Trip to the South of France
We are booked to sail out to Calais on the 18th July to spend three weeks in the south of France, I wonder if we will get there this year. The sailings and all three sites are paid for so i'm not sure how easy things may be to get anything back from them if it doesn't go ahead

Insurance? Payout might depend when you booked, pre or post lockdown date.

Hi takethedogalong
I don't have insurance, we booked it in November the ferry is with P&O Flexi so i can cancel with a full refund but two of the sites are through the club and are just one night stops the other one is a French independent site which is the final stay at Marseillan Plage nearly three weeks stay.

Well, if you worried at all, I would phone the Sites, see what they say/advise, then phone Club for advice. Sincerely hope you get there, but think it will be touch and go. France has rescheduled it’s largest sporting event to October now, rather than July, so I would start thinking about finding out what situation is going to be if you can. Good luck👍

Thank you
The French site emailed and they have cancelled all bookings until May and they asked people not to contact them if you have a booking which isn't yet affected due to them being busy and understaffed which is fair enough. I'm sure if they cancel i will get refunded, My main concern is if they are open and I have to cancel due to ferry or government advice in the UK.

Have a look in the overseas holiday section at the top of this page, click on the updates for foreign travel. CAMC states that some places are unavailable for phone contact at the moment and using emails is making things longer to sort out etc. I would guess you need to take some sort of action to enquire about your holiday.
edit you responded as I was posting so it looks like you are making a bit of progress.

Rich, it's a puzzle, isn't it. But take things in order.
The British government will one day say whether their present "not recommended" travel advice is lifted or not.
The French site at Marseillan Plage will eventually reply to an e mail from you to say whether they will be open for your three week booking - and if they are still closed they will say whether they will give you a credit note for 2021 or a cash refund.
Once you know that the Club will unscramble the overnight bookings you made with them, and then finally you can talk to P&O about the ferry.
Good luck with it and please let us know how it goes.

Tour de France revised date showing on their website as 29/8 to 20/9/20. But Devi Sridhar, 35, professor of global public health at Edinburgh University has condemned the Tour, saying in effect that it is an open invitation for Coronavirus to start again, but this time right across France, because of the huge distance of each stage, and the distances between the regions on the Tour. Social distancing problems, multinationality of riders, crew and fans, danger of being gobbed on by riders or sprayed by discarded drinks bottles from the peloton etc are just some of the challenges that could be avoided by cancelling this year's Tour.
I love the Tour and love France, but this year is not one for us to visit. Our French hovel is in desperate need of some running repairs and maintenance, but it will still need them the following year. If I visit too soon, the maintenance could be someone else's problem.

I'm not being a pessimist, but I severly doubt that the site will be able to honour bookings from the 18th of May, as France's current lockdown lasts until the 11th.
I personally can't see any campsites opening anytime soon, as social distancing will become the norm for a long time, and that would be a big problem, especially in and around toiletblocks. What about sites with pools? I suppose they can keep those closed. But there will also be the matter of cross-country travel, will there have to be some sort of checks?
We normally go to France twice a year, May/June and Sept/Oct, but have resigned ourselves to the fact that the earliest we'll be able to go will be 2021. But I feel sorry for those who have got holidays booked for this summer and possibly won't be able to go.
We live in such uncertain times, let's hope we get through all this safely, holidays are not a priority. IMHO of course.

Its another 5 or 6 weeks so a lot will change by then including a U turn for the 14 day quarantine rule, hopefully tourism will open beginning of July (in fact latest statement form the club confirms that) and travel to EU allowed again. As for insurance I guess itts going to be a chance to take this year .

I do think a lot will change between now and the middle of July. I am not sure what forms i will need to fill in but i am happy to do that if needed. I would still be prepared to go even if the travel insurance didn't cover us to be honest. Covid 19 wont be covered in any case and we are young fit and healthy, if the worse did happen we will pay for health care but if it wasn't a life or death emergency i would get us home anyway

If you need health care in the EU the E111 is still valid.

I would think you would need to be confident that both are able / confident to tow. Although any covid hospitalisation will be covered on the EHIC, there won't be any repatriation or other help forthcoming, if it's excluded from your travel insurance. I know my OH wouldn't want to drive the MH back and never towed the caravan.

Hi rich, You may be right that not much will change, but equally it might, and I hope that you do get your holiday.
If you are referring to Covid 19 only then, as you say, almost all insurers will not give you cover but, and its a big but, I think that to say "we are young, fit and healthy" and "I would get us home anyway" is , without the benefit of travel insurance, quite a bold statement.

Hi David, just posted a reply to rich and wonder if you mean you would travel without insurance or am I misunderstanding?

Hi David, After my last post I tried to find the info re cover fot travel and have spoken to UK Insurance who provide the Nationwide Flex Plus policies.
Interesting call, with Gary, who said that yes I was still covered, then I changed tack and he said "so far as I am aware".
I said that I would not set sail on such a flimsy guarantee so he asked the question of his manager-all done by email as staff are working from home-and the answer came back that you would be covered BUT only if your trip was classed as 'essential'.
That is what I presumed, and was curious as some posts seem to suggest travel without insurance, so for us its still fingers crossed for a Cornwall Rally in September and possible foreign trip once the FCO advice changes.
For us, with only myself as a driver, the issues that could require a claim are perhaps greater than for many others.

For us it does not matter what cover you have, breakdown, or EHIC, if you are both laid up in your caravan feeling very unwell and foreign authorities reluctant to provide help, and if you should have covid-19 how are you going to manage self isolation in a LV if you are both unwell, this could be a very bad situation.
We have a trip planned for early September will only go if all is safe and certainly not if the FCO is still saying only essential travel, that would be reckless in my opinion

"We have a trip planned for early September will only go if all is safe"
Which year is that? I think there may be a great variety of opinions on what constitutes "all is safe" and for some maybe September will be too early.
Of course it matters what cover you have-all the reasons for insurance pre the virus are still there-but if the FCO advice remains as now you have no cover.

trip for 2020, but only provisional as have flexi tickets on ferry so stuck some dates in for September but will move to next year if things do not pan out.
The latest research shows that from 24,000 patients infected 34 pct of cases came from Spain and 29 pct from France, and Spain are now seeing an increase in new infections, so not holding out much hope.

Hi David I think we are both old enough to realise that we have to think for ourselves as we progress through this and that relying on 'official' guidance may not always be the best thing!
But, to be clear, I was talking about all things insurance related except Covid 19 and, in particular, having an accident or breakdown that means I need to claim so until the FCO advice changes my insurer has confirmed I have no cover abroad except for essential travel.
Still, look at all that extra time we get for planning!
