Not too far from Santander, we’ve stayed here and like it, restaurant on site. Lovely extensive sandy beach within walking distance and another restaurant overlooking the sea.

stayed for a couple of weeks here last year, they also have indoor and new outdoor swimming pools, some pitches great some not so great, watch out for sleeping policemen, we have quite a large overhang at rear and it caught as we passed over, nothing major, 45 minutes from port, i seem to recall this is on the clubs recommended sites but i also seem to recall there were 2 sites with similar sounding name, one not quite so good.

Camping Virgen del Mar for one night makes sense if your ferry arrives on an evening - the site is close.
But after that if you want to get away from the coast and go inland (fewer people = fewer viruses ) then Camping El Molino de Cabuerniga is an hour's drive away and a pleasant retreat in the countryside.

AD. If you are looking for the nearest 'convenient' site to the port then look at Cabo Major just by the lighthouse in the outskirts of Santander 10 - 20 mins from the port. If the ferry is delayed for any reason they remain open; a couple of years ago our ferry was 2 hrs late but the site knew about it and reception was open. OK for a night but in Aug may be full so would be worth checking.

Don't upset the owner - the first time we have ever been thrown off a site!
Pitches very very tight with trees on every corner, almost impossible to pitch even with the mover. Access to the caravan area was ludicrous with 90 degree bend with inches to spare. Ground was very very wet. - Looks a nice area though!

We have used Cabo Mayor several times over the last few years. Its a bit pricey in July - August for what it is but it isn't in ACSI because there is no need, no competition. There are two or three reasonable cafes- restaurants just outside the site. The one up by the lighthouse has a very Spanish feel to it and the tapas isn't bad.

David we stayed on Cabo Mayor the time we came into Santander, ferry was late so didn't arrive at site until back of 8pm as said site was waiting for folk to arrive. It had been very wet before our arrival but the grass was good that was mid April.
Sorry to hear your Bilbao has been cancelled though. Have you thought about flipping your booking ie going out Portsmouth - Caen coming home Bilbao. That way you would be working your way south down France as the weather gets cooler, rather than working north as it cools down, that's what we do at the back end of the year. Just a thought.

Its a nice boat hope you manage to get away.
We are watching to see if France goes on the naughty step, not bothered about the quarantine on return but if we have no insurance for us the car and caravan or breakdown that could be a deal breaker.

Yup we are still watching France but have been talking to the manager at CAMPING LARROULETA, where we intend to stay for a little while and he said all was very quiet his end and infection rates low in the area. This is quite a good spot for nipping into Spain for the day, but with weather like we are having just now no great hardship if we have to stay home, but after watching news reports certainly wont be hopping into Dorset/Devon/Cornwall, hope you get your trip.
