clubs application was approved on condition a couple of trees were not removed and the site lighting is subdued or shown to be subdued when viewed from Clifton etc. However because it is in the green belt and goes against the recommendations of the Environment Agency it must be referred to the Secretary of State for final approval.

The proceedings of the meeting are still on U-Tube. Having never been to a council meeting I found it more entertaining than what was on TV! The first 1-1/2hrs was taken up by another submission and the Club's followed on from that after a short break. The final discussion and verdict starts 2 hours into the recording if you want to watch the conclusion of the Club's submission which was passed 8 for with one abstention.

PS interestingly one council member was a member of the Club and another was a camper.

One councilor seemed to be playing with his phone throughout the meeting. I concluded he had already firmly made up his mind on how to vote on both submissions before the meeting and wasn't interested in anything said about either during the meeting.

P.S. the camper is a member of the C&CC so there was representation from both Clubs on the committee.

Well that's the main hurdle gotten over 👍 Just the Secretary of State to come onside regarding the Green belt (questionable), and the Flood risk which is the same category 3 as Baltic Wharf is where housing will develop by a developer owned by the Council itself . So I'm thinking that won't be a problem, and that leaves two trees to sort out.
Good news and I actually watched it for over an hour
The original poster in their last paragraph said "We will keep you posted on developments", it seems news comes faster from its members rather than via the Club itself.

We have just got back from Cromer today but I tried to watch the proceedings on my small laptop but unfortunately the sound was not so good but it was interesting to watch. I thought the Chair kept a fairly tight rein on things.
So a good result and interesting because the proposal doesn't seem to have changed massively from the first submission. I suspect the Secretary of State would have been more influenced against the proposal if there was a ground swell of local discontent about the plan but given that Councillors voted in favour by such a large margin hopefully it won't be a problem. I must ask my eldest son what actually happens when a submission goes to the Secretary of State, I wonder if it is all just written evidence?
