Similar to us moulesy, after 10 years the vans have to be sold back to the site if you are selling it. We bought ours hoping for long term. We reckoned on losing almost all of what we had initially paid so we counted that in with our yearly spend. Therefore we chose a well looked after but older van at 17 thousand. But then cars, touring vans and MHs also depreciate.

Yes, I know we're slightly off topic here, but just to be clear for anyone, and there clearly are some, interested - we paid less for our static than a fair few on here have said they pay for a new van and tow car. The ground rent per annum works out, based on 100 nights per year, at within a fiver of touring site fees and we don't have to book in advance or tow and everything is set up on arrival apart from about 30 seconds to turn the water on.
We loved our years of camping and caravanning but this suits us better now.

I don’t think we are off topic. I mentioned that the virus was making us think about holiday alternatives, mentioned a few thoughts for alternatives, and lots of folks have posted great information and thoughts of their own. It is c19 related, but a respite from death and gloom and all the other threads about will or won’t the Club Site loos be open🤷♀️

Whilst the outbreaks mentioned are serious I don't understand how a localised increase in infections would send the whole country rocketing in R number. I suspect there is more to it?

That sounds a bit like the outbreak at Weston-super-Mare hospital a couple of weeks back which sent the R number for the South West up to the highest in the country. Whereas, this week, at 0.6 to 0.9 it's reckoned to be the lowest in the country.
Whilst the numbers clearly have some significance (considerable according to the government) they are pointless if folk don't continue to act with common sense and caution.

I agree David. Germany has a bigger population that ourselves so a few hundred workers isn't going to produce that sort of increase. It might do to local figures but not nationally. As you said, something else going on.
The rapid increase in the Angelsey food processing plant numbers of those now diagnosed, over 150, shows how quickly things can get out of hand.

If that's the case in Spain I wonder why they are allowing even more foreign tourists in as from tomorrow.
From the BBC News today - "Spain has lifted its state of emergency, reopening its borders to visitors from most of Europe and allowing British tourists in without having to quarantine."

With reference to the German R number increase I found this:-
"The Robert Koch Institute for Public Health, RKI, said outbreaks had been reported in a variety of locations including hospitals and nursing homes.
COVID-19 was also discovered in centres for asylum seekers and refugees, among those harvesting crops and at religious and family gatherings."

First flights to Spain took off today. Who was onboard, and their insurance status is however, unconfirmed. I think Spain might just be regretting their decision shortly, much like New Zealand.

When out with Rosa earlier ,she was having a romp with one of the local dogs ,whos owner is a sister at our local hospital ,and she said that the stats for covid deaths are not correct in that she knows of several "covid deaths" that were not down to that as the real course of death

This is a quote from the Kings Fund on the methodology of how decisions are made as to what is put on the deaths certificate:-
"Among the personal details of the deceased person recorded on the death certificate by the registering doctor is the cause/causes of death. Every death will have an ‘underlying’ cause recorded, along with any other causes that may have contributed to the death (‘contributory’ causes) – taken together, these are called ‘mentions’ (deaths with a cause appearing anywhere on the death certificate).
For many conditions, eg, lung cancer and stroke, the ONS uses the underlying cause to count deaths. However, like influenza, Covid-19 can cause death directly or precipitate death from other causes, hence ONS uses ‘mentions’ to get a more complete count Covid-19 deaths."

If covid shortened their lives then covid was the cause of death. Either way it is a killer or it can make us extremely ill. Not something I am prepared to take any chances with. So we will continue to take every precaution. Doesn't matter what the government allows we will decide for ourselves what we will do and we will be sticking to 2 metres, so no pubs, restaurants, takeaways or busy places for us. Everyone must take their own precautions, depending on their health, age etc.

It would be interesting to know how other countries count their deaths from Covid. When the public make judgements on how well a country is dealing with the pandemic, they often quote the death rate for Covid compared to population. This is only valid if each country uses the same criteria for recording the cause of death. I believe a better way for judging how competent a country is at dealing with the epidemic, will be to compare excess deaths above the average for each country for the year.

Exactly, I know deaths are distressing for the families concerned but if we are to keep on top of this virus we need to identify new cases as quickly as possible.
One of the talked about methods for allowing pubs to open would be for the pub to keep a register of all people that had been served in the pub, so that in the event of somebody being diagnosed as positive they could track back and identify the relevant people, great, but of little use if this is 4 or 5 days down the line, and the people that have been in the pub have wandered far and wide.
On the question of number of deaths, anyone who watched the news clips yesterday of what is happening in India, will have little doubt that the figures are being fudged.

I'm really puzzled by that comment David. Since the two of us (Debs and ourselves) who have invested in statics have both said we've had no regrets whatever which of your "reservations" have been "confirmed"?
Accepted that it's a personal choice and it's not for you obviously where have there been any negative comments about personal ownership (as opposed to simply renting one for a couple of weeks)?

Healthy, untested people are walking around with it and sadly spreading it to those who are more vulnerable.
I hope testing worldwide becomes a fast and easy routine but it isn't at present so it's not so much fudged figures but a total lack of real time information.
