Pitch size
Hi,
I probably should know the answer to this, but what is the maximum pitch width on a club site?
We have just brought an awning and I've got a feeling when its up connected to the motorhome its going to be too wide. motorhome is approx 2.5 and awning 4 mtr
Any help appreciated
Thank you in advance

Pitch sizes do vary so it’s not easy to answer. Bear in mind too that you need the width to be from the pitch marker to one edge as you can’t fill the entire pitch with van and awning.
It maybe best to contact the club to ask, or even each site before you visit.

I would think most awning pitches are between 6 and 7 metres wide. Room for a car, caravan and standard size awning. Although some are narrower and the car goes in front. However as TW says you can't just fill the pitch, the MH has to be parked correctly to the peg. I would think on most pitches we have been on it would be very tight, without straying onto the grass divide.
Last year a MH arrived on a site we were on and erected a large drive away awning, probably about the 4 metres you mentioned. It strayed well onto the grass divide. Almost certainly violating the spacing regs. The next day when I passed on the way to the facilities it had been removed.

At a guess, I suspect about 3m to pitch marker and 6.5 to other edge. but there will be some narrower and some wider as it is not standard.
Somebody with a 4m awning may have a better answer. I do think it will be tight on some sites though, and not just club sites.

Hi Caroline.
You might have a problem with some site pitches as they're not all a uniform size. It's the gap between units that's the important issue.
I'm sure that you know that whatever you place on your pitch it must not go on the grass strip which divides pitches.
Staff at any sites would be able to advise you if they have pitches wide enough for your requirements.

Are you sure the awning you have just purchased is 4mtrs, as awning manufacturers usually know the limits of pitch sizes and i have never heard of or seen an awning that depth. Pitch widths are generally 6mtrs

They are wider than that pathfinder as my X-Trail is just over 1.8m wide and I park such that I can open drivers door flly and clear the van. So that is about 2.8m. then caravan is 2.3m and so 5.1m plus space for a standard 2.5m awning at least. I would suspect that most are at least 8m wide.

Some might be, but when we had a caravan, on many the car only just cleared the aqua roll and I was stepping out of my door onto the grass divide. On the door side we could extend our pull out awning but storm pegs were generally in the grass. Some of the new service pitches are very generous though.

Good Evening
On club sites we use pitch markers to guide where you park your main sleeping accommodation (caravan or motorhome etc). In the main those pitch markers are set 12 meters apart for pitches with awnings. Bear in mind there must be a 3 meter fire break between the edge of your awning to your neighbours car (If he's in a caravan outfit) So, when you've parked up, you have six meters to play with from the pitch marker to include your van and awning. Always good practise to speak to site staff either before arrival or before pitching so we may be able to point you in the direction of a suitable spot. We do try and help with outsized awnings where possible but the fire separation between outfits is paramount. Give us a shout, we try and make everyone's stay safe and enjoyable

Thanks JK although I never encountered a hardstand that narrow. I have mainly used a 1.8m porch on (for the last 8 of the last years or so) a 2.3m caravan. Car has been just over 2 m and have always parked to allow door to open wide and so pitch about 7m wide. As I sometimes site the caravan 200mm of the peg to allow full door opening if needed I have then checked separation, either as an ex highway engineer capable of fairly accurate pacing out or with the warden staff if around. (out of interest I paced out 200m and checked with a wheel when working. I wasn't correct but had lost about 600mm in 200m.) I don't use an awning these days.

Thank you for the replies, we will just have to ask each site when we arrive.
One thing I don't understand is why caravans can take up the whole pitch, with car, caravan and awning
Thanks

It's all about fire spacing.
The main unit MH or caravan must be positioned back off side or front nearside to the peg. The main unit must be 6 metres from another unit. Car and awning can be positioned either side and must be 3 metres from the next car or awning.
If you positioned your MH to one side of the pitch in order to fit your awning within the boundary of the hardstanding, it would In most cases place it within 6 metres of the MH or caravan alongside.

Caroline - caravans using a standard pitch with awning will take up all of the pitch. If they are erecting an awning, the car must be parked either on the offside of the van or across the front on some sites (on longer/narrower pitches. No part of the grass dividing strip can be used as part of the pitch. Obviously they have three parts to their 'unit', car, caravan and awning.
If a motorhome is using a standard pitch with awning, they too must pitch to the peg. Their awning would take up the pitch space to the nearside of the motorhome. Many motorhomes also tow a small car which would then need to be parked in the same manner as a caravanner's tow car. This arrangement would mean occupying most of the pitch space.

On some sites it may be possible to use a pitch at the end of a row, so that the warden might agree that either the MH can be moved over a little to leave space for the awning, or the awning could extend a little further than usual, without fire spacing rules being broken.
