Gosh yes, it was a peculiar smell. Tadcaster was the same. Last time we were in Carlisle it was coconut biscuit day!😁

...because they're NOT operating a campsite, it would be a parking area..
parking areas at pub stopovers or other Britstop sites arent subject to 6m spacing, are they?
as with many things 'aire' you (one) can take the man out of the caravan but cant take the caravan out of the man

Just reading odd pages here and there and noticed this on page 47 (I think.)
“There used to be a very useful nighthalt accessd off the M6 services at Tebay (if I remember right) it was just a basic site and certainly nowhere to spend a holiday but when we were heading for Scotland after work it was great to know there was no restriction on arrival time or uniquely for the UK any need to book or ring ahead. I believe an office block has now been built on the site”.
Guess that changing was to ensure a more profitable use of the land.
I feel UK Aires of the type the OP posts about would already be in existence if they were a viable business proposition.

Obviously you have selective reading skills, the idea is you are parking overnight and not camping which as BB Says is getting out your deckchair and BBQ, doing your washing etc. Just to park overnight is not camping its parking same as anyone else in whatever vehicle they have so please if you cannot get it into your mind please stop posting stupid responses to a question that has been answered many times over...

I had a motorcycle at age 16 in 1968 and access a car at age 17 having passed my test a month after my birthday. I got my own car 6 months later when I went to collect stuff from school after my A levels. I saw a gap in traffic on the busy and wide road outside school. Some fella was late for a meeting and speeding through the middle of the two lanes of traffic. I didn't spot him. Hit the car and pushed the wing into the wheel.
When I got home my father was in bed as he was working nights and on a mini shift on Friday which was something like 4pm till 10pm. I woke him with a brew 15 minutes earlier an said I had had a bump. When he came out side he only said one word, went inside, threw me the car keys and said 'you've got a car son'. Being on management he phoned work to send a driver to pick him up and bring him home l3 days later he had bought a 3 year old car from the firms ex-lease compound and a new wing with his management staff discount and borrowed an arc welder for me and I had my own car.

I think you are talking about camp sites again and not parking areas and I do not think these are laws just a recommendation but as I said above happy to be corrected on that bit.
I am sure you are happy to sit on a car park sorry C&MC site 6m from your nearest neighbour and never on an aire type facility so why are you so concerned, based on most of your posts I don't think it is to do with anyone's welfare just trolling for a reaction I guess but whatever pleases you in your blinkered dotage.

I wonder why quite a lot of our European friends call these vehicles Camping Cars or Campers? I Dont think the argument about what they are called is actually relevant at all.
I can see no reason why we shouldn't have Airs in the UK. The UK is no different to other European countries. Local Authorites should consider applications from interested parties via the usual planning channel. The LA will decide what regs apply or not. Site locations are unlikely to be on prime real estate locations with high land values. Some may be LA's using sites for several purposes and gaining on utilisation/revenue. Scools/Collages could use some of the large car parks. There are many locations that would be able to serve this purpose without much additional capital cost. Basic facilities of water grey dump black dump dont have to cost much if the people doing it have a brain their their head and chose its location sensibly. We are talking about places to stay over whilst travelling, not holiday sites.

I think LAs have more pressing priorities to be honest.
PD and others have pointed out the plethora of suitable alternatives which already exist out there.
BB has come up with a reasonable compromise, especially where those alternatives might not exist, of allocating say half a dozen overnight parking spaces in larger car parks or P&R areas.
I think schools, social care, road safety to name but three are preferable uses for our council tax.
Edit - just reread your post and I realise you weren't suggesting financial input from LA's. Sorry for that - don't think it negates my other two points though.

dont think this info is correct still on the web as a camp site, stayed there many times when we lived in Scotland and used to motor down south for family visits, showing as £23 per night with £3 voucher to use in country shop, always been the same, you used to be able to pitch without unhitching, was fine for 1 nighter just dont go there when Appleby horse fair was taking place

There are a lot of suitable park up spaces that could be utilised almost immediately with some open minded thinking, places that have daytime coach spaces, or hgv spaces, not used at night time. It’s providing, maintaining and preventing vandalism to the extras, tap, waste points that require the outlay. And they would get vandalised, you only have to look at the way public toilets are closing to see this. We could be tempted to stay on such in nice little towns, such as Skipton or Barnard Castle🤓 for example for a night after looking around town. Both places have huge car parks with next to nothing in at nighttime.
