That's quite a turn around. They must have greatly upset you.
Pah, they're all the same! Don't give your loyalty when none is returned.

Whilst I suppose I have more of an allegiance to the CMC as I have been a member much longer. They were there when I first started caravanning and there when I first went abroad. The booking system is simple. My membership of the C&CC is much shorter and I joined because it gave me greater choice of sites and I like the fact that I can book a hardstanding. However that allegiance, to either club, is only there whilst they are useful to me. I think some seem to get too wound up on whether they are Clubs or businesses ( not aimed at the OP) that of course is different to how members are treated as it shouldn't make any difference if the philosophy in place is the correct one? I am sure over the COVID period there will be a shake out of members of both clubs but equally there will be a rise in new members. The way of the world I suppose?

I did once join the CCC and did go to a few of their sites. I found them to be below the CAMC 'standard' (just my personal view) and while they made have made vast improvements nothing I've seen or heard would tempt me back, but obviously others are keen to use their sites so just my view.
However while some might think I'm super loyal to this club, but as I've said before a few times, as in most other things I buy I'm only loyal as long as I get what I want in terms of quality, reliability, value...
Once I find they don't then I look elsewhere and have done.
As others have said would be interesting to see what the final straw was.

As far as I see it WTG those of us enjoying club site breaks are taking a calculated risk during the present Covid times. The clubs are doing what they can to remain open. We either stay or go but it's a bit unfair to expect more from the situation.

Personally I don't see their reasons as being Selfish, self centred concern. They are the conditions you booked under, you gave your reasons for leaving, and for you the correct ones, and they gave their reasons behind their decision. Both arguments appear reasonable.
What outcome would you have wanted? No refund but an acknowledgment of your reasons for leaving?
Personally if I made what I considered the right choice for me, I wouldn't worry at all if anyone accepted it or not.

Hindsight, eh?
I'm not sure what you expected, WTG.

I agree with what you have posted. and in these uncertain times I would expect after the First Ministers instructions that the ccc would be a bit more understanding
Although we have not been expecting to do much at these times for just the in case of the situation that has occurred in. Wales and if reports from those that know?are to be believed then the rest of this year for us is looking as if we can forget any more site visits

well you didn't give any indication in your OP and subsequent explanation, unless I've missed it, that there was an outright denial about the words of the FM.
Personally I think they did give you a rational discussion (The site is Covid compliant; this is a safe area...), reasonable from their point of view and that it was your choice to leave.
But again you made your choice based on your conscience and the correct one for you, there is no need to have their approval for it, or anyone's.
The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience

I suppose that with the current situation carrying on for the foreseeable future the CAMC's easier booking, no deposit, booking, cancellation, and early leaving procedures make it a safer choice?

It was something we got our heads round quite early on to be honest. We had to decide which organisations we would keep paying, and which we would take a break from. In some respects our decision making came about by how well we thought each organisation was doing in terms of providing information. Cadw and the NT were superb. Automatic extension of membership was also a bonus. Historic Houses was ditched as it isn’t a charity, merely an opportunity to peek inside the homes of the (still) very rich. RSPB we have always supported, that stayed, as did not expecting an extension on a yearly pass to Yorkshire Wildlife Park. We weren’t currently members of C&CC, so no angst there. Conveniently, our CAMC renewal came up early in lockdown. So we took a break, rejoined after 27 years continuous membership in September. Purely for access to the CLs, we knew we were unlikely to go back to a Club Site this year, and that remains the case to date.
The situation around booking and paying up front or being penalised with a deposit retention remains high at the moment, and likely to be so for quite a while. Hence we aren’t booking any sites up front, just phoning to see who is open, and taking pot luck. We could even pay on a nightly basis, to avoid any fee retention.
The one exception is our holiday cottage starting next week. Everything paid for, but it will take a “you cannot travel” edict to prevent us going, and after careful research, should such a policy be implemented our money will either be moved to another date, or fully refunded. At the moment, everything is on, for the whole duration, as we won’t be doing anything different to home while away. The highest risk factor is travelling there, travelling back, but two vehicles are going so we won’t be stuck. Change of scenery, no meals out, only outdoor activities allowed, no shopping. Small village, big cottage, huge garden, beach 400 metres away. Most food taken with us. We shall have a ball doing crafts, cycling, experimental cooking, walking, beachcombing and just being together.
I do respect the decisions of others that might not be the same as ours though, in terms of actually going away, or choosing to return earlier than expected.

Likewise we have a holiday cottage in the Lakes coming up, actually it was supposed to happen over Easter and we had the option to a refund or move the date which we did. And like you unless there is a no travel instruction we will certainly take it up.
If we can't go we do have the option to a full refund but we'll probably move it into next year and have a paid for holiday 'in the bank'.

We were in a similar situation back in March. We arrived at Hawes for a week and two days later Boris said there should be no unnecessary travel. However, as we were there and only walking from the site we decided that our necessary journey home might as well be at the end of our stay rather than the beginning. I think if we had still had a caravan, we just wouldn't have used the car until the tow home. In the end we left a day early, but that was because the site filled up for the weekend and we didn't feel that safe. They are much better now with all the Covid precautions.

It’s a bit of a special break ours. Try to get Mum away a couple of times a year while she is still physically fit enough. First chance we have had, and it will tide us through what is likely to be a very long Winter. We have worked hard at keeping our little bubble as risk free as possible to achieve a break together. We hope to keep using MH for us two to go away in as long as possible, and fingers crossed, maybe another just us two cottage in December.
I think depending on where we choose to go from now on, it will pay to check out the differences that might be in place across different countries of UK. Subtle, but there.

I do feel some empathy for WTG. The least the C&CC could have done would be to offer a voucher or hold his fee for another date, maybe just until the end of the season.
I have had similar conversations with both cottage hiring companies, commercial sites and Cls and all of them have offered without being asked to hold deposits etc. over for another time.
Not everything is black and white and, especially at this moment in time, a little give and take on behalf of the leisure industry is needed.

I’m sympathetic, however like a few others who have posted have no illusions that both Clubs are driven principally by generating income.
I agree that having shown a commitment to the Club (in WTG’s example the C&CC) a degree of reciprocal commitment in the form of carrying over the fees to another visit would have been a good outcome in this instance. 🤔

David's gym example is not unlike C&CC’s membership extension. I had an email recently reminding me that my renewal would be due in February 2021 rather than this November.
